For me...it all came out in the end...

As some of you recall, I was faced with a major dilemma on 9/12 in regards to the Limited Edition release of the SW Trilogy. I, like many of you, think Lucas is an ass for relegating the OOT as bonus disks and for not giving them the royal treatment. All that aside, I'd like to share something with you...

On 9/12, I bought three of the trilogy sets from Best Buy. These were the sets that had the three movies in the "fairly okay, but nothing spectacular" looking tin. I bought one for myself which I did not open right away. The other two were for my sister and her brother in law. She gave me the money for both sets and she let me open hers so I could take a look at it in order for me to determine whether or not I wanted to keep the set. At first, I was not impressed and gave my sister's set to her and was going to return my unopened set for a full refund. My sister, on the other hand, loved the set, but hated the tin. It wouldn't fit properly on her shelf, so she didn't want it.

I got an idea.

I gave my sister $10 for just the tin. Then I went home and started two auctions on eBay for the tin from my sister and the tin from my still unopened set. Amazingly, both tins went for $35 a piece. After shipping and all, I had $70. I only paid $60 for the set at Best Buy, so I got all my money back. I got the $60 that I paid for the set at Best Buy and the $10 that I gave my sister for her tin. Essentially, I used Lucas' marketing gimmick with the tins against him and got all three movies for free. No money came out of my pocket at all. Pretty cool, huh?

So now....I'd like to share with you what I did with this set that I paid ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for...

This is what Lucas released...
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Return Of The Jedi

This is what I wanted...
OOT Bonus Disks

Oh! I got three free DVD cases too.
Cases

This is what I did with the rest...
Here's my opinion of your ego trip special editions, Georgie...
A close up...
Another close up...
Yet another close up...

Let's give a round of applause for...
Our hero!!!

I guess it all came out in the end. Thanks for giving me what I wanted George...I don't need the rest.

Congratulations on your genius plan! Personally, I would have kept the covers and inserts because I thought they looked pretty nice, but those Disc 1s deserved what they got.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Hail Hail the SE is dead! LOL Cable, that was great. But like Gaffer said, I'd have kept the inserts. Those are spiffy looking, and my only complaint is that A New Hope is written all over the SW case.

I plan on turning my Disc 1's into very attractive drink coasters.

And once my personal edit of the OT (which will be a hybrid of the SE and OOT) are complete, I will substitute them for the discs that currently reside in the space marked "Disc 1".

So it'll be the original, untampered, groundbreaking, and well-loved versions... as well as my own personal edition, which is primarily a 'Special Edition' minus the crap.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

What we should do is return the disc to Lucas at a convention in a large box with a respectful not attached. We need to find some way to politely get his attention.

Yeah, good luck with that.

Newsflash kids - George Lucas doesn't care about you. He does everything for himself, as well he should, and he wouldn't give a rat's ass what you think at this point. Cut up all the discs you want, mail 'em all back in fact - it's not going to change a thing. In fact, if there was a little piece of Lucas who cared enough to give you what you wanted (what is that, exactly?) it's DEAD now. You hear me, DEAD.

Ironically all this fanboy bickering has killed the noble cause. Lucas would have listened to the petition or letter writing campaign five years ago, but any chance of him placating the disgruntled fanbase is over. You've bitten the hand that feeds, and I hope you're all proud.

You've accomplished nothing by destroying them Cable. And I like you man, I think you're a cool guy, but you've done nothing besides make yourself feel better and get a couple titters out of the sheep here.

Actually, I have to agree with TheCassidy somewhat here. Lucas definitely doesn't care anymore. He serves the almighty dollar, plain and simple, but I don't think he has the right to overlook the fanbase that put him where he is. I don't have a problem with the schmuck making money....hell, I would too in his position....but there's a right and wrong way to do it. There's no reason whatsoever why all fans can't be happy. That can simply be done by treating the OOT with dignity and respect.

As for the noble cause...I don't think we killed it at all. Lucas killed it by releasing the OOT. The argument now is over a quality presentation. I entertain the opinion that Lucas released the OOT the way he did on purpose. He put it out to shut everyone up about getting them. At the same time, the low quality would spark another argument which would only make all of us look bad. Effectively, he shut us up and made us all look like wack-jobs at the same time. We got our OOT and we're still not happy....that's what's being said. And that's what's being used to dismiss us.

I know I've accomplished nothing except making myself feel a little better. I absolutely agree with that one. I've made it clear which version I prefer, that's all. The battle is over anyway. The cause was not won, it was only a partial victory for us. We got the OOT which means Lucas conceded a little and I won't spend one penny on ANYTHING Star Wars that Lucas puts out. He's lost this fan forever. I just wanted to show it somehow...

He doesn't care about the people who don't like what he's doing.

