Very sad news.....

It is with a sad heart I announce that fanedit.org will be going on hiatus for a while.
Due to recent legal actions it was in the best interest of the owner and admins of fanedit.org to remove the site.
We will begin creating a new site as soon as possible for all fanediting fans. Thank you.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

If Lucasfilm did send them a Cease and Desist order....then he's a real fucking prick. I mean, it's not like the site was giving away free copies of his movies. What legal right did he have, anyway? With that logic, then he should shut this site down to, as it talks about Star Wars. Jeez...

Well, legally I'd say Lucasfilm had a case. FanEdits aren't meant to be distributed to those who don't own a copy of the original film, but there's no way to enforce that.

It's still a massively jerktastic thing to do, though. These are fans, mostly of the honest variety, mostly who already own all six movies on DVD (and probably American Graffiti and THX as well) and want to express their fandom by improving on the flaws they see in Lucas' films. Shooting down fandom is bad for business, is it not?

Lord knows I've given DC Comics about a million dollars since I got into their universe through fanfiction.

FE.org had direct links to fan edit downloads, didn't it? Hmmm, I wonder if that had anything to do with it....

Don't kid yourself Zion. This sites policy about not posting direct links, but feel free to talk about direct links, is just weird. The only difference between this place and FE.org is the existence of links. "Go to Demonoid and search on this, it'll be the first hit" is really no different from posting a direct link. To think otherwise is wishful thinking.

If you really wanted to be in the clear, you wouldn't allow any discussion of links period ala TFN.

Apparently the direct links didn't have anything to do with it. LucasArts asked for all links and discussion to end. They seem to think it's something it's not. Something about an original Clones movie.

Not to take away from Daveytod's work, but exactly how many copies of this fan edit were ever downloaded? A few hundred? more ? less? What pencil pushing bean counter at LF decided that "The Clones Revealed" was a big enough threat to their empire that they had to flex their muscle like this.....idiots.

It's on usenet. Whether the torrents and rapidshare links are removed or not is irrelevant. It's out and will be available for at least the next 60 days.

I feel for daveytod right now... he put all that work into it, and then LucasFilm basically just says "fuck you you ruined our film by showing them how we made it." At least that's all they took.

Think of it THIS way: your product was good enough that Lucasfilm thought it could get confused with an official product.

That, and Lucas only cares about the PT - otherwise he would've gotten RTJ and BE off too.

As others have said, daveytod should be proud that he got a C&D from LFL. They probably did watch it and realized how professional it looked. I haven't had a chance to watch the whole thing yet, but it looks damn good to me.
