Lucas Talking about the fans of Star Wars at French Press Conference on May 16, 2005

"The older fans are loyal to the first three movies I made, and they are the ones in control of the media. The films that these people don't like, the first two prequels, are fanatically adored by fans under 25. They are always at each others throat about it."

That confirms that Lucas definitely knows about the rift between Star Wars fandom, and to me he knows we want the O-OT on DVD by making a statement that we, the older fans, are loyal to the older trilogy.

I think because most older fans don't like the PT, it makes him dig in even more, and it is almost like his 'Revenge' to say, "OK you want to bury my new trilogy, I'll keep changing the older films to fit my new trilogy so you will never forget Episodes I, II, and III, whether you like them or not.

Don't be fooled by Lucas guys, he knows exactly how we feel, and he always says he doesn't care what people think of his movies, and that he makes them whether we like it or not, B.S., he cares, because he believes the media who he feels loves the OT all of the sudden is the one that is spreading bad news about the Prequels.

But Lucas is also to say that the OT got bad reviews, and the critics never liked Star Wars, but now it is all our fault!

Hey George, make better movies, and we gladly defend them.

TPM and AOTC?!? Fanatical?!? OK, I don't think I would go that far! I like TPM and AOTC, but not like that. What was he thinking? No one is fanatical about TPM and AOTC!

Exactly!! I have never let or tried not to let my liking or the Classic Trilogy get in the way of liking the Prequels especially 1 and 2, to me Episode 1 is a bad film and Episode 2 slighty better but not on the level of Classics, and I dont believe many, if any Classic Trilogy fans wanted to hate the Prequels before they began because of some loyalty to his Old Trilogy.

I dont know the demographic but i am sure there are alot of under 25s that dont like the Prequels, I do know all the Prequel Bashing that goes on is not just the over 25s, and have seen of younger guys at it around the net, just as I am sure there are lot of over 25s who love the Prequels and love every second of it,as Ive also seen alot of that around the net, another thing i find telling is outside the Star Wars community(i go on general film sites/forums discussions with non SW friends) the Prequels are generally not liked and have a bad rep for things like CG overkill etc etc, the things that the O.T guys critise them for.and the originals are more liked/prefered....so I think George could be making an excuse for what some/many see as poor movies in a way..

This quote has been posted here. Twice. And my reply both times was: I'm 23 years old, and I despise the prequels. Not a very good theory, eh, George?
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. And I am 16 years old, and I am no fanatic of the prequels, as I posted above.

If George thinks fans went into Phantom Menace WANTING it to be a bad film, he's nuts. We all spent years looking forward to the film and wanted it be be as good as possible. The fans who disliked Menace were VERY dissapointed. Had we gone in looking for the film to suck, we wouldn't have been dissapointed at all!!!!

I hate George's defense of his films when he says the critics hated all of his films. First of all EVERY film gets some bad reviews. Titanic and Forrest Gump got a huge number of terrible reviews and went on to win Best picture! Somehow all the Oscar nods SW got went over his head. Not to mention Empire got plenty of rave reviews even back in 1980 (Pauline Kael, one of the toughest critics ever said Empire was the only good SW movie!) and once Jedi came out, Empire's critical acclaim grew and grew. However, notice that even after Sith as come out, the critics and fans have remained pretty consistant on their views of Menace and Clones.

George may think he's in a power struggle with the current fans, but the lack of respect he shows for the "older" fans is at times a disgrace. After all, if it weren't for the hundreds of millions who bought movie tickets back in 1977 for his film, there would be no sequels, no special editions, no ILM, no Skywalker Ranch, and no prequels.
George Lucas was seduced by the dark side. The OOT ceased to exist in his mind and became the Special Editions...." "They're more maching now than movies. Twisted and evil."

I am 15 and think the prequels and special editions of the originals suck.

I actually should of included in my post, but this excuse about the fans not liking them because of loyalty to the Old Trilogy is along the same lines as one of his other excuses (to paraphrase) "that the problem was the fans just wanted Darth Vader to run round with a lightsaber killing everyone. and thats what they wanted in Episode 1 and were dissapointed" to me that he is kind of lost touch, I certainly didnt expect that nor have anyone I have spoken to, prehaps he can feel that he can put out any old effort as Star Wars and it will make billions of dollars and he doesnt reliase the fans can actually tell what is a good film and what isnt, and thinks they would love it just because its Star Wars and was surprised when people didnt.............

I myslef am 16 years old and was a big fan of the OT back in 1995 to 1998... (I couldnt really distinguish the differences between the original and the 1997 release, just the enhanced effects).

Then I was somewhat a fan of the new SW films until about late 2002 where I really found the OT alot better over time...
I love the OT alot more than the prequels and can't have the prequels on the same level of greatness as the original films.

It seems Mr. Lucas has an excuse for everthing, no matter how much he has to stretch the truth to do it.

1. Why do the Prequels suck Mr. Lucas?

"Because the older generation controls the media, and they are mad they aren't just like the originals. They refuse to accept that I had this whole backstory planned out in detail, and it was always my vision to have Anakin create C-3PO, the midichlorians where always the origin of the Force, I wanted everyone in the OT to sound old and vague by never explaining it in detail, when I filmed ROTJ, Hayden haden't been born yet so we had to wait for that, in the meantime we grabbed some old guy named Sabastian Shaw, who we thought might closely resemble Hayden by the time we made Sith, unfortunately shaw's peformance wasn't good, so I decided to CGI Hayden's head onto Shaws body for emoting purposes."

