Fantasia 1982 Soundmix — Page 2

I'll have to give it a more careful listen later tonight. Vimeo always seems to sound lower than youtube on my pc speakers, so I patch into my HT sometimes to hear it better.

Watching it with the laptop patched into my HT in Pro Logic, and they sound fine to me!

I noticed Deems' voice seems to be slightly spread across the front channels, while Corey's is dead center. I attribute this to the differences in the way their voices were recorded and mixed.

I'm starting to see why the Taylor segments were trimmed in later versions, he practically gives away the Sorcerer's Apprentice plot in the "restored" portion!

It's funny how 35 years later, I remember a little kid in the theater yelling out "Bye Mickey!" after he shakes hands with Stokowski.

My solution was to cut the footage to the 1991 soundmix, but that's a whole nother Vaseline covered obstacle to climb.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Here's the newest effort: https://vimeo.com/45556130

I should have this finished (hopefully) in the next few weeks. What I would really like from everyone is to make sure that the videos are the best they can be - synch issues, weird edits, etc. Really get your analysis glasses on for this!  :)

It looks and sounds fine to me.

One minor quibble, isn't there a sound effect with the big doors breaking at the end? I haven't watched my LD in a long time, but I remember it.

I totally understand if it's impossible to extract that sound effect sans original orchestra though.

Any updates on this? Just wondering...

Yes, still working on this, it is just slow going... I did all the easy parts first, so now I am working on the fairly difficult portions - specifically the Beethoven 5th and the Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria. IIRC, that is all I have left, but I still need to do a run-through/WP to test everything to make sure it all works the way it should. It is odd because both of those pieces had parts cut out of them for the CD soundtrack - portions that are/should be present in the movie! :S

I will need the help of the forum when it comes time to create the file - I'm sort of a noob when it comes to that, and would like to save it with the best quality but a decent sized file. Any suggestions as to file format and compression I should use?

I didn't know any of the soundtrack had any edits. Odd, since you'd think there was plenty of room on a 2 cd set.

Are there other modern recordings you can use to patch the missing bits?

Possibly, I hadn't thought of that. I was just going to jump to the original soundtrack when the Kostal one cuts out (if I couldn't salvage a bit from later on in the track) but a modern replacement might be OK, too. Anyone know what orchestra was used? I could try to find a recording done by that orchestra...

There is a severe edit of about 15 measures during the "Awakening of Happy Feelings Upon Entering the Countryside" movement of the Pastoral symphony (possibly scenes with Sunflower) on the Kostal CD. I know what you mean - 2 CDs and they couldn't fit everything? Maybe that's why the Disney corp. didn't release it as an alternate soundtrack. Also, the Night on Bald Mountain section speeds up. A lot. I'm really struggling working with it to try to make it not so noticeable. I don't know if they listened to the old soundtrack while making the new one, or just watched the film while making the new one. If anyone knows, that would help me quite a bit (and would explain a few things, too).

As vinyl was still dominant when this was released, they may have made edits to fit the records. Expanded for CD scores were still a long way off.

I don't know if it would help or not but I thought I'd post it just in case.

Hi, any way to find a good tranfer of Fantasia with the Sunflower parts back in ?

As I understand, there seems to be something existing on it that we can get our hands on.

Thanks to let me know

There is a black and white version of WWOC that has the scene unedited. Otherwise, pre-1991 releases (and even then would be a bit cropped) are all there is as far as that goes...

I think there was a color version of that episode on Ebay a couple years back.

I've seen Super 8 reels of the whole Pastoral sequence on Ebay, but no way to know if they're unedited.

Well that's the real trick, isn't it.

It's kind of a shame that Disney won't release the unedited version (they did release Education for Death, after all) - but the trick with any reel of film is whether it has the unedited version intact. I know of one unscrupulous seller that when asked if it was unedited, replied "yes," and when the buyer received it, found that it had been cropped, and the seller said he meant that "the scene hadn't been cut altogether." Not cool.

The Pastoral Symphony Uncut

Uploaded on Nov 25, 2010
The best quality copy of the fully uncut coy of Fantasia's infamous Pastoral Symphony segment. This has been censored since 1969 by violently cropping the offending scenes so the little black centaur(whose name is Sunflower btw) can't be seen.

These may not be useful for putting in a restoration, but they may help for determining "original" content, timing, and such.
They come and go, so keep checking back for returns and new ones.

That's it! Wow, I'm surprised you were able to find it. It's better than nothing, as far as an original release reconstruction would go, but it had already been cut, IIRC, by 1982 (The imagined date of this reconstruction).

Next objective, getting an unfaded film copy pre-1969 of the full movie or the tv special. I know it's extremely difficult to come by, but not impossible. In worst case, we can use the youtube video as model, existing images/cells and ask to all the artists on this forum to to help us recreate what's missing  and add it seamlessly to the film in hd. Hard team work, yes. But very much possible to do.

Forget super 8 format. these are no way good format to base on, since the all date post 60s for market.

Not to mention the fact that it probably only has like 2 minutes of the Pastoral - full running time for 400ft of Super 8 is very low...
