Feeling very down about the current state of Star Wars

Author
Time

With further changes to the films on Blu-ray, and news about the lack of the OOT in the LOC, I've really been feeling bummed out towards Star Wars these days. In fact, I don't think I've ever felt more loathing towards the whole Star Wars phenomena than I do now. Anyone else feel the same?

Sometimes.

But really, I have the Harmy versions to watch. I have SW:R and am eagerly awaiting ESB:R.

Frankly, most movies I love DON'T have a "current state" to feel one way or the other about. I own "Casablanca" and watch it sometimes. That's it.

So whenever I'm pissed at Lucas, or not enjoying the EU or something, I just remember that it's the movies that I love, and the rest is just gravy.

Meh.

In fact, I would argue that these are exciting times compared to even fairly recently.  dark_jedi and harmy have shown that we can have very good preservations to watch, ANH:R is a great watch and ESB:R is on the way, people seem to like The Clone Wars, the Blu-ray special features look pretty cool, awareness of the OOT issue is rising due to the coverage of the Blu and the work of people like zombie, there is the opinion voiced by Bill Hunt and others that Lucas will have no choice but to put out the OOT next time in order to get sales...

And I hear there is a hilarious fanedit coming soon that will cheer you up ;-)

I'm just beaten down by it all. The fan restorations, for some reason, don't bring me any solace. I guess I'm really disappointed in Lucas - a man I admired so much in the past. His contempt for the OOT seems like borderline insanity.

I haven't liked anything Lucas has done for almost 20 years, so I guess I've had plenty of time to put my sunglasses on and deal with it. I'll just echo Boost and Frink. The fantastic new restorations, fanedits and documentaries, and the recently released deleted scenes make this one of the most exciting times to be a fan.

I don't know about the "current" part, things have been the same for OOT fans for a looooooong time. I mean, I've said it before but I'm surprised at the "anger" and "depression" (if you can call it that) over the blu-rays. What did people expect? He fricking put Hayden's head on Anakin's body last time. Yes it sucks, but we knew this was coming. Actually it seems this time it was rather mild compared to other revisions, we only got the NOOOO!!!, Obi's "Little Richard getting his balls burned" impression, blinking ewoks, some rocks and Sebulba.

I thought the OOT was confirmed to be in a LoC protected vault - just not available for vewiing?

Anyway, Harmy's work changed things for me.   Things turned around with the RLM reviews because they completely discredited Lucas and the PT and confirmed what I've felt for years.  But it didn't make it easier to accept that the OOT was not available and Lucas was going to continue to play with his toys.

Once Harmy came out with his de-specialized editions, i've been feeling much better and was able to enjoy as if it were the good old days again.

I'll always be disgusted at what has happened to the once proud saga formerly known as star wars,  but I can also shake my head and laugh at it as well.

in a perfect world, I would have:

1) the OOT in pristine, remastered HD - immortalized for a thousand generations.

2)A confession from lucas that his whole 'original vision' nonsense was a crock and everything from 1983 -2005 was one giant 3 card monte (playing not only the fans, but also the PT cast and crew)

3)The PT's legacy ends up like that Beware the Octopus movie Booth mentioned.

the second point may not happen, but thats just a formality.  It would just confirm what we all know.  Most important thing is OOT.  and I think within next 10 years is a good shot.  In the mean time,  OOT in 720p is the centerpiece to my movie collection

Seriously, have a few drinks, turn down the lights, and watch Harmy's Despecialized Editions.

I understand your disillusion with Lucas, but he's managed to slowly alienate me over the years. The movies are more important to me than the man.

I suppose I went through that same feeling of being deflated many years ago. Which is really funny now considering how little Lucas had weakened the story at that point.

I eventually made peace with it and, as Boost and Erik said, picked what was meaningful to me and said goodbye to the rest.  Trust me, it's easier than you think and it makes the parts you still dig mean even more.

This is my personal canon;

Not much by Star Wars standards, but huge compared to one-film-only stories.  I can't even begin to complain.