2. Why did you make so many changes to the OT Mr. Lucas?

"It was always my vision to have these films look this way, we just didn't have the technology back then to do it, for example, back in 77' we never could have made Greedo shoot first, or Luke scream when he's falling in Cloud City, or make Des Webb act like he was in pain properly after Luke cut the Wampa's arm off, and that noise Obi-Wan makes to scare the sandpeople off...that is a noise only just now we are able to create, and Luke was supposed to have a green saber in ANH..and, and, and...."

3. You know there are alot of fans out there that would like the unaltered OT released in DVD, why is it you don't wan't to release it?.

"Because as I said before the Special Editions are my original vision, and cuz I don't wanna, I need to be a prat, and refuse to acknowledge that those films exist anymore, I don't really give a shit the vast majority of fans that grew up on that stuff, helped make be the rich famous person I am today, which in turn help me develop the technology to sufficently screw with these films.....what was the question again?...Oh and by the way, due to fan demand we have decided to release Ewoks, Caravan of Courage on DVD."

4. Do you plan to make more changes to both the prequels and OT?

"Yea, well I suppose I will, because the more I sit and evalute the OT film effects the more flaws I find, when I compare them to the PT effects...I may eventually have to CG the entire OT so that it matches more closely. originally we where goig to make more changes to the 2004 OT DVD boxset, but becuase It took so long, I decided to release it incomplete anyway, and deemed it good enough at the time, most fans will understand that it has a few minor issues, such as the sound is off, the color hues, Luke's green saber in ANH...no, that was intended...my bad."

5. Is it possible that the Original Trilogy fans are just uptight, and want to complain.

"Yes, I think that's the case, there's no valid reason they shouldn't like all the changes I've made to these films...They need to get a life, then someday when they create a successful film, they can take their own films and fuck with them all they want, and arrogantly snub their noses at the people that made me, I mean them so rich and succesful."

sure they are dude. they're called 10 year old boys. it has become more and more clear. the original star wars appealed to many different age groups, with boys from 13 to 21 being a great portion. these new films are geared for younger kids, and that is a great inherent flaw. its easy for little kids to just love the ships and effects and not even worry about the lack in all other departments, where as 18 year old dudes will pick apart a movie and make sure they know why they like it. that is why you fail George Lucas.

I know a 6 year old who is fanatical. Everything to do with the prequels he loves. Not only because the first two were available on DVD (his chosen format) before the OT.

And of course his parents are the ones spending the pounds/dollars!

Totally agree with you and that is why the PT, especially TPM & AOTC, will not pass the test of time 10-20 years from now. When I was 10 years old, and saw Jedi in the theaters, I loved it, to me it was just as good as the original, as I thought at the time ESB was too dark for me.

Fast forward 20 years later, and the consesus among older fans is Star Wars & ESB are debated for the #1 spot, and Jedi is clearly #3, still a very good movie, but as you get older you notice The Ewoks, and realize the Wookie Planet could have been cooler, but we all love the ending, cause it is made for the adults.

Now TPM, these kids who like it now because it looks cool, and great special effects, the Darth Maul duel is action-packed, and Jar Jar is sort-a funny will look back at many of things they loved, and will have grown out of them.

Same with AOTC, as they get older they will wince more at the love story, and begin to notice C-3PO's bad lines in the middle of the clone wars. And think the whole Jango Fett being Boba Fett's father was totally unnecessary.

ROTS, will atleast still have appeal, because it didn't dumb down the movie alot, but by then as they look at the trilogy, and just really like one movie, Star Wars will be an afterthought cause there will be some movie that comes along with better effects and cooler action.

The reason why the OT holds up 28 years later, is the characters! Han, Luke, Leia are the reason those films are lovable. Darth Vader is the ultimate bad guy, especially in ESB. ObiWan is the class of the trilogy, as we can always say we have an academy award winner in our movies, and The Emperor (before his over the top performance in ROTS), Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, Boba Fett, R2-D2, and C-3PO were some of the most memorable secondary characters. And of course the millenium falcon, the coolest spaceship in the history of movies.

To our generation who grew up with the OT, the special effects and the action made the movies THAT much better, but in the end it is the story and characters that hold up. Hence why we want an inferior effects O-OT on DVD.

I agree... mostly. You have reinforced my point that the three "great" SW films are ROTS, ANH, and ESB, while the threee that "lack" are TPM, AOTC, and ROTJ. What I hate, though, are those kids who love the PT, but don't care for the OT. Those people really piss me off, because it's obvious that they only like them for the "cool" effects and flashy scenes, and couldn't care less about the story..

I'm only 22 and I was an uber fan before the Prequals came out. When TPM came out I was so excited that I saw it twice, but then when it came out on video and I began to see it more and more, the more I found it to be...off slightly. The uphoria of seeing something new wore off and I saw the movie for what it really was. Poorly writen crap slathered with CGI. And the next to movies were just as painful, if not more so.

I just turned 22 last Friday December 2nd; born at the end of 1983, the year that gave us Return of the Jedi. I grew up watching and loving the old trilogy. I was 13 when the 1997 special editions came out, and I admit, I was excited because it was a chance to see Star Wars on the big screen, albeit in an altered format. I was 15 when Phantom Menace came out, and I was devastated by how crappy it was. I tried to find stuff to like in Episodes 2 and 3 but they too fell well short of the mark.

If George would just put the old versions of the old trilogy on DVD he'd cut his problems right in half. He's really his own worst enemy in some ways.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

nice try dude. however, i think we all know that even with Jedi's shortcomings, it remains a better film than all three prequels combined. period. you've gotta be kidding yourself to think that ROTS as in league with ANH and ESB.
