Ever After 1998 - open-matte widescreen?

Hey, new user here with a slightly more obscure title. As far as I can tell, the theatrical release of Ever After was in anamorphic widescreen 2.35:1, and the current BluRay and streaming releases match that. However, my wife insists that the version we have is “cut off” the top and bottom.

I’ve confirmed (from an archive.org upload of the opening credits) that the VHS release appears to be in fullscreen 4:3 with extra material at the top and bottom of the frame.

VHS

I’m currently sourcing a DVD which also has this aspect ratio represented.

DVD notes

My suspicion is that the Netflix version simply zoomed in a 4:3 release to fit a 16:9 aspect. However since it’s no longer streaming on that platform I’m unable to verify.

Basically I’m wondering if anyone has more details about this release and/or may be able to help me source an 1080p or 4k open-matte version.

I don’t know about alternate versions. But the film was shot in super 35 if you are talking about the Drew Barrymore movie.

A super 35mm film can have the matte opened up. Sometimes tv versions do this.

I do have what’s probably an HBO recording of this movie that uses the open-matte version. My copy unfortunately starts during the opening credits and cuts off in the closing credits though. The recording is also on VHS, so there are definitely some visual glitches here and there.

Is that something you’d be interested in?

Why hello there fellow internet user!

If you’re in the US, Fandango now has a HD OM version to rent/own that is literally the old DVD master opened up to 1.78. Starz and Cinemax occasionally run a 1.78 HD version of the BD transfer, but this one is heavily cropped in certain shots while showing lots more than the other 1.78 master in others.
