Crow: Devil’s Night - HanShotFirst

Problematic edit for me.
Seemed more a reduction of the original dark color scheme to pure black and white.

Video - I found the majority of this way too black. Details were often lost in the shadows.
The crow often disappeared while flying, the equivalent of the golf ball against white clouds.
A touch of brightening might have helped. During color flashback sequences, details and clarity returned.

Audio - From time to time, I thought I noticed sync issues. Reference 33" region. Lips seemed to lag words.
This was when I played the 4 GB mp4 version straight from an external HD into the USB port of a BluRay.
When I viewed the same through the computer, everything was fine. Could be my set-up, or a glitch owing to USB conversion.

Opening with Brandon Lee was a poignant touch, and a clear statement of what HanShot had in mind. Also much closer to the original series of comics by James O’Barr.

Waterworld: Ulysses Cut - Zaaacharias

Highly anticipated back in its day, Waterworld proved disappointing for many. Overlong, poorly directed, oft times a soggy mess, it was, nevertheless, embraced by fans for action sequences straight out of the Mad Max world.
The extended Laserdisc, and subsequent DVD, promising a more satisfying experience, but instead the LD gave the PG rated ABC televised edit. Nudity, profanity, and gory violence excised.
Zaaacharias returned all “adult” content to the extended version giving the - for now - defacto version of Costner’s movie.

Video - Nice work here integrating the extended footage into the theatrical release. Saturation is a bit less than the LD, but the editing is solid and first rate. On the list of changes, a link shows comparison shots. Nice touch.

Audio - As mentioned elsewhere. This is 5.0, rather than 5.1 sound. There is no LFE mix. Not a problem as Zaaacharias was upfront about this. Audio editing was top notch. I popped on headphones for several sequences and did not hear any errors or poor transitions.
One thing I did note - and this is not exactly audio, but related - were the subtitles. Subtitles were based on the PG version. For example: “Shit” was seen as “Dang.” Just an observation.

Narrative - The additional 40 minutes will drive many in the post Michael Bay era to punch the fast forward button. Waterworld is more leisurely, more reflective, which is altogether fitting in trailing a loner across endless seas. I still had problems with scientific assumptions in the main plot. I tried to suspend such thoughts, but the notion that the Rockies, the Carpathians, the Andes, the Appalachian range, were all submerged? No.

Enjoyment - Mixed here. Ulysses edit was more fix than edit to my eyes. There were still way too many stupidly, annoying characters. True, a couple years after the apocalypse, few will debate Film Noir vs Pre-Code, sip Merlot, and listen to Dave Brubeck. The dialogue lurched between inventive and cringingly butt dumb.
The whole film seemed suffused with over-acting. Understandable in “Deacon” who preached to his rabble. Pointless with most others. The small girl, Enola, was particularly shrill. For her, and all others, I credit ham handed direction - both Reynolds and Costner.

There is more to appreciate here, to revel in, than to belabor what coulda / shoulda been. As an extended version, trims and wholesale surgery cannot be expected. Zaaacharias has done a stellar job, and his edit is whole heartedly recommended to all Waterworld diehards.

Star Wars Return of the Jedi: Renewed

I came upon this Fanedit by accident, and was one the rare times I did not know what to expect. The edit was created by IlFanEditore. Without hesitation I can say it’s worth a watch, right from the beginning the changes are obvious, or at least obvious to anyone who has watch ROTJ a thousand times 😃, and it does affect the way the movie is paced compared to Lucasfilms editions. There were occasions, mainly on Tatooine, that it felt the pace was too fast and much of the tension was not as effective as I’m used too.
Enhanced special effects can be seen throughout the movie, most were very impressive. Though I did spot one or two effects that seem to suffer from feathering issues and, at least in one instance, the cut out was not as good as it needed to be. But otherwise the effects were really well done.
Where this fanedit shines the most is in the ending. IlFanEditore really nailed it, an improvement on anything I’ve seen previously. Overall the movie has more of a serious tone and feels more in line with The Empire Strikes Back.
So definitely a fanedit that has been welldone, and nicely sits along with Adywan’s Revisted fanedits.

Clone Wars: Episode I: Army Of The Republic - smudger9

Intelligent condensation of the heavily padded animated series. smudger9 wisely cut the juvenile elements, as well as Jabba’s kid, choosing to focus on Domino squad. I didn’t understand what he was doing initially, but it makes sense as the edit progresses.

