Is there a good preservation of From Star Wars to Jedi, The Making of a Saga?

I can’t seem to find the search button for the forums.

I don't think anyone has undertaken a preservation project. The only LD release was in Japan, and has burned in subtitles of course.

I've been trying to find a 16mm print for years now. The prints of the the SW and ESB docs Puggo is working on were public library discards, so there's always a chance it and Classic Creatures will pop up.

I could do a VHS transfer of my tape of it! It wouldn't be very good though...

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

I have the rowman bonus disc for Jedi that I got in 2005. It's on that, from what I understand transferred from a S-vhs vcr to a dvd recorder, along with the rest of the features.

Classic Creatures is on the blu ray set.

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

Assuming that burned-in subtitles are a no-no, then I think the best we can do at the moment is a nice preservation of the NTSC VHS tape. I can send you a sealed copy if you think it'll help, poita. I currently have no gear that can chew through Macrovision.

Unfortunately, the PAL VHS tape is a just another crummy NTSC->PAL conversion. :-/

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Classic Creatures is another head scratcher. It's another old analog video transfer, but it's different from the VHS and LD master. I previously thought it was edited on video as the closing credits were video generated, but the version used for the Blu Ray had filmed credits. Why there are two different versions is a mystery.

Wish I had known this several years ago when a 16mm print was on Ebay. I mistakenly thought it had to be a video to film transfer that would probably not be worth the trouble.

Isn't there a technique to blur out subtitles? I recall one early version of Backstroke of the West removing the burned in subs this way. I wonder if it's possible to blend in the "clean" part of the VHS image over the LD subs.

Inserting pan and scan footage from OT LD's might also work for some portions.

I've considered buying one of these units for a while, but don't have enough macrovision tapes to justify the expense.

Nice thread! These links may be of some interest:

Anyone know which (of 5!) are best video and/or audio quality?

From Star Wars to Jedi - YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzmHgxA0jOA
It's up to 720p (should look good down-rez'ed to 480p). No burned-in subtitles, so it's not the JP laserdisc.

From Star Wars to Jedi the Making of a Saga DVD - Times Forgotten DVD

Looks like someone made a laserdisc transfer -- "NTSC Region 1 DVD ... HAS NON REMOVEABLE JAPANESE SUBTITLES".

I think the youtube one is a a fake uprez. It's got the CBS/Fox logo and the video trailers present on my VHS copy. (Mine is the white logo box in the photo.) Even if they somehow got their hands on a video master, it's still standard def.

JEDIT:Even at 480p, it's blocky.

The other three docs may have been remastered for the 1995 Japanese LD releases, but SWTJ only had one LD release in the 80's. No idea if the later VHS releases were remastered.

It was released again in Japan in 1995 with digital audio as well.  It was in the Japanese THX Collector's Edition Trilogy Box (same as Faces).  The audio from this disc is included my LD Audio Archive.

Interesting the LDDB didn't have a separate listing for that one. My bad!

Other than that one time a beautiful LPP print was on Ebay in 16mm i cannot think of any other time a print has been available.

Some one bought it and took the print with them.

I think i even remember asking the chap who won it if he would consider selling it for just a little more than he paid.

No dice its for a private collection and then he disappears into the night, lol.

Then again back  8 or 9 years ago no one would have had the ability to afford to scan a 16mm print in HD.  And outdo the Japanese laserdisc.

If one can best the editdroid version have a go. I am happy with what i have but a  nice 1080P version by Lucasfilm would have been nice.

The other 3 making of documentaries come clearly from the last digital tape masters used in japan and yet there are no burnt in subtitles.

So they must have had fswtj they just did not include it or the making of fluff piece that was on the 2004 bonus disc either.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Okay, so I captured the Japanese laserdisc on my X9.

Now is there anyone in Australia with a fast upload connection that would be willing to up this?

It would take about a month to upload on mine. PM me.

Cheers

Yep. Our goal here is to surpass the PQ of existing rips.

The X1 is actually my favourite machine out of all of them, but I need to recalibrate it.

Have you ever spun a really rotted disc on them, just to see how they cope with playing it back?

They play even my worst discs really well, and I can usually calibrate for a particular disc if need be.
