A warning to everyone (mostly Americans) that some may find the deleted Fantasia scenes offensive or uncomfortable, if so, please have that discussion in a separate thread, I'd like to keep this about the preservation, not the politics.

Official PC thread this way: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Fantasia-PC/topic/18222/

Major kudos BTW to poita for putting this project together!

Like Titanic said earlier, any updates on this project ?

Sorry if I sound anxious (can't help it), but is there any update on this?

(and Alice in Wonderland that was mentioned)

The scans are all done of Fantasia and Alice, just looking for anyone that wants to handle the restoration, I really do not have enough time even if I cloned myself. The files are currently in the US.

I would in a heartbeat if I had a strong enough computer. I lost my main rig, and haven't felt like building another one after losing so much. I'm glad you also have the reel to reel soundtrack. There's hope yet.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I got enough juice for basic cleanup but probably not for the real heavy stuff. :/

 Thanks for your reply.

Are the raw scans that bad that need restoration?

I mean, the raw scan of Jurassic park was by all means watchable.

And by restoration you mean artifact/dust removal and color/gamma/brightness correction?

I'd say it probably needs some kind of stabilization on top of that.

If this preservation gets completed, I’ll give every one of you a Nobel prize!! Millions will thank you for this accomplishment, for not even Disney themselves could possibly grant us such a milestone achievement!

So, does this print have the full, original Deems Taylor audio?

A print well over 60 years old is not in as good a shape as a 90s polyester print unfortunately, and that Jurassic Park print was in incredibly good shape, it was by far the cleanest release print I had ever seen. Fantasia is, as you would expect, in far, far worse shape.

Did you ever consider contacting disney about this print? I have no idea how they feel about or deal with private collectors but I have spoken to someone in their restoration department who claimed the reason they haven’t had a release with the original soundtrack is because they don’t have any good source for it. For all we know they’ve been searching for this holy grail as much as we’ve been.

No, this print is the familiar shorter cut of the film. There is no doubt in my mind that Disney has the Deems Taylor audio from that cut. I cannot conceive of any way they’d have lost it between the 1990 restoration and the 2000 restoration. What they don’t have is soundtrack for the scenes that were cut after the 1940 roadshow release, the scenes that were only reinstated to the film in 2000. That’s why they redubbed all the scenes, because if they only dubbed the new scenes, it would have been too jarring.

As I said before, the fact that Disney had to redub scenes for which audio exists just to reinstate scenes for which they didn’t have audio, shows that they should have just left those scenes out of the main film and presented them as a bonus feature, with an explicit disclaimer that they had to be dubbed because the original audio was missing. (Or at least found someone who sounded more like Deems Taylor, so they could have used the original audio for the scenes for which they had it, and the dubbed additional footage would have blended in better…)

Wow, really? Is there some sample of how bad of a shape the print is in? I’m really, really fascinated by the various versions of Fantasia and am beyond saddened that we will possibly never get to see certain versions of the movie.

Oh ok I see. I was under the impression this was the longer cut.

Cool! I hope FrankT will do running commentary on his procedure of what the particular processes do and how well they do it. With lots and lots example pictures and before/after comparisons! 😃

. . . and I wonder how the scan/restoration looks/will-look compared to this cell displayed the Star Phoenix Art Gallery: Disney (1940) Fantasia - Original Vintage Production Art of Otika¹ and an un-named centaurette:

¹ There are 3 differently drawn, dark centarettes; in order of appearance they are "Otika", Sunflower, Atika; only Sunflower and Atika are identified by name in the Disney script; "Otika" may be a mis-spelling of Atika (courtesy Disney-Wiki) with "Otika" un-named in the actual production. I hope he gets insanely drunk and records a commentary for the finished product.

In that case, he should bring enough for all …

Alright, I admit it. I am in way over my head; I need more hands with more capable machines than my own. I can’t do this alone!

What do you need? Or more specifically, what do I need to be able to help? I’m gearing up for my Starchaser 3D project so I should be good on the hardware side of things.

Well I need some renderers and some proofreaders. An extra dirt-cleaner or two would speed things up as well.