Video - Good cutting throughout as the narrative weaves between Jedis Obi-Wan and Anakin, and the Domino squad, skitters to Greivous and the delicious Asajj Ventress.
Blacks are solid throughout and there are no problems around flares, bursts, explosions, etc …
Some of the edits seemed quick but never too noticeable.

2.0 stereo. No subs, though the dialogue was clear and understandable. That includes droid-speak and garbled mutterings of Admiral Trench.

The narrative suffers unavoidable problems, I’m afraid. smudger9 has shaved chunks of time, so there is a loss of cohesion. Despite re-arranging, there is a “jumpy” feel to the story. Character arrivals and departures are abrupt. (The same could be said for the Lucas originals and live action.) Clone 99’s story was nicely done, yet the subject of a spy onboard Resolute was broached and forgotten.

smudger9 has removed all the lame sections for us. Despite above-mentioned quibbles, this edit holds together well and is enjoyable from start to finish. His version is more battle action heavy, less character study. Yet it is also Clone Wars, so what do you expect? Anyone who does not have a problem with the animated series in general will have a blast with this.

Pulse: The Forbidden Room (Pulse – Kairo) - den_nado

Filesize = 1.8 GB, Video = 1920 X 1080p AVC, Audio = 253 kbps AAC, 2-Channel stereo. Hard subbed.

Although this is a “light edit” the cuts are well thought out, serving to enhance the storyline, heighten the uncanny atmosphere, and leave the viewer with a sense of unresolved unease.
For the uninitiated, even with trims, Pulse is never action paced. This is a moody, at times cerebral journey.
A tale of emptying cities, empty lives, the emptiness of existence.
When this was released in 2001 the internet was an exciting new frontier, part Wild West, part beckoning Utopia. Not the beguiling Janus of today.
As Harue explains to one, the internet is supposed to connect us with others; instead it is more isolating.
Along with this concept is the powerful fear of displacement.
Both themes have grown in prominence, and Pulse is eerily prescient.
The audio is 2.0, adequate and what most DVDs had. Mine was a Hong Kong R03, boasting 5.1 which was magnificent, particularly the rear surrounds.
Despite that comment, this is an excellent edit and fans of J-horror ought to hunt this down.

War Of The Stars: A New Hope Grindhoused (Star Wars) - TMBTM

Nifty reworking of a classic viewed numerous. Edit incorporates plenty of ugly, deleted footage, making the experience greasier and dirtier. No disrespect intended. This is a snickering subversive retelling that takes its sweet time before slithering into broken territory.

The outtakes were all crappy, poor resolutions and bleached colors. Editor TMBTM matched the look across the edit, so there was no jarring issues. The editor is utterly professional, transitions and edits were smooth and well-thought out.

2 Channel stereo, no subs (yet R2D2 is subbed throughout, and it proves to be one smart ass astrodroid).
I wondered about reinserted footage of storm troops on Tatooine. If redubbed, clever dialogue of poorly motivated workforce. The old saw about good help being hard to find applies.

This is an altogether deceptive story that feints like an extended version, but midway begins to weave into a different direction.
I can reassure uncertain readers that the modifications progress logically and bloom in the second installment.

A lot of this is funny as hell. Storm troopers, who cannot shoot for shit in the original trilogy (Jango must have been rolling in his grave over nth generation clones) in this edit blast resistance left and right. Jawa haters, check this out. As noted, R2D2 sees all, chatters away, but no one pays attention to him. Probably because he talks too much. A generous assortment of bonus goodies here, and you can’t beat Frances Gall (thank you for not going with the obvious ”Chick Habit”).
There may be purists who hate tinkering with this installment, at canon. Forget ‘em. This is a gaspipe kick. Go for it.

Blade Runner: Version Never Seen Before - Zombie84 - Brunei1992

Filesize = 8 GB, Video = 1920 X 1080p, Audio = 126 kbps AAC, 2-Channel stereo. No subs.

Straight off, this is not Zombie84’s original DVD, but a DVDrip. There are several 480p versions out there, if your bandwidth is limited. (Note: This is a review thread, not a request thread. Search.)

Zombie84’s version is very interesting. The story is the same, but the point of view often differs, scenes play out differently, dialogue is truncated or extended. The experience takes unusual turns.

The 1982 sound is fine, dialogue clear. Subs are unnecessary, although Gaff remains indecipherable. The temp score, used in many cases, often heightens the 80’s vibe. Swings between diverting and cheesy.

