Z, the problem I have with yours is that it doesn't match the PT. The core in the PT is always 100% white, with the glow around it. Otherwise it looks fine.

zebonka, the lightsaber you rotoscoped looks fantastic. You also corrected a bit of the angle that I think even the official DVDs got wrong.

Heh thankyou. For more on lightsabers you should look at the fanfilm forum at theforce.net. That's where I picked up most of it. Mind you they don't do it exactly like the old movies, but they give you a great starting point from which you can mimic the old look.

I don't know if anyone has caught this or it was just the one screen cap I took but in the DVD the blade and hilt of the saber don't meet up.

I'm talking about where he's training the on falcon.

Anyway I'm going to try this. It could be fun. I'll be back with a sample soon.

that is quite nice, the glow might extend down onto his hands a bit too much (or too brightly) but other than that it looks great.

Ok, so here is the deal. I rewatched ROTS again tonight and we are all basically off. The blue is nowhere near dark enough in any of our pictures. The core should be solid white, never changing. The aurora around it goes from light blue to dark blue at the outer most edge. When the saber is moved, the blue is dialed down and the white is dialed up. Atleast, if you are trying to get it to match the awesome PT sabers. If you are wanting to go for the OT look, then I guess most of them are right.

I personally like the PT sabers the best, but to each their own. That's why I'm rotoscoping them to be that way, so there is consistency. Unfortunately, when I went from dvd footage to photoshop and then back, the image quality was shot all th hell, so now I have to figure out a new way to rotoscope 84 friggin frames. Awesome!

The thing about Jedi is that they have the cores right for the most part. Atleast, the thickness and brightness match at times. But there are the trouble spots.

No it ain't, even ROTS had more glow than that.

And let's be clear, the prequels aren't the movies you want to mimic. At most, you'd go after Phantom Menace. But the other two aren't nearly as good as the lightsabers in the old movies. They actually look like lightsources.

No, if I want consistency, I would want the Saber to match that in ROTS, as it is the exact same lightsaber. No one from TPM has their same lightsaber in ROTS, the closest of the PT to the OT.

Here is the version of the saber I will be using for the rotoscoping, glow included this time: ( I think the core may still be a bit too big, but that's an easy fix.

It looks a little to fake. It just looks like it was made with photoshop. I'm not sure what it is but something isn't right.

Oh I see, you're thinking from 1 to 6. Ok.

In that case it would make sense to redo the lightsabers to match ROTS (in which they look better than in AOTC) but in my view you'd just be better off fixing AOTC and ROTS so that the lightsabers look both better and match up with the Old Movies.

While not as dark as I originally had in mind, I believe this is the final version I'm going to rotoscope with. I'm about half way through this scene. I want to get atleast 60% of it done so I can get a good source to look at to see what needs touched up.

Luke's lightsaber doesnt really fad away, it just kinda drops its blue color. Anakins fades more.

Agreed. The corona isn't constant - it fades, almost cloudlike, farther from the blade.

No, they don't, but I believe it does this on the LDs as well.
