For fun...What would be in your Star Wars DVD package?

Author
Time
This is light hearted, fun stuff, and there may be a thread for it...but I'm wanting to know for the fans/devotees out there, if you had the ability of customizing/creating your own Star Wars DVD set, how would it look? What kind of features would you provide?...get really creative, and have fun with this one.

I will cultivate patience to such a degree, that time itself will grow tired of waiting.

Restored version, but with no new footage (i.e., that wasn't around in 1977); prolly have 1977 cut and an alternate cut with additional footage from 1977 such as the Biggs scene toward the end, 2.0 and 5.1 sound, possibly include some dubbed/subbed versions. Similar, perhaps, to the T2 discs.

Here it is:

A 7 disc boxset including the original unaltered versions, digitally cleaned up visually (black matte lines, transparecy and garbage mattes mainly) and audiowise, with three commentaries for each film. One by Lucas and various other technical vizards, one strictly with the actors, mainly Harrison Ford, Mark Hammill and Carrie Fisher with inputs from Anthony Daniels, James Earl Jones etc. Finally a soundtrack only commentary by maestro John Williams. Each film would have it´s own full DVD of bonus material including all four original docs: Making Of Star Wars, SP-FX, Classic Creatures and From Star Wars To Jedi. On each bonusdisc there would be a collection of old interviews with the cast and crew both internal publicity interviews and bits from various TV programs and stuff like that. We could also read the original scripts for each movie. We would get the original auditions and screen test including the ones with Kurt Russell and Cindy Williams. For each movie there would be a HUGE gallery of stills from the movies with a gentle John Williams music playing over it. There would be four trailers for each movie including teaser, release, re-release and 97 SE as well as a shitload of TV spots and radio spots.

A fourth bonus disc would contain new interviews with cast and crew and and the two and half hour "a look back retrospective" doc "Empire Of Dreams". We would get deleted scenes including the scenes with Luke and Biggs on Tatooine, the wampa attack in ESB, the sandstorm in ROTJ and more. We would get storyboard to final film comparison with angle selection and special effects breakdown for key moments in the trilogy presented by Dennis Muren and co. A feature on the puppetry involved presented by Frank Oz where Yoda and other characters are featured. Also a feature on the whole Star Wars toy and videogame phenomenon with the original Kenner figures and all that stuff, the arcades and various videogames. There would also be a feature on John Williams´s music for the trilogy. And finally a special Ben Burtt feature on how all those cool sound were made.

That´s about it (I think). What an incredible release that would make, I´m shitting in my pants here got damn it!!

I just had an idea, adding to the customiziation of DVD's. The name would be DVD-C ( Digital Versatile Disc-Customized.) Maybe in the future, film studios wil develop sites with an incredible wealth of information, providing a complete listings of every extra, documentary, still photograph, featurette, trailer, tv spot, every sound option from mono, stereo, DTS, 5.1 surround , etc... every version of a film evermade, Director's Cut, Theatrical Release, etc...ever made.

We the consumer/fans of any film (including Star Wars) could select any feature(s) or version(s), sound format(s), etc...we wanted in our sets/non-sets.

Customizing would be EXPENSIVE, and a heavy encryption would have to be placed for piracy.

I'm imagining that a customized set/non-set would range anywhere from about $50.00(basic single disc) to $500.00(the unimaginable super-set). You could also have the option of designing your own cover-packaging ( which would be included in the price if you choose studio-select images.) or for the artist in you a $100.00 -$300.00(depending on set/non-set size) more you could download a special software program from the studio and totally customize your packaging which would in turn be sent back to the studio and created.)

What would a Star Wars fan do with this? Thread up baby!

Well, for me the ultimate set would include the original theatrical versions along with the final Lucas versions for each film. A commentary track for all three films that included Lucas and other key production folks as well as an actor commentary with Hamil, Ford and Fisher.

Each film would have it's own special features disc that would include deleted scenes, all trailers, TV spots, galleries, and the making of specials that aired on TV. The Empire of Dreams documentary would be split into three different documentaries and each would be 2hrs long and focus specifically on each film.

Other than that, I can't think of anything else that the set would need to have. At least in my eyes. A John Williams commentary would be nice but not necessary.

Perhaps as a mail in bonus you could send away for the Holiday Special. That way, only the real die hards would send away for it.

There was much extra material that was planned for this DVD set but had to be cut to save time. Expect the Ultimate Edition to include all six movies. Expect more changes for all six movies. Expect high definition picture and high quailty lossless audio. Expect deleted scenes and alot more making of extras. Don't expect the original versions.

