I'd say that's pretty much impossible, since both these sets were made from the same telecine transfer. Although I guess the split saber problem was fixed in there somewhere...

I know there are VHS tapes in both versions, not sure how to tell them apart. By the way did you get my package DJ?

This is an ongoing debate and in many ways a subjective one. Pouring over captures from both sets, it's safe to say they both have their strengths and weaknesses.

That said, it's hard to argue against a straight Faces transfer as there doesn't seem to be one to date.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

The widescreen Faces set comes in a differently shaped box set. I had thought I remembered them being a different colour as well, but apparently not.

I own this set. I'd be willing to let you use them for captures if you want. They've been hardly viewed at all. In fact, ANH still is in the shrinkwrap. I'd be willing to lose that for the greater good here . Let me know if you're interested.

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

Here are the first four pages or so worth on ebay, though you would probably be better off taking MoveAlong up on the offer to borrow them.
They never indicate that they are the 4:3 P&S versions, but they all look like they are.

I got the original THX 1995 pan and scan tapes, and DVD transfers of the same set in widescreen that were copied from the VHS that I got at a fair.
You can tell on e-bay, if its a good picture and you can read the back, under the credits it would say:

THIS FILM HAS BEEN MODIFIED FROM ITS ORIGINAL VERSION. IT HAS BEEN FORMATTED TO FIR YOUR SCREEN

Thats how you could tell.

well i have them ALL burned and tested,i dont htink they look that bad(tested on a 62' hi-def DLP TV)but i will see what they look like on my 35' regular TV in the bedroom, they always look better on the smaller TV's for some reason, hell the 62' TV even makes some retail dvd's look like crap.

On the face of widescreen THX tapes there is a very thin strip at the top that actually says "WIDESCREEN." Also, the widescreen tapes were only sold as a set in a larger rectagular black box with Vader's face and the text "WIDESCREEN EDITION" on the front.

The "One Last Time" promo (as well as other vintage SW home video promos) can be found on my bonus discs as well as the three part Lucas interview.

Excellent, job, DJ! Now we have accurate DVD representations of both the Definitive Collection set (Dr. Gonzo) and the Faces set! Thanks!!!

This project is definitely cool, as was the Special Collection. Lucasfilm must be scared of making the money that they'd rake in by putting out a pre-SE DVD set of some kind (any kind).

Pouring over captures from both sets, it's safe to say they both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Are the differences that notable, or are they more of the subtle variety? I've heard conflicting reports that the Faces and Def. Coll. were nearly identical because of each coming from the same source, as well as being different in spite of that alleged fact.
We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

Consequently, they are my fave DJ transfer menu's by far.

I cannot wait to see them on the big screen and also get my first taste of a Faces set on DVD.

Yeah we did. I have them on VHS. And they are sitting in a cupboard because I really dislike the covers - I mean, Vader is ok, but a generic stormtrooper for Empire? Lame. And a gay photo of the inanimate Yoda puppet? Also lame. I also dislike the colour scheme. When it comes to Star Wars, it has to be the original 70s/80s art or something by drew struzan. That's no reflection on Dark Jedi though, it's not like he designed them, and it looks like he's done a great job of recreating them for DVD, which was his intention. I also like the addition on the AT-ATs and the Final duel etc. They really add something to the boring original images.

EDIT:
I just went back and re-read the post. Looks like Rik made the covers. Nice one mate.

War does not make one great.
