Fantasia early 90s 35mm print on ebay. Would anyone want to donate?

This is an amazing find! A seemingly good and clean copy of the early 90s transfer of Fantasia in 35mm! Basically like the one that’s in the library of congress.

All available 35mm scans of Fantasia are old and rough looking. But this one is relatively new and based on the screenshots looks clean.

As you see it towers 10K. If money can be pooled to save this for future scanning and preservation that would be a good start.

Who is interested?

Guys, if it wasn’t clear - Class316 and I really want to make this our next Fantasia release!
We brought you already three great looking and authentic versions of this classic.
You can be sure that if you get us all the donations we need (which is quite a lot) to buy and scan it, you’ll see a 35mm scan of Fantasia in spectacular condition and quality!

This is absolutely not worth it, 13k for a film print is insane. Only place that gets anywhere near that amount of money is thestarwarstrilogy forum and even then this is a ludicrous price.

Got any ideas where we could get a 35mm print for a more affordable price? From what I can tell it’s pretty rare to see something like that for sale

Has a print like that ever surfaced? To my knowledge no. Making it rare.

Out of curiosity what would you consider to be reasonable for something like that? Maybe the seller would accept a 5K offer if that is reasonable? I don’t know much about purchasing prints like that. So enlighten us.

Its kinda hard to pinpoint a fair price, it ultimately depends on how the seller feels about the film. Clearly they think very highly of the print since it’s much more expensive than anything else listed. If you do try and put an offer in don’t mention you want to get it scanned, lots of old-heads will just ignore you. I personally don’t know how people have made these kinds of connections but I think it’s worth trying stuff like FB groups to see if someone is willing to rent out a print to you.

I mean, even if you did pay such an outrageous premium for that print, you still have to consider the cost of shipping it to a scanning facility for either a scan in 4K or an overscan in 5K+, the hard drive(s) needed to house the footage, having it shipped back, and you’ll need a computer with enough processing power and drive speeds to render the uncompressed, color corrected footage at a reasonable rate. Otherwise, you’re working from more compressed proxy videos to save on rendering time, which may carry visible pixelation after grading the footage. Shipping, scanning, and hard drives alone will bloat project costs by an extra $3K, give or take.

With $13K, you could go through this entire process about two or three times, depending on which facility you go with. Absolutely not worth the money. The 1990 release has shown up on eBay before, and it most likely will again for a much more reasonable price.