I would want the audio to not be messed up like ANH DVD's. You know, just a thought.

“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Expect someone to come after jimbo in the night. ^_^

As for me, widescreen, the original sound mixes, fully and non-destructively restored, with a great deal of what's been mentioned above extras wise. I don't really carefor bonus material anyway(though I might rent the extra disc tomorrow). Oh, and a D-VHS release sometime soon might be nice(provided my TV is actually HD-ready).

Made for IE Forum's Episode III theme month - May 2005.

My Wish List:

Films:

Completely restored theatrical version w/ NO effects touchups(I want that blob under the speeder) For historical purposes.

Fabled Rough Cut version

Lucas' Archival Edition

Enhanced version: w mattes fixed and little touchups and tweaks.

No FX version: sans all opticals w/ branching between the other versions (cept rough cut) to get idea of work involved to complete the film.

Fan Cut Version: able to pull from different versions of the film, including deleted scenes, to create your own cut of the film. With space available on DVD for this....but need PC to do it. Each disc would be imprinted so each disc could not burn a fan cut.

Deleted Scenes

Isolated Score w/ John Williams commentary

Isolated Sound Effects track w/ Ben Burtt commentary

Commentaries:

1: Lucas and Kurtz.......together at last.

2: McCallum and Lucas....on Archival cut

3: Lucas and editors on rough cut

4: Joe Johnston, Dennis Muren, Dykstra, Edlund, McQuarrie, effects track

5: Harrison Ford, Fisher, and Hamill.

6: Behind the Masks track: Daniels, Baker, Mayhew, Prowse, some of the Cantina creators who also performed as the Cantina band: Rob Bottin, Doug Beswick, Tippett, Rick Baker(!!!!) and Tom St. Amand....maybe some of the little folks who played Jawas.

Various versions of the screenplay

McQuarrie art gallery

Storyboards w/ branching to film versions.

ILM's work featurette

Sound of SW featurette

Marketing SW featurette

Various documentaries

New featurettes.....show impact of film on industry, the phenomenon, on filmmakers, etc.

Stills gallery....chock full.....basically every picture(lol)

Trailers, TV spots, posters, etc.

Hi. My answer is pretty much like most people's:

Disc 1: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope Ultimate Edition.
(George's complete computer-generated "vision", but also with every error fixed.)
- Commentary track by George Lucas, Gary Kurtz, tech guys, etc.
- Commentary track by cast (as many as possible).
- Isolated musical score track.

Disc 2: Star Wars (1977)
(The very original. I have a philosophy that you may as well keep the bad matte-lines and white lightsabers, and accept the trade-off between error-full originals and error-corrected new versions. But picture and sound should be optimised as much as possible to pass DVD standards.)

Disc 3: Star Wars supplementary material
- Deleted scenes, with explanations (but no CG "completion").
- Very comprehensive documentary, such as the first 90 mins of Empire Of Dreams, but expanded to include 100 other stories. Perhaps running to 3 hours. This would cover everything.
- Trailers
- Very complete poster, stills and artwork archive.
- Gag reel.
- Holiday Special as easter egg :-)

Disc 4: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Ultimate Edition.
(George's complete computer-generated "vision", but also with every error fixed.)
- Commentary track by George Lucas, Gary Kurtz, tech guys, etc.
- Commentary track by cast (as many as possible).
- Isolated musical score track.

Disc 5: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
(The very original.)

Disc 6: The Empire Strikes Back supplementary material
- Deleted scenes, with explanations (but no CG "completion").
- Very comprehensive documentary, such as the 45 mins covered in Empire Of Dreams, but expanded to include 100 other stories. Perhaps running to 3 hours. This would cover everything.
- Trailers
- Very complete poster, stills and artwork archive.
- Gag reel.

Disc 7: Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi Ultimate Edition.
(George's complete computer-generated "vision", but also with every error fixed.)
- Commentary track by George Lucas, tech guys, etc.
- Commentary track by cast (as many as possible).
- Isolated musical score track.

Disc 8: Return of the Jedi (1983)
(The very original.)

Disc 9: Return of the Jedi supplementary material
- Deleted scenes, with explanations (but no CG "completion").
- Very comprehensive documentary, such as the last half hour of Empire Of Dreams, but expanded to include 100 other stories. Perhaps running to 3 hours. This would cover everything.
- Trailers
- Very complete poster, stills and artwork archive.
- Gag reel.

Disc 10: More supplementary material
Another three hours of stuff that didn't fit into the main documentaries for each film.

Way way waaaay too hopeful, aren't I?