Other people have quibbled in posts about video quality. For me, the image is alright. My player is 4K but my screen is an older plasma, not HD, certainly not 4K. Elsewhere, krausfadr referenced how the supplementary footage has a different bitrate. This will likely be much more evident in this older edit. Try to be forgiving as this is what Zombie84 had to work with, and what Brunei1992 ran through Topaz. I am OK with the “look” but those of you with state of the art screens should be aware of limitations.

An irritation I noticed was the film simply quit while Deckard and Rachel are driving north. No fade to black, no THE END. An incomplete DVDrip, similar to the impatient partner incapable of finishing. The last impression, and an annoyance.

Nevertheless, this is worth watching. Credit to Zombie84 for editing, to Brunei1992 for upscaling and sharing.

Demons: Awakened (Demons & Demons 2) - Mikedrew87

Nice attempt to link Demons and Demons 2 into one grisly night. Both films bear similar structure (and director), though fans seem to feel D2 is the superior film. At two hours, it is longish for grindhouse territory, but once the teeth sink into place, viewers hold on for the ride.

Demons is a dark film overall, beginning to end. D2 is book-ended brighter. At the beginning of the edit, switching between the two movies is noticeable. Distracting at times. For me, the jumps between the orignal to the sequel were often jarring, whereas transitions from D2 to D were often brilliant. As the story progressed, both narratives fell into shadow, so the cuts were not as stark. The film opened with damaged print effect, yet that disappeared. Thank you. As noted, very dark film - blacks solid.

Dubbed 2.0 stereo (same as my DVD). Never good to begin with, the sound is acceptable. Sometimes you can understand the voice actors, sometimes not. Music stays a joyful, tacky reminder of an era.

Unlike gorehounds, I prefer the original film. Fresher story was, better characters, inspired setting. D2 also had the kid, the unborn kid, goofy humor, and it was weighed down with commentary about television and viewing habits.

Nevertheless, the flow is awkward, especially in the beginning with differences between source light. Later, the edit is more entertaining. There are a lot - a lot - of characters to keep track of. In D1, you can’t predict resolutions for any, D2 is more meal-a-minute. There is a clash between suspense vs. inevitability, which is how slasher films progressed in the 80’s.
Around the 30‘ point, the twin movies locked into sequence and became really enjoyable. Demons is a must see for any true Horror fan, and Mikedrew has done a great job in slicing two into one. Grab this while you can, invite your friends, and turn off the lights.

Darth Vader’s Unstoppable Murder Rampage Across the Galaxy (numerous Star Wars) - Rhythm Rice

Filesize = 6.32 GB, Video = 1920 X 1080p. Audio = 333 kbps, 2-Channel stereo AAC. No subs.

An unstoppable action adventure of Darth’s greatest moments is closer to the bone.
Luke? Who’s Luke?
The chronology itself is pretty messy, likely to be incoherent to those unfamiliar with the saga.
Source material ranges from the Star Wars films, to Rogue One, the Obi Wan series, and edits by TMBTM.
Editing is choppy, abrupt at times. This is a franchise notorious for wipes and those are not used.
The edit is interesting throughout, since the editor is crafting a fanmix, which is more difficult than fanfix.
At times, however, it feels he tries too hard, attempting to force fit scenes into his vision.
Watchable from beginning to end, however. No child Anakin, no Jar-Jar, no political babble that bloated other films.
For fans of Darth, badass, no-nonsense Darth, this is one you’ve been looking for.

Pinkface (Timecrimes) - Neglify

From the DVD, Neglify Shorts Vol 1, and the Time Travel Consecution. Timecrimes was a Spanish film I was unfamiliar with. Reading IMDB, one realizes Neg hugged the original plot tightly while shearing away an incredible amount of time.

Video shows damage, deliberately done. I usually don’t like scratches or grain, specifically in recent films or movies I have seen because the results look sloppy and amateurish. I didn’t know this film, however, so I was completely fooled into thinking this was a cheap 1970’s production. I laughed when I realized my false assumption later. Well done.

Audio is 2 Channel AC3, 192 Kbps. One of the best/worst music tracks I have heard. Edgy, skittering violin makes one feel like they’re trapped in a room full of mosquitoes and crawly bugs. Selected music performs slight of hand distraction as it is so irritating one does not focus on jump cuts or any of the “laboratory bits.”

