Finally At Peace With Star Wars...

Really weird...but now that the Original Trilogy is being officially releases as I loved and remembered it, I am suddenly finding myself (strangely) at peace with Star Wars.

I think it's weird...but I will now be able to separate the "Saga" from the "Trilogy," and enjoy them both on different levels. Sure, I've got various fan preservations, but it just wasn't the same as having official copies.

Maybe it has something to do with Lucas finally acknowledging the fan base that really wanted this to happen...he should be grateful his movies have fans that are willing to hang in there for the long haul.

Not to sound to sentimental or anything...

I know what you're saying, man. I feel like I have a piece of my childhood back and now I can just move on. I still don't like the direction Star Wars has gone in, but as long as I have the OOT to enjoy for the rest of my life, I'm happy.

Last night was the first time in 10 years I felt no angst against SW fans I disagreed with. For the record, before the SE & PT, I never disagreed with them growing up, so one is the effect of the other.

But I have to say I am relieved I can watch my favorite 3 movies of all-time in the versions I love, and not think about defending something that may become extinct someday. There is nothing more frustrating then growing up loving the OT, and see a bunch of new fans take over the saga, and Lucas continually catering to their needs, "Oh, you guys want more SE changes, here you go!" "You guys want more CG in the next prequel, here you go!"

I don't give a rats ass what people say about the O-OT anymore, cause I can watch it on DVD, knowing that there isn't this definitive edition bullshit by Lucas, and the millions of fans supported from 77-83 don't exist. I don't have to hear that Hayden is the force ghost, or Greedo shoots first, or Jabba first appears in ANH.

Now every SW fan can watch what they want, and we don't have to debate which is the proper way of watching it. By Lucas releasing this version along with the SE in the same case, he saying to let the fans decide.

If fans want to watch Hayden's mug at the end of ROTJ, or see a wideshot of Mos Eisley, feel free, I don't have to anymore.

Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi

The saga FINALLY comes full circle for me Sept. 12th, and nobody can take that away.

I am at peace............................

I kinda of feel the same, while I enjoyed the fan transfers of OOT which I am most grateful, now its gonna been officialy released, it will be nice to be able watch the original films on an official DVD. I am gonna be content after that with Star Wars, as I now have my definitive versions of the Prequels, the SE (ADMs) and now an offical OOT, which is coming, I dont particulary care anymore about anything that happens in the future for Star Wars be it a new edition, Thetrical release, TV series etc which I will leave that to the younger guys now we have that release in September,

the only thing Star Wars releated i will keep an eye for is any future fan productions from the guys here.

I'm so relieved to hear someone else say that. Today I've been enjoying Star Wars for the first time in six years. Lucas can (and will) do Special and Special-er editions until he's blue in the gills. As long as I've got my originals, he can do what he wants.

I'm all for artistic vision and control and all that. But those are his. Star Wars is mine. (Now how do we get the original Superman and Star Trek: The Motion Picture edits back?)

It's like graduation over here. It's finally done and over, and we get to have our beloved movies. But also a little sad because many of us will move on now that the "war is over."

It was a long winter fight, but we finaly have victory. I can now pull my 1997 VHS editions out of the back and present them forward. They sit there, unwatched, but loved because of the memories tied with them when I was young and all my giggly school girl friends and I lined up at the theater to see these movies again...for the first time (I was born in 1983.)

My PT DVDs can now retire their jobs as table costers and have a place of peace in my DVD cabinet. The movies may not have been that great, but by god... the memories I will hug tight forever. The hype, the long line for tickets, the giddy feeling all summer long as I listened to my latest soundtrack edition.

Thank you George. I'm glad we are on speaking terms again. It had been much too long.

Now if we can only get Lucas to release an edit of the PT sympathetic to the OOT.

I can't explain it, but it's like this wave of anger and frustration with Lucasfilm has been lifted. It feels like a dream because one day we are discussing all these great preservation sets and wondering when the OOT is going to be officially released and the next day we here that it is being released. Their is no real way to put into words how I feel. This is truly the Day of Star Wars for me. That is the closest thing to putting it into words.

I'm sorry, prequels, you're not as bad in this light.

I mean you had some ugly siblings, but your parents truley shine.

Editing the prequels feels less like turd-polishing now.

My stance on revising fan edits.

What I'd like to know is how is it possible to release a trilogy that doesn't exist?

