2D vs 3D

There are slight differences in color.  Of course, if you prefer the look of the 3D, you could always demux the left-eye stream, add the mattes back and re-encode with x264.

@Harmy: rutracker has a 25gb version of the HDTV broadcast.

And yeah, it's horrible that they changed so much for the blu-ray. And actually there's one more "change" in the 3D version other than being open matte. It's mentioned at the bottom of that article I linked but it's not as visible there:

To convert the movie to 3D they had to cut out all characters from the backgrounds, and as a result all characters have blurred edges, more or less. It's very visible if comparing the edges of their hair.

^  It looks like recompressing the 3D BD is a bad idea then.

Final cut? do not forget some DNR, the Workprint is one of the most honest BD transfers out there

Yeah, the final cut is horribly teal-tinted. And actually I haven't seen the workprint BD. I gotta get it!

Yeah I agree with you bkev, if all cuts are available in high quality then I'm fine with altered releases existing too. I just wanted to point out that the color timing of the final cut is in fact horrible.

If clean edges are what you want then grab the WMV-HD somewhere. It's 1440x916 anamorphic and contains a few lines that were cropped from every other release.

The loss caused by the vertical stretch on the JP is obvious. Take a look at the shingles in the first comparison. Unfortunately the theatrical cut EU/AU HD DVD/Blu-ray encode had a level of DNR applied that wasn't used for the superior Special Edition encode.

It is a cool curio but has a few issues, and it is not fantastic with motion.

It was super cool when it came out tho, there were a few WMV discs mostly in Germany.

I will still go to bat for the UK disc all day long, mind you with AVC the first US disc would have been well up there!

Talking of JP my importer has the new 3D version in stock but looking at the DNR and colour timing of it I am not up for spending £30.99 on it.

Just curious, does anyone know if there's been an attempt to colour correct the awful green tint on the Fellowship of the Ring Extended BD?  I've been looking for something like this for a while now.