End of the day, I appreciated more than enjoyed this. I chuckled at the end, but I had figured out what was going on and who was what. Thankfully, this was only 13 minutes instead of the original 92 minutes.

Nevertheless, for me, this was funnier than I expected and I laughed out loud a couple of times.

The Road To Revenge (The Nightingale) - Maniac

Filesize = 9.29 GB, Video = 1920 X 1080p, Audio = 1536 kbps, 5.1 DTS. Subtitled (I’ll get to that)

Acquaintanceship with previous Maniac efforts ought to be warning enough.
In this edit, as in the original film, there is an appalling amount of violence towards women.
At 78 minutes, an hour has been shaved off.
What is astonishing is how coherent, how well the result holds together.
This is a taut thriller, a story of vengeance that turns into character studies.
As with all of this editor’s works, there is replacement music and his choices are excellent.
Subtitled throughout. Hardsubs. One cannot switch them off, and I wonder if that was a mistake or oversight.
Editing is seamless.
This is top-notch work and aspiring editors would be advised to study this one.

The Hobbit The Legendary Edit a fanedit by Wraith

The Legendary Edit indeed! I like what KeithBlk said. “Do we need another Hobbit edit?” If that refers to this edit, then yes!

I have watched so very many Hobbit edits. I went through various stages of thought. Each time one was released that I liked, I thought that it was the best. Each for a different reason. The first to really catch my attention was Spence’s edit. Cutting three movies down to an action packed thrill ride was quite a feat. Then there was the other legendary edits by Kerr, L8wrtr, Adam Dens, Dustin Lee and M4. Each had their own merits for consideration of the being the best Hobbit edit. Wraith even mentored the editor of the Battle of The Five Edits snd played a huge part in its success. It is excellent and fits a niche. Q2 and TM2YC both released their three part edits. Both were incredible. I finally settled on M4’s edit being subjectively the best Hobbit edit for my preferences.

I viewed Wraith’s previous Hobbit edits and was acutely aware of just how much work he had put into them. Especially, the one that this edit was derived from. It was very close to being what this edit has become.

This edit is the perfect Hobbit edit. I know that is subjective. I’m serious. It is the perfect first movie to The Lord of The Rings. It’s darker. It’s more serious. It’s less stupid. It’s less bloated. I’ve watched it fifteen times now in it’s various workprints and will continue to watch as the obsessive compulsive legend continues to tweak it. There are so many microcuts to improve the narrative that it boggles my mind. I know the movies so well that I catch all of them.

It’s literally unlike any other Hobbit edit and it will become most Middle Earth fans’ favorite Hobbit edit. I only hope that I am here to see it.

Wraith you have outdone yourself! This is what fanediting is all about. The transformative power of skilled editing is on full display here.

I highly recommend this edit and thank you for creating this perfect Hobbit edit for us.

Halloween - The Myers Case ( Halloween (2007); Halloween II (2009) ) - Maniac (2020)

This is a remake of an older Maniac edit, “Halloween - The Devil’s Eyes”.

Great A/V quality. The A/V editing is done at a professional level, as usual. The audio work - rescore, sound effects, audio fading etc - is superbly done. Quite a few creative editing decisions are taken to overlay different video and audio together and it works very well. The transition between the first and second films is seamless and intelligently handled.

Spoilers for Halloween (2007) below.

The edit takes the opening of Halloween (2007), renders it in black and white, and places it - as a flashback - after Myers’ prison escape. While I do think the idea of turning the opening into a flashback is a good one, so as to allow the film to begin quickly, I do think it would’ve worked better had the flashbacks been chopped up and scattered throughout the first act rather than playing out as a single long block.

Quite a lot of footage is cut - around 75 minutes overall from the two films combined. It allows for this to operate as a single long film, and streamlines the narrative. I do have a critique of this. The reason I quite like the Rob Zombie remakes is because of their characters, story, and atmosphere. They’re closer to psychological horrors than slashers. By cutting so much footage, this feels like a long series of murders, similar to the original Halloween film, and for me loses some of what make Zombie’s remakes so great. I would’ve preferred to see more of the violence cut in favour of the characterisations and conflicts, especially from the second film, rather than the other way around. However, that is just my personal preference, and this cut does work very effectively for those who preferer slashers.