Officially, the Star Wars franchise is considerably weaker than it was 15-20 years ago. It's diluted and pampers everything to try and make the PT look better. It's just a joke at this point beyond the egregious changes to the OT and the shoddy blu-ray color timing and other issues.

After ROTS I basically lost interest in the SW franchise in terms of anything coming out after 2005. I like some EU stuff (e.g. Thrawn), I'll always love the UOT, but at this point I don't give a shit about the current phenomenon that SW is.

Do you mean the official products, or is there some franchise rating board I was previously unaware of?

With all the crap that swirls around a position literally no other filmmaker has ever taken, it's easy to get worn out and feel down. Was that one big happy fandom I glimpsed back in 1987 at the 10th anniversary con ever real at all?

But when I think about the projects that have come out thanks to the hard work of many members here, and the projects waiting in the wings, that usually cheers me up.

I mean anything that Lucas "officially" churns out currently. But, in unofficial terms we have the preservations and other things that keep the UOT alive.

I guess to some the state of SW is whatever products are on store shelves or on tv, while to others its what we keep alive from the older era.

But yes, there is a franchise rating board. You've never heard?

I was there, it totally was!

But if you think of the original version stupidness as a separate company policy thing, there's nothing to be down about to me. Star Wars came to a natural end in '83, so anything I've enjoyed since then is just gravy.

the conventions get bigger every year and so do the charity foundations and anything else relating to SW. I doubt SW will be dying anytime soon. Especially when you got the younger generation growing up with the the saga and watching clone wars on tv.

And i think there's more to be bummed about in life then star wars.

You confuse popularity with quality.

Who's bummed out? I don't care much about anything SW-related these days other than the UOT.

Well? Are we talking about popularity or quality? i was under the impression we were talking about popularity.

I think that right now is the best time to be a SW fan in at least 5 years, maybe since 1997.  The fan restorations are the best that SW has ever looked on home video, and more is on the way.  And for the first time, there is a groundswell of discontent from the general population and a growing number of industry professionals.  I'm more hopeful than ever.

Its a mixed bag for me. I definitely miss the mid 90s period of Star Wars for me, one filled with expectations not soured by the prequels or some of the excessive darkness of the EU.

However one of the things I've grown to accept is that I can't expect a franchise to remain just perfect for me. Star Wars means a lot of things to a lot of people. Yeah I'm grateful that I grew up in a period of watching the OT, but if some kids today get a kick out of the prequel films and the Clone Wars TV show, good on them. One of the beauties about this franchise is that you'll always find something you'll like.

I mean yeah, those young fans from 84 to 91 didn't have the prequels or special editions to muddle up their love of the series, but they also didn't have the writing of the Thrawn Trilogy, some of character exploration of the X-Wing books, a unique experience of KOTOR, whimsical fun of Lego Star Wars, or the creative efforts of fan films/edits. When you look at everything, I don't think its that bad of a trade.

In spite of Lucas' best efforts the original films will survive in some form long after he's gone. Hell in 10, 20 years we might see some energetic and motivated people make their own version of the prequels. Readers will be able to enjoy the EU long after Karen Traviss will have laid down the pen. I think fans will still enjoy this franchise many decades from now, and that's something to be happy about.

Im at the point where I really dont care about SW except for the release of the OOT on bluray.  To me, everything else is crap and I ignore it.  I havnt given asshole Luca$ a penny in 4 years.

I also miss the excitement of mid 90's SW.  Back in 93", I was recovering from 2 bad years, starting a new life and I rekindled my love for SW.  SW was a great way to get my mind off the past and I enjoyed the new Thrawn novels, building and painting plastic models, the super nintendo games and the PC x-wing game, and talking SW with one of my BF's who rekindled his love for SW at the same time as me.  I still have a "sci-fi universe" magazine from 93' that published the first announcement about the making of the prequal trilogy.

This may seem weird but whenever I'm feeling down, I just like to imagine that it's 1983 and Star Wars isn't available on home video yet and all I have to re live the experience is my novels and marvel comics.  Then one day my dad comes home from a flea market and gives me bootleg copies of the original trilogy that look like crap, but hey, at least I can watch them and they look better than camcorder copies.
