At least that he could be a They Came From Outer Space alien who took on the form of Vader’s rotting corpse is still a possibility.

This entire time I’ve remained completely spoiler free and literally one day before I go to see it some asshole I’m friends with posts a meme that jokingly includes a huge spoiler and it’s true. I’m fucking pissed and I unfriended him over it.
You could return the favor if he’s going to see Infinity War? Just kidding. 😉

Much of the plot is constrained within a very specific and limited circumstance that doesn’t really fit with the established rules of the Star Wars universe.

It’s not that. There are certain aspects to the way, for example, the Force is portrayed in the Original Trilogy by those who make overt use of it—how they control it, and how it controls them. This movie seems to color use of the Force, subtle or overt, in a different fashion than the OT does and in a way that people feel recolors certain bits of the OT in a way they dislike.
That’s still non-spoilery, but it’s as close to not-nonspoilery as I can get and still explain.