Fanedit: Game of Thrones - Film V - The Cold of Death
Original: Game of Thrones: Seasons 4-5

This film-to-tv edit of Game of Thrones covers the end of Season 4 and a large part of Season 5. A/V Editing is good, additional score is added numerous times. Sometimes the audio transitions are too quick or the dialogue is drowned out by the rescore - eg at 2:27:44. But mostly good. Occasionally, the transitions feel rushed, such as during the battle beyond the Wall, but I understand this is too keep the runtime down.

The plot is essentially a heavily streamlined version of the original, there are no major divergences. Season 5 is a pretty weak season of television in my view, which makes sense since it diverges so heavily from the books, so Anjohan did not have the best base to work from. What he does is take the very strongest scenes, and also scenes that are weak but are essential to prevent plotholes, and stitches them together. The focus of this edit is placed on the strongest plotline of Season 5 - the Wall and Hardhome. Dorne is aggressively cut down to barebones, as it should be. Arya appears (material from the end of Season 4) but none of her Season 5 scenes are in this one (maybe in the next one). Sansa’s butchered storyline is made as good as it can possibly be. The S5 Meereen plot, which is very weak, is completely removed and the focus is instead on Tyrion going from King’s Landing to Meereen. The King’s Landing / Sparrow plotline is well refined. Stannis arrives at the Wall, but his conclusion I believe will be in the next film. The highlight of this film is Jon Snow’s election as Lord Commander and (mis)handling of his post, along with the battle at Hardhome. I think Brienne could’ve been cut even further after the fight with the Hound, perhaps entirely.

All in all, I’d say Anjohan makes very good choices in regards to scene selection and makes the best possible film out of the source material. Seeing edits like this makes you wonder what Game of Thrones would’ve been like had it been released in cinemas instead of on television.

Fanedit: Planet of the Apes Revision
Original: Planet of the Apes (1968); Beneath the Planet of the Apes; Escape from the Planet of the Apes; Conquest of the Planet of the Apes; Battle for the Planet of the Apes

This highly ambitious edit streamlines plot elements from the first five Planet of the Apes films into a single film running only at 1hr 14mins (excluding credits). A lot of creative decisions are made here, such as retelling large parts of the first film’s story as a flashback during Zira’s recollection of events during the third film. The second film makes appearances throughout the story, including the ending, and the events of the fourth and fifth films are aggressively jettisoned and placed into the second half of the edit. A huge number of cuts and audio editing has gone into this in order to make transitions between the films unnoticeable. Montages are frequently used effectively. Some hilarious rescoring as well.

Someone who’s not seen the films would not be able to tell from which film the footage is coming from. The plot is rapidly paced but can be followed. All in all, a very impressive endeavour that’s worth a watch for fans of the franchise.

Fanedit: Game of Thrones - Film VI - The Repentance of Sins
Original: Game of Thrones: Seasons 5-6

Spoilers ahead.

This film-to-tv edit of Game of Thrones covers a small part of Season 4 and large parts of Seasons 5 & 6. As before, good A/V Editing. A/V quality is good but there are noticeable bitrate drops during dark scenes. Audio editing and rescores are very well executed.

Many major plot points from the 5th and 6th seasons are trimmed, largely following the same events as the show.
If only Stannis’ storyline could have been saved. Perhaps an impossible task.
One major streamlining that is very well done is the speed with which we go through Daenerys’ S5 storyline + part of her S6 storyline. The Harpies seemed to drag on endlessly in the show.
Interestingly, some changes are made to Bran’s arrival to Bloodraven’s cave, which perhaps will feed into the overarching storyline that Anjohan is going for.
Arya’s entry into the House & Black of White is instant, no timewasting. Similarly, her other scenes (all from S5) are well chosen without all the boring filler the show includes.
The Sparrows’ plotline isn’t concluded - perhaps Anjohan is going for a 3 act structure for the Sparrow arc, with Tommen aligning with them falling at the end of this edit.
Leaving Jon’s resurrection for the end of this edit was a great idea, it leaves over 2 hours and plenty of events between his death and resurrection, whilst in the show he was brought back almost as soon as he was gone.

Again, Anjohan’s done a good job here and shows his editing skill. Although the later GoT seasons fall in quality, this is much much better way of watching and rewatching them compared to the originals. My preference would’ve been for more aggressive cutting of some plodding scenes and extended battle sequences.

Fanedit: Game of Thrones - Film VII - The Wars of Ice & Fire

Spoilers ahead.

