Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 92

Could simply be a repressed memory from emotional, not physical trauma, or even another form of Jedi mind trick keeping a mental image of her parents locked away for her own safety?
I found it interesting that the Sith cave in TLJ couldn’t show her what they looked like. It couldn’t even throw up a false image just to sway her?

Reminder that Rey has CTE. Her parents dumped her on Jakku at 5/6/7 years old yet she doesn’t know who they are.

Except she does know who they are.

Allow me to explain myself. Rey was left on Jakku at an age where she would have a clear memory of her parents.
Ergo ipso facto, she got hit on the head.

I understood what you meant. That’s not why I said WTF.

Clearly not, since those people in the flashback flew away, they didn’t die in a pauper’s grave in the Jakku desert.

I agree with you. Rian Johnson seems to have mistaken the audience’s curiosity about Rey’s parentage for a lack of such knowledge on Rey’s part. It kind of works but it’s a little weird.

You don’t know that.

I don’t that they won’t retcon it, but I’m going off the current facts.

This image here looks very much like it’s teasing his redemption based on his look, the location and the way it is shot.

Kylo Ren looks so cool here. I remember reading him described as a “dark prince” in an early TFA leak or merchandising description, and I think it is so fitting. The grandson of Darth Vader accomplishing what he never could. I just love the idea of the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia becoming the Emperor of the galaxy, however brief his rule may be.

The small resistance that struggles to reunite the shattered Republic is being led by none other than his own mother. And his greatest threat left, the last living Jedi, might be someone who he has complicated feelings for. The greatest students of Luke Skywalker, at odds, with the fate of the galaxy in their hands.

Sometimes I wish I was a kid again. I would probably be playing with my toys, imagining Supreme Leader Ren conquering the galaxy while Rey, Finn and Poe go on adventures to find allies and fight stormtroopers. At night I would read the books and novelizations while curled up in my bed without a worry in my mind. Just counting down the days until I get to go to the movies with my dad and I found out how it all ends.

I can’t believe they haven’t had Kylo talk to Anakin’s ghost yet.
I understand that JJ wouldn’t do that, but I’m surprised Johnson didn’t.

Too many people would be pissed if it was Hayden (canonizing the 2004/2011 SE), and too many people would be pissed if it was an actor who looked like Sebastian Shaw (canonizing the 1983 TC/1997 SE/giving a middle finger to the PT).

It’s a no-win situation to use Anakin’s ghost.

I realize that’s the dilemma, but seeing as the SE’s are already canon, they should just do it.
Why create a character who worships Vader and then ignore the most interesting interaction he could have?

The new movies have very deliberately sidestepped which version of the OT is canon. If they take a stance, and that stance is the SE is canon, I’m out.

?
Lucasfilm has said that the SEs are the canon versions.
Heck, TFA even copied an SE shot. When Finn looks at Nima from a distance, it has ships flying around it like the SE matte painting of Mos Eisley does.

There is nothing in the text of the new films that there’s a Hayden ghost or that Jedi Rocks exists. Quoting shots from the SE isn’t at all a declaration of support from the filmmakers.

The filmmaking method is also more similar to the SEs. Seeing the people on Hosnian prime as it blows up was not in the style of the original films, it was in the style of the SE Cloud City crowd shots.

The style is irrelevant.

Did Starkiller Base have a stupid ring around it when it exploded? Nope.

Was there a scene on Cloud City depicting the SE windows instead of the OT windowless hallways? Nope.

Was there a Sarlacc on Jakku with a stupid beak? Nope.

Has Hayden Christensen showed up as the ghost of Anakin? Nope.

Nothing depicted in the post-Disney films requires the SE versions of the OT in order to work. Therefore, either version of the OT could be canon at this point, regardless of which version is “officially” canon.

I don’t get your logic. Disney has said the SEs are canon, therefore they are canon to the ST.

Oh another one could be- Ewan McGregor was in TFA, and he played the Master of SE Anakin.

What? No he didn’t. Ewan isn’t featured in the SE in any way, shape, or form. He was in the PT, and the ST also references Darth Sidious, which is another PT invention. I’ve made my peace with the PT through fan edits, so these things are fine with me.

And Alec Guinness is in TFA too, in the same line as Ewan. (Guinness says “Rey” and Ewan says “these are your first steps.”) So I really don’t understand your point with Ewan’s TFA line.

And I don’t give two shits what is officially canon or not. The OOT works with zero problems with the ST. Until something appears in an ST film that only works because of an SE change, either version of the OT is on equal footing canon wise, and I choose the original version.

I…? Ewan McGregor played Hayden Christensen’s master.
And what “authority” are you using? Because both the creator and the current owners say the SE is canon.

Maybe Force ghosts can control their own appearance, so he can canonically appear as either version of himself.

There might be wiggle room on that as Yoda looks a tad younger in TLJ, or at least happier.

Luke probably didn’t know what young Anakin even looked like at the time, but Kylo worships his grandfather so either form could appear to him and make more sense than the SE change.

But seeing as Kylo is based on Hayden’s Anakin in many ways, having some kind of CG-Sebatsian-Shaw-voiced-by-Matt-Lanter monstrosity would be lame IMO.

Anakin could make a point about the life he could have lived had he not fallen, going from healthy Sebastian to Sebastian right after the helmet came off would emphasize that. Kylo may have ignored certain aspects of Anakin’s life soley focusing on the Vader aspect.

Or, in keeping with appeasing everybody, young Anakin is Hayden, and CG Shaw is unmasked old Anakin. Who voices Shaw though?
