Most of the games are early in the US due to the time difference. Today's games on ESPN were 10am EST and 2pm EST. I think there will even be 7am EST games.

not. :p
Ugh, those damn horns. I was hoping it was just when the home team played last morning, but they're blowing all the time (except during the national anthems, thank goodness).
O say does that star-spangled banner, ever yet wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?
The nighttime lighting is causing a really weird effect where all players look like they are surrounded by an "X" like in a video game. For a moment I thought ESPN was doing some weird marking thing to help us football noobs...
...well, England just scored. Crap.
Anyway, turns out the "X" is just four distinct shadows of the player. Really weird.
oh dear oh dear!!!
1 - 0 haha
Oops!!!
Thanks, Mr. Goalie.
What a twat!!!!

a tie. kissing your sister. oh well.
my reactions to watching my first soccer game: wtf?
why were the goalies wearing different uniforms than the rest of the players? In hockey the goalie wheres the same uniform as the rest of the team(with the exception of the helmet).
the clock was counting up instead of counting down.
the clock was always running no matter what. goals scored, clock ran. ball kicked out of bounds, clock ran. players got injured, the clock still ran. wtf? I now know why this game isn't popular in the states. The networks won't let be. There were no commercial breaks during the game(with the exception of halftime). commercials=money for the networks. I doubt they'd like having a sport that doesn't allow for commercial breaks become popular.
why was 4 minutes added to the game? Near the end of regulation time, the announcers said the something about the refs deciding how much time to add to the end. So the refs can just add however much time they want to the game????
the game ending in a tie, why was there no overtime? They must have some way about breaking a tie in the upper rounds.
When the clock read about 84:00 , a USA player was escorted off the field by the ref? why? It didn't look like he did anything wrong. What happened?
Finally, what in gods name was that annoying sound. It sounded that giant swarm of insects had attacked the stadium. Who was making that sound, how were they making it and why? It was so annoying. I hope this doesn't continue throughout the tournament. I wanted to jump through the tv screen with a machine gun in each and shoot whomever making that sound. They should make that against the rules. Anyone caught making that sound should thrown out of the stadium.
can anyone please give me some answers to my questions?
go read a football for beginners guide
while I'm sure it might help me with some of my questions, I doubt it would tell my the US player was removed by ref at around 84:00, nor would it address the annoy noise during the game.

What a friendly helpful reply!
ok, figured out what the annoying sound was. Its some sort of South African horn. They play them at all the soccer games down there. God how annoying.

You are right about the ties. It is sort of like the NASCAR races (which I enjoy even less than soccer). The points build as the tournament goes along.
The extra time is based on an estimate by the officials on how much time is spent as down-time. So while the clock always runs, even after goals and during injuries when they are carting some schmuck off of the field. Game officials estimate how much time was spent standing around and not running back and forth and add that time to the end of the game.
Here's what I don't get about stoppage time (right term, correct?). Why not just stop the clock? Basketball, American Football, Hockey all stop the clock when the ball or puck goes out of play, when someone is hurt, when there is a penalty or foul, etc. Why not in football too? Stop the clock, line up, blow the whistle, start the clock again. Makes more sense to me than having someone guess at remaining time.
I used to think it was dumb having time count up instead of down, but I'll admit it's handy to be able to say "The English goalie fucked up in the 42nd minute" instead of "The English goalie fucked up with three minutes left in the first half."
deleted- Frink beat me to it.
I'd have to read a football for beginners guide to tell you that.
what would a guide about football be able to tell you about soccer? :p
That joke is so last page.
ok,ok. very well, a compromise: I'll call it futbol, ok?
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!
Man, I can't believe I am on the internet talking about soccer. I think I am going to go outside for a while.
Lol.
What a plie of shit...Really, USA would have lost that game if it wasn't for a stupid, butterhanded, arsehole golie...sill, he kind of redeemed himself with a pretty good save in the second half.
Still, two more games to go in this group, witch we should win...and so should USA..so,maybe we'll see you again in the quarters or semis (don't really know hoe it works)
