Feedback Wanted: Jar Jar's voice and personality re-imagined (video experiment) — Page 2

This was really well done.  I don't really think the accent is bad but made a little unrefined,, but I definitely like the idea and the dialogue and considering that this is just a test he has plenty of time to fix that.

It might help if the globe was replaced with something that looks a little less like a Gungan bomb (it makes them seem like the mutants in Beneath The Planet Of The Apes).

To be honest I don't like the look of the bombs either but I'll post more about that over on the Redux thread.

I also re-edited TPM for myself..... Gungans and Neimodians were speaking spanish in mine, and while I can suspend belief and pretend spanish is an alien language, it would be much cooler if it was english and better accents... I thought the Neimodians were equally as annoying.

I'd be willing to give you the new dialogue if you want new ideas for lines.... I'd have to dig up the DVD i burned.

Wow.  Really nice and convincing too.

Regarding the stereotype issue, one of my favorite parts of the original trilogy and other great movies is they're not overly concerned with being politically correct.  I think the voice is great.

Leia is hardly the usual damsel in distress (even in her metal bra) and the aliens in the OT aren't ethnic stereotypes of Earthly humans (with the possible exeption of Yoda who is basically every elderly martial arts master in character even if his voice is more Grover than Master Po).

The PT didn't just ignore PC it practically waved two CGI fingers up at it.

The female characters are there to either get captured or killed, aliens are either childish cartoons or something out of the a Bernard Manning routine and Threepio isn't just questionably fussy but as camp as Christmas.

Timstuff, great job. Are you going to do AOTC Jar Jar as well?

To me, the MOST grating thing about the Jar Jar character was undoubtedly the voice / histrionics (and some of the dialogue) supplied by Ahmed Best (and George Lucas).

The likes of Magnoliafan's subtitled version changed things entertainingly, but because he speaks so many times throughout TPM, it ends up a LOT of subtitles to read, and there is STILL the issue that an alternative 'alien dialogue voice' that really sounds easy on the ears would be needed if things are subtitled, considering we'd still HEAR him so much throughout.  The main advantage of this route is that any kind of totally new 'dialogue' can be given to Jar Jar....as Magnoliafan showed with his foul-mouthed version, lol!

Of course, a total 'redub' using someone else's voice ALSO means that totally new dialogue can be added if required too.  Any kind of 'accents' aside, I just wish that a DEEP-sounding voice had been given to Jar Jar in the first place.

Personally, I always wished that this main character in the first prequel had been voiced in the same kind of gruff way as the Captain Tarpals gungan was.  (But then I'd also have preferred Jar Jar's  CG character to have had the 'greenish' gungan colouring too, rather than the 'orange' they went with.)

This overly dumbed-down character truly ended up being the unwanted red-headed step-child to many unfortunately.  And even if George insisted that his most prominent CG character JUST HAD to be doing foolish schtick throughout, I reckon his 'target-audience' of young kiddies would STILL have taken to Jar Jar if he'd been made a bit more DIGNIFIED-sounding.  He would also have probably ended up a lot more tolerable to most anyone older....

Ironically, I remember when I first read that TPM was going to feature a fully-CG'd 'alien' character throughout as a MAIN cast member, thinking at the time that this would be groundbreakingly amazing , and one of the things I most looked forward to seeing in the prequel.... -  http://brianorndorf.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54ee7b642883300e553785e6b8834-500pi

I too would like to see the Gungans altered to look less clownish in colour which with a redub would make them more approachable.

It might be worth setting up a gallery thread for suggested changes in specific aliens in ROTJ and the PT.

Absolutely! Maybe they felt social politics had changed sufficiently so that Threepio could now be out and proud, rather than just a bit flamboyant.

As for ethnic stereotyping, I don't know that the PT is so much worse. There are the "black" dudes speaking jive in the cantina. And let's face it, in the OT, Chewie is treated like a smart dog (not Brian, mind) for most of it. Calling a hirsute fella a "walking carpet" is hardly PC, is it? Okay, so the PT has a greedy Jewish businessman, Japanese traders trying to take over, a black, slightly dim sidekick, a black mutha-fuckin' Jedi master who doesn't quite make it (still want to kill Lando?) and a damsel in distress who then is relegated to being a mother...

..damn, the PT really is bad.

I'd love to do fan edits / dubs of both TPM and AOTC, although I need to find time to do it and I'm planning on taking things one step at a time. I've got a big animation project that I'm working on for school so I don't have a whole lot of time to work on side projects with ATM, however it is definitely something I want to do as soon as I have some free time to do it with.

You've already proved what is possible which is a real help to the people on here who want to try and rescue what they can from the PT in regards to the character and his kin.

I'm not sure what everyone has against Jar Jar. I think he's funny. :/

Which of course you ruined.

How has this experiment spoiled what you perceive to be your enjoyment of Jar Jar?

The original version still exists, this is an interesting sketch for a variation.

That's like saying the Jimi Hendrix version of All Along The Watchtower has spoiled your appreciation of the original.

Many interpretations can exist side by side but one will always be the original.

This is something I feel is very necessary in doing.   I dont want to hear about he was funny or cool, he was a very huge distration that is an embarrasment to Star Wars.  Its not just the annoying sound of his voice, but its the annoying way he talks.  Jar-Jar should have been a Han Solo type character.  Never a pointless kids aimed fool. I sadly dont even see what Lucas was thinking in this Jar-Jar character.  He does absolutly nothing for the plot.

If alot of Gungan scenes can be taken out due to the new arranging of scenes, that will give Jar-Jar a whole new feel.  Give him a new voice and Jar-Jar will give the film the more serious feel it needs.  I dont have any idea for a voice, but something will come up.

Aim the character at kids, sell toys, make money. What's to get? :p Doesn't matter that he irritated millions of fans as long as they make the filthy lucre.

i had an idea that when jar jar is speaking to qui gon or the other humans, he should speak english with a bit of accent (that means no "mesa" or any of that crap) but when he is speaking with his kind, he can speak with the original voice (backward like mangoli fan edit)
