Please note - these are NOT my favorites
For historical references only. Not my scans - excuse the poor quality.

All taken from Polish www.starwarsy.pl website - its webmaster is a really crazy collector, with "bootleg" figures (made in countries being "behind the Iron Courtain" back then, when US merchandise was scarce), cut-outs from old magazines and newspapers... too bad you can't read his comments, these are hilarious.

I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Not necessarily. Compare with real propaganda poster.
As much as I hate this ESB poster (yes, I think it sucks, honestly), I would like to "defend" it in a way.

As I said before, the "artsy-fartsy" posters, as opposed to "hollywoodish" ones do not have to contain faces of the main cast etc. - they're often weird, to shock the potential viewer and draw his attention. Can you see Jack Nicholson in this 'Chinatown' poster? Or Dustin Hoffman here? And who is this mysterious Godfather? BTW: have you ever been to a poster exhibition in art gallery?

This ESB poster shows how sci-fi was perceived before the coming of "Star Wars". Compare this ufologist's book cover. Any flying saucers, any green/gray little men with big black eyes? It doesn't look as much "ufo-ish" as it should, right?

Such posters are made when the artist is given some (too much? ) liberty. Today we usually want the message to be unequivocal, because it has to be clear for the masses, which are ...not so bright ...err... I wanted to say: "not so sensitive to the subtle art" Commerce kills art.

Samples taken from www.theartofposter.com website, where they also offer some of those posters for sale (yes, those weird SW posters, too! )

OK, another 1980s Polish poster from the series: "I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm gonna express my artsy-fartsy feelings by painting it with my bare bum".

Sometimes uncommon or even shocking point of view may be a good thing, but IMO if you wander too far people simply will miss the message...

For people confused as to why the ESB duel is used on the ROTJ cover it's because it's from a trilogy poster that lines up to make one big poster. You get stuff like the Emperor from ROTJ on ESB and Leia from ESB on ANH. It's from the Special Edition VHS releases. Look here:

 That's truly bizarre.

An image from ESB was also used in the '83 poster, though:

The poster people had posted was the SE one. I'm assuming they used it in the 83 one as a Teaser Poster so they didn't want to give away anything. Or they were just lazy.

Actually, those were the movie posters for the 1997 re-release/Special Edition release, before they were the VHS covers. I suppose they were originally suppose to be lined up together in movies theaters, but every theater I saw them at only displayed one poster at a time, since they were released a month apart from one another.

Man, I remember how exicted I was back then to see SW in the theater again. Change didn't bother me a bit then, at the time it was merely an alternative and not "the only version". It was the Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition, which lived in harmony beside the real Star Wars Trilogy. It was when they removed the "Special Edition" and tried to pass it off as the originals that I developed a strong dislike for it.

Most likely it was because those were the only reference photos Drew Struzan had access to, or they were the ones he felt were the most aesthetically pleasing.

Even though I wasn't happy about the changes for the SE, I did like the poster art for SW and I bought 2 versions of that poster- a one sided version that I now have framed, and a 2-sided version that was meant to be put in a movie theater's litebox and illuminated from behind.

Damn you you DarkFather.

Those posters are so awesome I had to find out more about them and how I can obtain them.

Here's a link the the artists website: http://www.strongstuff.net/

The artist is certainly very stylistic and talented. Those posters went on my harddrive.

Didn't see any. He must be an exclusively ANH-ESB fan like me.

Hotrod - There isn't a ROTJ poster yet, but it's coming.

Dark Father - If you have bigger images of those posters could you post them here please.

Yeah, I checked the artist out and there is a ROTJ poster in the works.

I like the style of the posters- but it bugs me a little that he takes so much liberty with the character likenesses. The only one that's even close is Chewbacca- LOL!

Meilr, I think the style is what makes it soo cool.  Or kewl, as the kids say nowadays.

I like the overall style- I just wish that the characters resembled the actors more.

if he put enough detail into to make them look like the actors, then it would loose a lot of its character.

Those would make pretty cool DVD covers.

It wouldn't require any more detail- just a different emphasis on different features. I did a lot of projects in college - very similar to this style- only using cut pieces of construction paper (nothing more) and I was still able to make the celebrities I was portraying recognizable.

I get that he obviously wasn't trying to get the characters to look like the actors, since all the people in all of his posters kind of look similar. It's just an aesthetic thing for me, I don't really care for his technique in that way.

Just my opinion- nothing more. :-)

Me and Mielr continue to find things in common.

This is hanging in a big frame in my room right now. Beautiful poster.

ROTJ Style B is a favourite of mine because it hung my wall as a kid and I'd stare at it for hours and imagine the scenes it depicted when not watching the actual film.

Though Star Wars Style C is my all time favourite.

I have an original framed. It's older than me!

Though Style D as posted above is becoming a favourite of mine too, I'm going to have to get a reprint one day. I never really liked the Star Wars Style A poster for some reason although it's a classic.

Damn Lucasfilm for not making these images the cover art for the dvds. The GOUT nearly got it right, just backwards ;)