This film covers a large part of S6, and ends where the show’s Season 6 ends, with major plotlines in the North, at King’s Landing, and in Slaver’s Bay wrapped up. ie what George RR Martin should’ve given us with A Dance with Dragons, but oh well. The A/V quality and editing is solid as usual, but I’ve noticed in all of the films so far drops in bitrate. One comment on audio editing: at 2:59:30 there’s a very abrupt music change. Otherwise, all good, and good rescoring again.

Comments I made whilst watching:
The Bran visions are edited so that more things are shown.
The Tower of Joy scene is re-edited to remove the Three Eyed Raven. Well done.
Yara references the dumb escape mission from S4. I guess that means Anjohan kept in that subplot. I would’ve dropped that subplot entirely, it was terrible.
Removal of the kingsmoot. It works well without the Kingsmoot. And the Kingsmoot was shockingly weak in the original, so might as well drop it.
Bronn, a sellsword, is giving tips on siege tactics. I would cut it.
Edd being Lord Commander doesn’t make any sense. They have elections, it’s like the showrunners forgot about the opening of S5. That ought to have been cut
I would’ve dropped Asha bullying Theon at Volantis or wherever they were, doesn’t add anything.
Very solid visual & audio editing of the scenes involving the Lady Crane subplot.
Delaying the reveal that Ramsay has Rickon was a smart move.
Continuity error where Arya is stabbed by the Waif is fixed.
Battle of the Bastards is still too long, it doesn’t seem like much was cut from it.
Good streamlining of the Trial sequence.

Fanedit: Game of Thrones - Film VIII - The Retribution of Queens

This film mostly focusses on the first half of Season 7, but also covers the end of Season 6 and the Hound’s storyline from Season 6. Here are some comments I wrote whilst watching:

Undead army marching being turned into a Bran vision was well done
Good editing during the scene where Jon decides not to strip the umbers and karstarks of their castles
43:55 noticable audio shift
Anjohan has remixed Melisandre’s theme during the scene of her leaving the House of the Undying. Although this thematically doesn’t make sense, it’s still a very good addition
Very good rescore when Euron makes his alliance proposal to Cersei, it sets a dark mood
Sam finds out about the dragonglass about a few minutes after arriving at Oldtown. I think that Sam’s arrival and him finding the book on Dragonglass should be separated
Cut Dany touching the sand on Dragonstone - I thought that was a good scene.
Transition between Dany’s arrival in the map room on Dragonstone to the sudden appearance of all her Westerosi allies is jarring
Bitrate drops a lot from 1:15:50 onwards
Audio glitch at 1:18:17
Good little cuts to dialogue throughout
Some audio transitions were noticeable, eg at 1:24:18, 1:29:22
Great rescores throughout, eg when Jon announces to the Northern lords he is going to Dragonstone, Jon and Petyr talking in the crypts, Jaime charging Daenerys’ dragon
Cuts Sansa’s antagonism to Jon in several cases, which makes her character less unlikeable
Good job cutting Jon assaulting Littlefinger, that was always a dumb moment, intended to satisfy the audience it seems. However, Littlefinger touching his neck shortly afterwards due to being strangled is left in.
Pace/flow of conversation at 1:38:41 is too quick
Good modification to have Daenerys herself to decide to fly to the Reach
Cut out the entire pointless Sansa/Arya drama plotline. Great change. Littlefinger’s death is still pretty dumb though (unfixable)
Bronn’s death is a very creative and well executed change. I also like having Jaime die here. These two deaths bring more weight to the attack. But the editing for Jaime’s death is clunky and not as well done as Bronn’s

I would suggest the following (personal preference):
Less of cringy Lyanna Mormont would be good
Varys monologuing about his true intentions to Daenerys seems quite out of character, I would’ve cut it
Ed Sheeran is in it for five seconds, not sure why leave him in at all
Ironborn bullying Theon is pretty illogical
I would’ve dropped Tyrion being at Daenerys’ attack on the cabin train, as it’s hard to believe and was put in to artificially bring more emotional weight to the scene

Fanedit: Shawshank - The Duality Cut

Spoilers ahead.

This edit takes the first half of The Shawshank Redemption and plays it out chronologically, up to Andy’s one month solitary confinement, whilst splicing in the second half of the film, mostly chronologically, in black and white throughout.

