Episodes 7,8,9?

OK there was the Rolling Stone interview years ago that said he'd do 3 before and 3 after. For a number of years I thought boht were lies as neither surfaced. Then we got the PT (and I am not sure I want them, though magnolia did an awesome job correcting much wrong). Well, I came across this on a thread...

Here we go,... Dark Horizons posted earlier this week that there is talk that there is preliminary movement on another trilogy in the Star Wars saga. Dark Horizons posted that the new trilogy would be Episode 7 ,8 and 9 and that Steven Spielberg would take over the Directorial duties and that George would continue to write. We do know that Steven has mentioned plenty times in the past that he would love direct a Star Wars film. So a lot of this is not too far off base of previous reports. But this is not exactly what I have been told. This is what I have so far, Star Wars will continue but not necessarily on the big screen, maybe TV and it most likely will not be Episodes 7,8 and 9. Steven will take charge but there is good possibilities that we will see 1000 years before the Skywalkers. Can we say Golden Age of the Sith??!! Once again nothing is final until we here it from the horses mouth. So stay tune!!

And yes damnit this is a rumor and no I didn't write it. So no flames. Just curious to what you're thoughts are and if you've heard anything about this. Ihave heard a number of grumblings about a TV show, hmm, that could be bad...real bad.

I've heard a number of rumors about a sequel trilogy, but my take on it is that if Spielberg and Lucas can't get Indiana Jones 4 off the ground, what chance have they of getting a new Star Wars Trilogy off the ground?

That's true I heard years ago about them supposedly starting on IJ-IV and there was even a script circulating about 3 years ago. It could be more fanboy stuff that we'll get 7,8,9 though GL started it so, hey, its worth asking.

Yeah, I think it's just fanboy fantasizing. They all think because Lucas was suddenly willing to do the PT that he would want to do an ST (Sequel Trilogy). I don't see it happening. Especially after all the flaming that Lucas has been getting on the PT. But, then again, when has he cared what fans think?

I think we had a thread about this a while ago and we were talking about how far in the future he would have to go to avoid showing andy of his OT characters in the ST. There's no way he could have any of the human characters from the OT in there for several reasons. 1) Fans would bash it more than they bashed Jar Jar, 2) They're too old unless they time the script that way, and 3) I doubt any of them would come back. If Harrison Ford wanted Lucas to kill him off in ROTJ, what are the odds that he would want to do a new trilogy? Carrie Fisher is happier behind the camera as a script doctor even though she does do a very occasional appearance on screen (Jay and Silent Bob is the most recent I can think of). Mark Hamill won't show his face on screen unless he has a beard (Comic Book: The Movie) or makeup (Jay and Silent Bob), otherwise he's just a voice for movies/TV (Batman) and video games (Wing Commander) due to his skin graft scars showing. Okay, Billy Dee Williams might do it just because he has no other discernable Hollywood life (most recent was in Undercover Brother - while I like the movie, his role could have been done by anyone).

Just my two Lincolns.

I think the whole ST thing-a-me-jig got rolling after job adverts were found online for artists at ILM.

Can't remember where the site is but I do remember it was basically a way for digital studios to advertise online.

The layout basically stated what the job entailed & what kind of movies you'd be working on.

1st few said "working on movies such as Shrek 2"

& this was even before an official announcement about Shrek 2 had been made.

Under the ILM description it said "working on movies such as Star Wars episodes 7-9"

Hmm, that is interesting DJD...the GL speculation circus continues.

BTW, I really like Billy Dee Williams as Lester in the Ladies Man, now that's a funny movie.

Well, if episodes 7-9 are made then (If I remember what GL has said in the past) the only characters that show up in all 9 episodes are the Droids, so then we won't have to worry about Han, Luke and Leia being too old. I don't recall when the next three were supposed to take place (how many years after Jedi) but since the Droids are the only characters in all nine, I'd assume that it's at least ten years or so. Which would make perfect sense. By that time the Empire could have been totally defeated and the Republic has been restored. Of course, this is all specualtion. Also GL has stated that 7-9 are even more political that 1-3 and therefore probably wouldn't be very interesting to the general audience.

Oh yay. I can't wait. (do note the sarcasm dripping from those statements)

While not necessarily in the near future, I definitely think there will be more SW movies at some point. There's too many possibilities left (and opportunities to cash in) for Lucas or anyone else to just leave it alone.

I've done much research on this subject. My conclusion: There will be no episodes 7-9. The story is over. It begins with TPM and ends with ROTJ. According to Lucas these movies are about the fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker. There's no more story to tell.

It's true that 9 episodes were once planned. Heck, at one time it was 12 episodes. But Lucas has decided that 6 would suffice. Let's look at the evolution of this story.

