While I'm sure Lucas can claim a good bit of the blame for adding to the mess, I think it all comes back to the writers themselves. Some of them just created extremely outrageous plots and technology(the whole Callista fiasco and the Galaxy Gun come to mind).



I'm a bit clueless here: What is the Galaxy Gun and what was outrageous about Callista's fiasco?

Well Callista was imprisoned in a computer controlled imperial ship that went around collecting force sensitives and jedi, she died and her spirit took over some random teenage Jedi student and Luke was still in love with her.

It was another Imperial superweapon created by the reborn clone emporer, it was a big tube that could fire large projectiles that could destroy an entire planet.

R2D2 got it to crash into the another one of theclone emporer's Eclipse star destroyer(Mark II or something).

That's close, but not quite there.

The Imperial ship was to pick up Imperial troops from specific planets, then indoctrinate them to hate Jedi so the ship and the troops could attack one of the last jedi outposts. When Callista got to the ship and into its computer, she delayed the mission.
After years, the troops died or left, and when the ship finally tried to execute its mission, it picked up any random sentient life that was nearby it when it reached a planet, including Gamorreans, Jawas, Luke and others.

Yeah, I guess you're more correct than I would be considering that was one of the few books I have forced myself not to read.