He still remembers the fans who made him what he is today, he just doesn't put much stock in the ones who turned their back on him since ESB or ROTJ. To him they are in the same pile he put the people who said the O-OT sucked.

But he loves his fans.

Yep, he cares only about money anymore, and that's exactly why we will be seeing the OUT again very soon and his final middle finger to all OUT fans...

Good job, Cable-X1! I was thinking about doing something very similar but then suddenly stopped caring, and realized it wasn't worth the hassle to me.

I'd like to add something quick...

This whole business with the state of SW is so damn sad, it's not funny. Who would have thought something that that affected so many people in such a positive way would end up like this.

I know it's just a movie when you get down to it, but there's no difference between a SW fan and a Green Bay Packers fan who paints his face green and stands in the cold all day Sunday. Sure, the Packers might win and they might lose, but they come back each year to try again.

SW has degraded into this sad piece of shit that no one really cares about anymore. I thought it would be like the Lord Of The Rings novels. It would be this revered piece of fiction that would captivate audiences for decades or centuries....

....well...at least half of it will.

If being a fan means having to sit through shitty video game cutscenes (read: PT), then I'm not sure I want that honor.

I'm a fan of the artist Lucas once was, the one who brought about a cinematic revolution with a cool space movie, came up with stories like Indiana Jones, and gave the fans what they wanted.

Now he just cares more about his various cinema industry empires (Lucasfilm, ILM, Lucasarts, etc.) to really give a damn about making good movies anymore. So be it. If he's not gonna put in the effort to give us quality products, then I'm not gonna put in the effort to be a quality fan.

Nanner is right here.....not sure I'd want to be a fan of such hokey crap.

gave the fans what they wanted.

I don't think it was ever about what the fans wanted back then. Lucas and Spielberg were out to impress themselves and make movies that would knock them out as filmgoers. I contend that the fans haven't changed, Lucas has. I didn't have outlandish expectations when I sat in the midnight show of TPM back in '99. I remember thinking that this is going to be different, yet familiar. Other than that, I really had no expectations and I still don't like TPM. Lucas changed...we didn't. We just wanted a STAR WARS movie....and whatever comes with a STAR WARS movie. Those prequels were not STAR WARS movies.

Lucas is older, jaded, unchallenged, obtuse and most of all...comfortable. The rest of us are still the wide-eyed, imaginative and impressionable kids and young people we were back in the glory days, who seek the same thrill, that's all. An ambitious and imaginative storyteller could have satiated our desire for a STAR WARS movie. Lucas is not such a storyteller anymore.

If I may be so bold as to make a comparison here....the OT is like Jaws and the PT is like Jaws: The Revenge. Anyone else agree with this?

I am glad you guys realized that he was never doing this to "please the fans". He always did it first and foremost to please himself.

Some of you believe Lucas is the one who changed, but to me, he's the same old stubborn artist he was when he made the originals. Wide eyed imaginative, youthful people would have had a much more open mind for the prequels. They would have been able to imagine their way around the plot holes like they did the classic trilogy, and they would be able to roll along with the less than perfect acting writing or directing. It's a lot of us who have grown cynical, jaded, and unreasonable.

He's still pushing the technology of motion pictures ahead as he goes, bringing about digital film making and distriubtion when nobody else would risk the investment.

It's not that Lucas only cares about money, if that were the case, he would bend over backwards to "please the fans".

He is just an artist with a clear vision for what he wants, and he isn't going to have anyone else tell him what his own movies should be. Not even people who supported him with the classic trilogy.

At the end of the day we are talking about a matter of taste, not of "right and wrong".

How Lucas finishes his saga is not about whether he is doing it "right" or "wrong", it's wether or not you personally happen to like what he does.

Again, I am with you on the whole "getting a standard quality release of the O-OT", because I don't fault people for prefering the originals, and hope they can get the most out of Star Wars by having it the way they really want it.

But you can't blame him for how -he- prefers his own art to remain after he's gone.

Nobody says you guys have to be a fan of stuff you don't like. I'm just saying what Lucas does shouldn't be dependant on what you like. It should be dependand on what -he- likes, because it's his art.

See, it's statements like this that get people pissed off at you, Gomer. You keep saying that the reason we didn't enjoy the prequels because we "weren't open-minded enough." It couldn't possibly have been the fact that the movie was badly made, and we didn't gravitate toward the garbage. Which is worse, really? The ones that "weren't open minded enough" because they thought the plot holes were stupid, or the apologists that say that it's okay to have plot holes simply because it has the Star Wars name on it, because it was "George's original vision"?

That is utter codswallop, Go-Mer-Tonic! What you're talking about is having low standards for the quality of a film. I am proud that I will not call bad acting good or just ignore poor writing or direction. If you can honestly say that you will take any old crap just because you want to be able to enjoy it, then I feel sorry for you. I have high standards when it comes to cinema and, for me, the most enjoyment I get is from seeing films made well.