In 1978 the second issue of the fan club newsletters states:

"On February 23rd, it was announced that Star Wars Corporation will begin production on the sequel to Star Wars this summer. The title has not been selected yet, but will not be Star Wars II. George Lucas' company, Lucasfilm Limited, will finance the production, currently budgeted for 10 million dollars, with Twentieth Century-Fox acting as distributors. Based on the second of twelve stories in George Lucas's Adventures of Luke Skywalker series..."

The Spring 1980 issue of the fan club newsletter now called Bantha Tracks states:

"BT: At one point there were going to be twelve Star Wars films.

GL: I cut that number down to nine because the other three were tangential to the saga. Star Wars was the fourth story in the saga and was to have been called, "Star Wars, Episode Four: A New Hope." But I decided people wouldn't understand the numbering system so we dropped it. For Empire, though we're putting back the number and will call it Episode Five: The Empire Strikes Back. After the third film in this trilogy we'll go back and make the first trilogy, which deals with the young Ben Kenobi and the young Darth Vader.

BT: What is the third trilogy about?

GL: It deals with the character that survives Star Wars III and his
adventures."

Newsweek May 19, 1980:

"Viewers may be in for a surprise when the credits announce 'Star Wars, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.' Episode 'FIVE?' Have we slipped into a time warp? Actually, what we are getting is the second act of the middle trilogy of a projected nine-film cycle. The first 'Star Wars' will be retitled 'Episode IV: A New Hope,' and the next sequel, projected for 1983, will resolve all the dangling threads of the Luke Skywalker saga."

Time May 19, 1980:

"Lucas has begun his space saga in the middle, and both pictures are the centerpieces of a projected nine-part series. The remaining movies, fore and aft, have not yet been laid out in detail, but Lucas has the framework, a kind of history of what happened in that galaxy long ago and far away." "The last three episodes involve the rebuilding of the republic. Only two of the main characters will appear in all nine films, and they are the robots, Artoo Detoo and See Threepio. Says Lucas: "In effect, the story will be told through their eyes."

Time May 23, 1983

"The sequels, the three movies that would follow Jedi, are considerably vaguer. Their main theme will be the necessity for moral choices and the wisdom needed to distinguish right from wrong. Luke, who will then be the age Obi-Wan Kenobi is now, some place in his 60's, will reappear, and so will his friends, assuming the creator decides to carry the epic further."

In the 1995 reprint of the ESB novel Lucas states:

"From the onset I conceived Star Wars as a series of six films, or two trilogies."

I could go on and on, but I won't.

maybe he changed it to 6 in that interview to cover his ass in case the PT sucked ass??

hahahahahahahahahahaha

Well iv said it before & I'll say it again...

his back catalogue of movies is not very impressive, most of the projects .....stinkers.......as soon as he's skint again we'll see a rerelease of the OT (either at cinema or on dvd) & then new Star wars films once he's got a bit of spare dough knocking about

I've come to the conclusion that Lucas has a memory disorder. It's the only thing that seems to me to explain his constantly shifting stories. 12 films, 9 films, 6 films, it was always going to be six films, 9 films was a rumour, I never said there'd be 9, I've been misquoted, I have Greedo shooting first so Han doesn't kill him in cold blood, Greedo was always meant to shoot first and it just got left out of the film through a mistake in editing. it goes on and on.

I seriously believe that Lucas doesn't realize what he's doing. He seriously believes everything he says. Well, here's hoping he gets his marbles back, that'd be nice.

I think George Lucas ran out of good Ideas and inspiration about 20 years ago, and I think that once the current trilogy has finished most fans will probably be glad to see the franchise laid to rest, I think it's far more likely that we'll get regular updated 'remixes' of the original movies than an episode 7-8-9, it seems strange that the original plan was to be the Adventures of Luke Skywalker then over the years it switched to the fall and rise of Anakin Skywalker, personally I'd be more interested in finding out what hapeened in the time between episode 3 and 4 than any of the events post ROTJ, I'm not sure I really want to see Luke Skywalker, Leia and han zipping around in Dependz undergarments and zimmer-frames.

He either has memory problems or the heat up in Sonoma County has fried his brain.

If we look at just this one entry and if Lucas decides to do a 7-9, we should expect them to come out in roughly 10 years.
Why??

Mark Hamill was born in 1951, making him 52-53 right now. In 10 years, he'd be the right age to reprise his role.

(I'd personally prefer to see some visual production of the books.)

Yeah. The books would be nice.

But I'm afraid NJO would be too visceral to translate to film without an R rating.

Now I certainly wouldn't mind offical books for 7-9. That is, if Lucas would turn the final three stories over to another author.
