Okay so for those who might not know, the Reigon-1 release of EWS was digitally censored during the orgy scene with the studios going through and digitally inserting people to mask the nudity. There is about 65 seconds of this…

The European & Reigon-4 releases don’t have this censoring…HOWEVER

ALL of them do are missing the recital of the Bhagavad Gita because Warner Brothers caved to Hindu groups and removed it from all subsequent releases —> see here: EWS

However! According to IMDB & one/two Amazon.com customers, the missing piece IS on the CD soundtrack…

SO, is there anyone here that might be interested in making an edit of this using the uncensored picture from the European/etc releases, but also somehow re-incorporating the recital of the Bhagavad Gita back into the scene as well by using the audio from the CD?

I don’t have either the know-how to do this, or the Reigon-2/etc release, but I think I can get ahold of the CD sountrack & upload the audio…

Is there anyone with that might be interested in doing such a project to restore Kubrick’s last vision?

I thought the Korean version of the DVD didn't have ANY cuts at all made to it?

The Korean and Hong Kong R3 discs are uncut and NTSC. There are no commercial releases of the film with the Hindu passages in the soundtrack from what I have read.

Yes there is. It wasn't projected at 4x3. Rumor has it that WB is putting out a proper widescreen version of the uncut print soon.

Eh, rumors...

And yeah the Korean/HK version would be ideal for the video as well, though it too lacks the Bhagavad sequence in the music.

So, anyone interested in trying to tackle this one by chance?

Not confirming the rumor of anamorphic... but Episodi, a movie magazine here in Finland interviewed Jan Harlan over the phone. Ans he is making a new documentary for the NEW warner box set due next year (that being 2006). We are not talking about the "A Life in Pictures" doc, but a completely new doc. So there is a new box set but details are yet very very scetchy...

It wasn't projected in 4:3 because most movie theaters can't do it anymore (or so I've been told). Kubrick shot this composed for 4:3. Not to say he didn't pay attention to the widescreen version, but Eyes Wide Shut (and, for the record Full Metal Jacket and The Shining) were all filmed and intended to be scene in 4:3. Widescreening would cut off half the movie.

Yeah i've read that, but no one i've talked to elsewhere online can confirm that; IMDB states that it doesn't have it either.
So really, I think that the only way to obtain a proper version would be to try & make what i'm proposing here a reality.

It has now been confirmed on the basis of his storyboards that he composed for 1.85 (as one would expect) and protected for 4:3.

If possible lossless audio would be preferable for the track.
I have a uncensored version of the film in Divx/Xvid (not sure of the exact codec). If there isn't anyone who has the DVD, frames from my files could at least be used as place holders until a DVD is acquired.

On another note, I've read that the Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing section is edited on all DVDs:
In the lengthy shot where Nicole Kidman dances naked in front of a mirror to Chris Isaak's "Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing," the second half of the shot, once Tom Cruise walks over, has been zoomed considerably for the DVD. The first half is as it was shown in theaters, with rear nudity from Kidman, but seconds before Cruise enters the frame, the image starts to zoom up and in rapidly, so that when Cruise enters, only a section from his elbow up is visible. In the theatrical version and the original unrated trailer, when Cruise enters, the frame goes well below his navel. - from the IMDb
Does anyone have the unrated trailer; or even better, some manner of bootleg of the theatrical version (which would be useful for syncing up the altered music as well) which could be used to recover this footage?

It would also be nice to restore the “We made love” line (does anyone know if Kubrick was responsible for this change?):
In the DVD/Video version, when Nicole Kidman gives her monologue about yearning for the Naval Officer, she mouths the words "We made love." But the words "You and I made love," are heard. This was done to clear up the confusion about whom she actually made love to. - from the IMDb

Also, if anyone does have a theatrical bootleg, the shower stall thing would make an interesting DVD extra, (or possibly it should be put back into the film; does anyone know if Kubrick wanted this change?):

I ripped it at 320 kbps with the highest quality setting for VBR on as well...should I re-rip it with Apple Losesless?

Yeah I don't know if this kind of shot (or the others really) are possible to recover unless someone has some pretty good insider knowledge, but it's a good thought anyways.

Sure, I'll dig it out sometime in the next few days. I'll probably just make a direct stream copy of the pertinent section and send that to you. There shouldn't be any further quality loss, and hopefully we'll find someone with a full DVD anyway.

I'm not really sure if they are possible to recover either, but I thought it best to at least see what people had available. Is the unrated theatrical trailer on the Region-1? I know that there is a theatrical trailer on there, but I don't know if it's the unrated one.

How do you recommend I go about ripping the AC3 from it then? I have DVDShrink, DVD Decrypter, SmartRipper, DVDAuthorGUI, VirtualDubMod, & Nero, but I don't really know of a way to go about ripping it using any of those programs...do you have one in mind?

I think that due to copy protection, you would have to rip it with DVD Decrypter and then use VirtualDubMod to Demux the audio, which can be done from the stream list. There is probably an easier way to do it that I'm not aware of.

Just 'bumping' this ancient thread to mention that I have the Hong Kong release, Region 3, unedited DVD-9 version of 'Eyes Wide Shut.' Product code: "Standard NA18085"

I understood from reading some web site (can't find it just now) that my version has the excised Hindu chanting or whatever. But I haven't checked that yet. I can check for that, or help in some other way.

Also: the movie was shot in 4:3 by Kubrick, and that was his expressed preference for home video viewing. He allowed it to be presented in 1.85:1 in theatres, yes (with some of the bottom/top of the full frame matted out). There will be no "widescreen" video release of this film. Likewise for a few other Kubrick movies, as mentioned above. I would expect that Kubrick's expressed preference on this question will be honoured by Warner video.

Uh....Warners has already released Full Metal Jacket on HD-DVD in 1.78:1. They have also revealed plans to release special editions of The Shining, A Clockwork Orange and Eyes Wide Shut (probably uncut) in 1.78 as well.

Now, that's just wrong to go against the director's wishes and change the aspect ratio he intended the film to be in: all for the sake of "WIDESCREEN!!!!" (ooo..so much better!).

Are distributors now going to crop every film prior to 1955's the Robe and make sure everything is WIDESCREEN!!!!!

Stanley Kubrick shot all of his films after Killer's Kiss for widescreen. He only asked for them to be shown unmatted when possible on the old laserdisc masters he approved back in 1991-1992. He died before having a chance to approve new transfers made for the 16x9 format. The decision to go open matte had more to do with wanting to use available image instead of letterbox bars since it wasted a lot of resolution. He protected his films for either ratio, so it was a smart move. Now that we have anamorphic widescreen, it's a moot point.

Here's how his films should be shown:

Killer's Kiss - 1.33:1
The Killing - 1.75:1
Paths of Glory - 1.75:1
Spartacus - 2.20:1 (70mm prints, preferable) or 2.35:1 (35mm scope prints, which is fine too)
Lolita - 1.66:1
Dr. Strangelove - 1.66:1
2001: A Space Odyssey - 2.20:1 (obviously)
A Clockwork Orange - 1.66:1
Barry Lyndon - 1.66:1
The Shining - 1.85:1
Full Metal Jacket - 1.85:1
Eyes Wide Shut - 1.85:1

Also, the new DVDs for The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut will be 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. Eyes Wide Shut will be uncut. A Clockwork Orange will be 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen.

Whoops. That was a brain fart saying Clockwork would be in 1.78. Warners did specifically mention 1.78 for the others though. But the difference between it and 1.85 are fairly negligible.
