"Fatal Alliance" book

I started reading the first EU novel set in the “Old Republic” MMORPG setting.

I’m glad that setting the story 40,0000 years before “Star Wars” frees the creators to be bold and original. Now that their not tied to the same characters and situations, I’m excited to see what brilliance we’ll get.

There’s this Evil Empire, and a villain is a Sith Lord with a breath mask!

There’s a shady Mandalorian with awesome battle armor!

There’s a Hutt crime lord with a palace full of weirdos!

and this is just the first 30 pages!

Go originality!

Surely it's 4,000 years- not 40,000...  doesn't this explain why it's so similar?  ;)

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

Rewrite the Prequels!

It is actually 3,650 years before Star Wars .A New Hope to those who came on the scene late, i still call it star wars.

The Jedi Mandalorean war is mentioned to have been fairly recent in the book.  I am wondering where in the timeline does the game take place.

Maybe the war mentioned in the book is not the one i am thinking of, the one where Revan and Malak fight the mandaloreans .

It would be nice for someone to make a old republic guide that fits the Veich/anderson stuff, with the first two kotor games, the kotor comic, the online comics for the old republic and the printed one, and the game so we know when all this stuff takes place.

Not sure what else will be retconned i watched one of those holorecord things and it mentioned Bastila Shan was a jedi master.  She never was in the game she was a knight without a padawan.

The book is better than that awful time travel book that came out recently, but just barely rises above tie in fiction.

Tie in fiction for an mmo, based on the film franchise.  We have yet to be told the level of canon of the Old Republic or George's involvement.  Is it regular EU or a special case like the clone wars cartoon series and the force unleashed games which are either G-canon or just below that because of Mr. Lucas involvement.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

Eh, I'm guessing it's regular EU with no input from ol' George. Though you know he's aware of it from that line he threw in the second season of the Clone Wars. =P

I didn't really catch much of the second season, what was the line?

Update! "Fatal Alliance" also contains a wisecracking cynical smuggler!

(Interestingly no mention is made of his smuggling any form of contraband. The only crime shown is blatant piracy, but the book keeps calling him a smuggler)

I watched all but two episodes, I must have missed it too.

"For generations, my ancestors fought proudly as warriors against the Jedi. Now, that woman tarnishes the very name Mandalorian. Defend her, if you will. This lightsaber was stolen from the Jedi Temple by my ancestors during the fall of the Old Republic. Since then, many Jedi have died upon its blade. Prepare yourself to join them." -- Pre Vizsla.

George himself wrote that line and after Dave Filoni read it he was suspicious about how much George knew about SWTOR. =P

I didn't know that George wrote that. Interesting.

Yeah well originally that blacksaber was supposed to be a vibroblade but after Dave explained the technology behind it George just gave him a weird look and told him no. =P

Well, I finished this book (months ago) but thought I should comment on it now for some reason.

Despite its derivative characters and settings, the final bit was actually a lot of fun, largely because I didn't know how it was going to end (ie: all the film characters survive and nothing changes, like the rest of the EU).

I'm looking forward to more in the Old Republic series.