Very good A/V quality. Black and white scenes look good. Bitrate 12.5 mbps. Audio editing is mostly good, besides clashing scores at 07:50. Great and varied transitions, and audio editing, between scenes from the different timelines.

The new structure creates a lot more mystery as to who Andy is and why he’s in prison. The flow and pacing of the two storylines is good.

We go from Red narrating in the main timeline about “Andy kept to himself at first”, to Red’s narration in the later timeline about Andy escaping, and then back to Red continuing to narrate in the main timeline about Andy speaking after a month. Splitting Red’s main timeline narration like this here is confusing. Similar issue at 57:46.

The transition between “this place could’ve got the best of him” and Andy staring at the rope is an inspired one - although by this point we know that Andy isn’t thinking of committing suicide.

The misdirection of the viewer into thinking that Andy has killed himself for the first half an hour or so is a good choice. You find out that Andy has escaped, which lessens the tension of the first storyline; instead it’s replaced by curiosity as to how Andy got to the point of escaping. For first time viewers, this order is inferior, but a good alternate take for those who have already seen the original.

I like the choice to have Red leaving (b&w timeline) right after talking about being institutionalised (main timeline). It then cuts from “Brooks was here” (b&w) to Andy reading Brooks’ letter - excellent choice. Cutting out Brooks’ little subplot works for well for this edit, you get all the info you need from the way Daedal has structured these scenes.

The viewer is kept ignorant of why Andy is in prison and if he’s innocent up til the end, another good choice.

Personal preference: I think most or all of Red’s narration can go, at least for the black and white scenes. A lot of exposition that the audience doesn’t need to hear, and a lot of redundant info too. The narration also spoils that Andy is taking the Warden’s money and on the whole reduces the mystery around the b&w timeline.
The Warden saying “salvation lies within” and giving back the Bible could have led into the scene of the Warden opening that same Bible and reading that line.

Conclusion - this is a well executed alternate take of The Shawshank Redemption, and a good viewing for those who’ve seen it before. Daedal has strong editing ability and the edit is of professional quality.

Fanedit: The Woman on the Train

I quite liked The Girl on the Train, didn’t really understand the hate towards it. This edit takes a film I thought already was pretty good and cuts it down to focus on the most interesting character, Rachael. Narrative is now very clear with sideplots reduced, whereas the original got a little lost with its plot about halfway through. Really excellent and clean A/V editing here, top notch. One example, the scene where Rachel is in the public bathroom having a meltdown, this was intercut with another scene and rescored too, really impressive work. You wouldn’t know it was recut unless you check the original. There’s also another modified scene at 47mins, really spectacular editing here, I won’t spoil it though. These modifications would have worked very well in the original, and brought even more doubt to the viewer regarding the culprit. The rescore was well chosen throughout, and integrated with the existing soundtrack (which was already quite good), although the rescore was a little too loud at times.

If you’ve never seen The Girl on the Train, I’d honestly recommend watching this edit instead since it hides the reveal better and is more focussed.

Overall, a fantastic edit, and I liked the slightly modified ending. Well done to Zagadka & Maniac on yet another one.

Fanedit: Nocturnal Visions

Nocturnal Visions is an edit of the book story of Nocturnal Animals that incorporates scenes from the Nocturnal Animals flashbacks, from Visions, and from a couple other films, as flashbacks/nightmares/visions. Jake Gyllenhaal and Isla Fisher star here, rather than Amy Adams. u/ohhidied does a phenomenal job of constructing an expanded narrative, giving the wife more characterisation through skilful intercutting between the various scenes. As well as adding entire scenes from other films, there are also very frequent brief flashes to the other sources which really improves the edit. My only critiques are that the audio fades a little two quickly once or twice, and that a couple of the “visions” seemed slightly out of place. There’s also a brief shot where there is a black screen as Tony and the officer are backing up to find the fence, unsure if this is intentional.

This fanedit is really underrated and seemingly flew under the radar. It doesn’t hurt that the original Nocturnal Animals is a great film. I encourage anyone who’s seen Nocturnal Animals to go ahead and watch this edit, it’s incredibly impressive.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Revisited [Ultimate Edition] by Anjohan

Dark and difficult times lie ahead, indeed.

Andreas has put together a much scarier affair than the theatrical version. This is particularly evident in the graveyard. The changes to Voldemort, in particular, are really something else. I won’t elaborate as I feel this should be viewed as blindly as possible, although I reckon some of you will already know what I’m talking about.