Lucas is quoted saying the O-OT no long exists. Either Lucas is about to perform miracle or he's been lying.

Lying!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

He's famous for saying contradictory things. He also said something like "They'll probably get released once VHS is obsolete, though they won't get the work done to them that the 2004 versions did" (those aren't his words, that was just the gist).

Yeah. Anyway.
Was Robert Wise on crack when he made that Special Edition of ST:TMP? I was pleasantly surprised to see that 3-6 weren't interfered with and I actually *liked* the stuff that got put into Star Trek 2. 5 out of 6 ain't bad.

Anyway.

I'm happy that this OOT thing is finally working out. Though I must admit, I thought I was onto a winner when I got Moth3r's ANH disc. That thing is solid gold.

That was the most frustrating part for me. My past was being erased all in the name of profit made by catering to a bunch of new fans that have no attention spans.

Or even worse, almost vulgar - castrating characters so that they are good guys now. One of the things that first appealed to me back when I saw the originals when they were first shown at the theaters was that the story and the characters paralleled real life. Sometimes things don't go as planned and sometimes you come across people who aren't all that trustworthy. There isn’t always a happy ending and not everyone is a good guy. It was very strange to see Lucas turn a serious film into a bedtime story.

However, as many have said recently, I don’t have that feeling of betrayal anymore, or of anger. I can watch the movie I grew up with and not have to listen to someone tell me it never happened, or wasn’t supposed to happen.

It doesn't have to be that way. People can still discuss the original trilogy. After all, we're all here because we really like it. It's a passion, an escape, a part of our journey. We've spent plenty of time discussing it, but now there won't be this preoccupation with, or this threat of, it being taken away forever while we try to find a way to save it.

Sure, the war is over - but now, the original trilogy isn't. I'll make that trade any day.

IRONIC!
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

That may be. However, in September I'm going to purchase the only version of the film I've ever seen and am ever going to see. I don't care if he releases a new version every year for the rest of his life. I don't have to concern myself with it anymore. I really am at peace with his lying and revised history.

I'll have a copy of the very same movie I sat in theaters and watched every week of 1977 - the same movie that spoke to me, that moved me, that transported me. Whichever version moves other people is for them to decide. I'm happy for all of us. They'll go on their adventure and I'll go on mine.

Can someone who has been raped be "un-raped?" That is now the ultimate question for all those who said "Lucas raped my childhood." Maybe we're just making peace with our rapist.

I know what you mean. That term always bothered me, and I used to go out of my way to argue against the use of it.

With a couple of days to digest the news and observe the reactions on this board, I've come to realize that Star Wars is such a wholly personal experience for so many that you'll never make them all happy. Regardless of what Lucas does to the feanchise, for better or for worse, people won't be content until they get their ideal version of the films.

This release is ideal enough for me. I can understand the reaction even if I don't agree with it - a good deal of Star Wars fans have felt betrayed and the community is far more polarized now than it ever was.

When it comes down to it though, I'm happy. Am I a little bit let down that perhaps the 2006 DVD release won't be exactly as it was in 1977...maybe a little, but these are still the versions I grew up with so it's good enough for me. I don't remember which sound mix I saw in 1977 in the theatre, or if Aunt Beru's voice was different...I was 4 years old. I

Having said that, I think I understand the younger folks who grew up with the Special Editions a little bit more now...

I've never seen any of the Special Editions, altered versions, or the last two prequels - and I never will. So, that's not a problem for me. I've been watching Star Wars about twice a year in the form of a really old VHS tape. That's why I'm looking forward to the DVD of the original version. I'll be able to watch it whenever I want without worrying about ruining the media.

I'm not terribly concerned with Lucas, anything he's done to the films, or anything he's planning on doing to them. I don't read interviews with the guy or seek out any explanations as to why he does what he does. I honestly don't care.

I knew better than to watch any of those other versions. In my world, there's no weird CGI, no dodgy sound, no color changes, no added characters, no altered story, no castrated characters, and no one is related to each other. It's a bunch of strangers, brought together by different circumstances, that go on a serious outer space adventure. It's not a bedtime story. There's nothing for me to un-see or un-learn.

It's been a really long haul and I've had to go long periods without seeing one of my favorite movies of all time. It wasn’t easy or fun. However, in September all my abstinence and perseverance will have paid off.