The restructuring here is something no other GoF edit has done. It actually improves the story incredibly well to have the Yule Ball take place after the Second Task. That way, the Second and Third Tasks don’t feel like they take place mere weeks apart.

This is also the first of the Ultimate Editions to make use of select deleted scenes, all of which have been cropped and upscaled to fit the IMAX format Andreas has prepped for these new editions. The additional scenes in question add some important plot details and character moments which, I daresay, shouldn’t have been left out. This truly feels like a more complete experience!

The sound mixing is nothing short of impeccable. The SFX and ambience in certain scenes makes the environment feel more… magical. That’s all I will say on the matter.

While I can certainly point out a few things that need improving, I think I speak for everyone when I say, Andreas doesn’t disappoint! Thank you, good sir, for keeping the magic alive. And extra special thanks to Chloe of Fanedit.org for helping him through this! Well bloody done to both of you! 👏

Can’t wait for Order of the Phoenix through Deathly Hallows! I just gotta wait for Andreas to finish his GoT edits. 😄

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: Revisited [Ultimate Edition] by Anjohan

Outstanding from beginning to end! The new intro should give you an idea on what to expect. As PoA is rightfully considered the best in the series, little has been altered, save for a few nitpicks.

The new colour grade helps bring back the warmth of the first two movies, and as the story gets darker, so do the colours. What a way to compliment the mature storytelling!

Cuts are seamless throughout, and in keeping with musical continuity, Andreas brings back John Williams’ classic themes from Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets. PoA is Williams’ final contribution to the Harry Potter series and it really is a shame that his themes weren’t brought over from this point onward. God bless Andreas for remedying this in the best way possible!

Also, keep your eye out for a few clever cameos. 😉

Overall, another fantastic job by the maestro! Order of the Phoenix is next and I have a feeling it’s going to be a treat. Highly recommended for the die-hard Harry Potter fans!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Revisited [Ultimate Edition] by Anjohan

Another banger by the maestro! The rebellion begins at Hogwarts in this exciting fifth instalment in Anjohan’s “Harry Potter: Revisited” series. As Order of the Phoenix is my #1 favourite Potter movie (Deathly Hallows being the second, Half-Blood Prince third), Andreas has succeeded in making it even better by giving it the tonal shift he desires!

Audio Editing: The additional SFX and foley help enhance the overall feel of the movie and elevate the dark, foreboding tone to heights the theatrical cut wasn’t quite able to reach (despite coming close, particularly towards the end!). Musical continuity is on point, as per usual. Nicholas Hooper’s score remains mostly intact in this new edition, interspersed with some classic John Williams and traces of upcoming themes from HBP and DH, and it really works! The music is a little loud at points, but nothing too distracting. As for Voldemort… holy shit. If you thought he was frightening in GoF:R, you haven’t seen anything yet. Once you see (and hear) the Dark Lord this time, you’ll never want to go back to your regular Blu-ray again. Prepare to feel a chill through your bones.

Visual Editing: The cuts and transitions are seamless as always. The custom-made establishing shots of Azkaban, for example, are just superb. I especially love the new aerial shots of the Hogwarts Express and London Bridge in the snow. And I have no idea how Andreas was able to expertly mimic Mark Day’s editing style with the second Occlumency sequence, but he did it! Like GoF, three key deleted scenes have been restored, and Anjohan has chosen them wisely. The last two have been placed in their proper order as per the screenplay, and also to match up with Harry’s facial wounds, so bonus points for maintaining visual continuity!

If there is one change I’m feeling a bit iffy on, it would be the removal of Grawp. I was surprised to see him gone on my first viewing. Not that I mind, of course, but the scene where the Centaurs kidnap Umbridge feels a tad choppy. It’s less obvious on my second viewing, so I’ll happily let it slide.

Another nitpick is the absence of a flashback to Neville’s parents being tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange. Andreas shared a clip of that last year, which I really loved. He even expressed his lament last month at how quickly Neville’s parents’ deaths are glossed over in the theatrical cut, so it boggles me that it’s been left out of the version I saw. Right now, I can assume he’s had second thoughts about its inclusion.

Other than that, this edition is truly FANTASTIC! OotP is indeed the best edited Potter movie by far, and this will certainly be the lightest of the HP Revisited series. HBP and DH are for sure going to be extensively reworked, and for the better, and I absolutely cannot wait to see how they turn out, especially Deathly Hallows!
