Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 66

Wasn’t there a protocol droid in the comics who was a bounty hunter?

I’m intrigued by the red troopers, the Knights of Ren finally showing up, and Lando’s pimp cane(?).

Fish face guy looks like a rejected design from my favorite Joe Dante film.

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

I loathe the idea of Threepio using a firearm. AOTC flashbacks.

Where’s Rose and Leia?

LOL! I was thinking the Knights of Ni too. Perhaps they’ve been off the past two films seeking the planet of Shrubbery? 😛

Lot of interesting things there. Figure it’s just a retail poster which is why new characters are a bit more prominent and some returning ones aren’t there.

Seeing 3PO with a blaster made me laugh until I remembered AOTC… hopefully we can avoid any head-swapping “die Jedi dogs” cringey shit, but I do like that my fav droid might have more to do. Kylo’s mask is the other thing that makes me pause, hopefully there’s a justification. Rey’s saber too, she’s rebuilt it which I expected, but I guess I need to see the final look more clearly before passing judgement.

Ultimately the thing that most excites me are the new ship designs and stormtroopers, the latter especially. Just thought at first that all the stormtroopers would be red in this, but then I noticed the design is actually quite different and there are white troopers present there too.

Maybe it’s a situation where Threepio exceeds his programming and desperately acts to save lives? Kind of like that TNG episode where Data was pushed too far. Or maybe he’s impersonating a droid bounty hunter as a ruse? If Leia and Chewie can cosplay as one… 😉

Possible poster leak: https://thegeekiverse.com/possible-star-wars-episode-ix-poster-leaked/

EDIT: beaten to it.

If this poster is legit, it seems (at least from what we can make out from this poster), that we’re sadly still mostly recycling classic ship designs. The Knights of Ren look cool though… C-3PO with Chewie’s weaponary might suggest we’ll be saying goodbye to another classic character.

It would be ballsy to kill Chewie after the whole Vector Prime novel fiasco. The author got death threats.

I’d be surprised if they ever killed Chewie honestly. He’s a classic character being played by an actor who could conceivable play him for decades. If they ever make an Episode X it’d be easy to have him around.

I do hope that this poster is either fake, or concept artwork that was conceived, but eventually wouldn’t be used in the film’s promotion. I hope that this poster and the concept art of Kylo Ren wearing his repaired helmet are not in the finished movie.

I don’t see how it’s possible that it’s fake. But as has been said it’s unlikely that this is a poster you’ll see in theaters.

The only things that I’m not a huge fan of are the apparent repairs of Luke’s lightsaber and Kylo’s helmet. The idea of taking stuff that was destroyed in TLJ and the just fixing them for 9 seems to me to just be discounting the forward progression of the story.

I mean, I didn’t even like it when Poe repaired his jacket for Finn to use between 7 and 8. Or the fact that Obi-Wan apparently just recreated his lightsaber from TPM when it was lost and then lost it again in AOTC. Man these things annoy me.

On the opposite side, I love the fact that the Falcon had a new dish array in TFA or that Anakin had a different lightsaber in AOTC that got destroyed so that he could make his iconic one for ROTS.

Thus ends my rant

I will say re: the lightsaber, TLJ implies that Rey will rebuild it along with the Jedi and the rebellion. Her thing is taking the past and moving forward with it and making it her own. So rebuilding it serves the story of the character, though if the new design is basically just the old lightsaber again with minimal difference it’d be a less effective way of making that point than a more significant change to the saber (but you don’t want to go too far and make it look completely different).

Kylo is about killing the past. Which is why the mask being back is a headscracher. There’s probably a few ways you could logically explain it (good intimidation that was working before he broke it), but it’d muddle the symbol it holds for his character. Then again, we don’t know for sure where his character is at in IX yet.

I agree with why Kylo Ren shouldn’t wear a mask anymore, but I don’t mind it if Rey rebuilt Anakin’s lightsaber. Even if she did, I would rather have her create her own saber, very much like what Luke did in Return of the Jedi. It would be nice if Rey kept Anakin’s rebuilt saber as a historic relic for a new generation to wield, kind of like what Darth Maul did with the darksaber in Rebels.

Hmmm with the lightsaber explanation I don’t mind it so much, that’s a good take on it. Still can’t think of a story reason for Kylo that would be regressive. But still, I was hoping for a double bladed lightsaber for Rey using the two halves of Analins crystal. But hey, I’m not a creative director

Could also be a similar jacket? I’m sure there’s a seamstress droid somewhere who fixes up clothing. Otherwise our heroes would be in rags with all the action they’re in.

In ROTJ making your own saber was stated as being a sign your Jedi skills were complete. (And Luke did so in a deleted scene.) So fixing Luke’s saber ought to count, especially if parts are hard to come by now. Not like there’s a repair shop Rey can take it to. Unless Maz knows how to fix it. They have to shoehorn her into the movie again somewhere. 😉

In the prequel era there’s probably an armory in the Jedi temple full of spare sabers. Otherwise, they’d be building them from scratch all day long. A padawan is probably only required to build one once. When the Jedi show up in the arena in AOTC, they have two extra ones handy to throw to Obi Wan and Anakin.

The red troops could potentially be a sign the New Order has split into two factions. One loyal to Kylo and the other to Hux? A three sided war is something we haven’t had yet. Two sides fighting each other and both trying to destroy the Rebellion.
Kylo may wear the mask in front of the troops or when he’s with the Knights.

I do not believe the poster is real. It looks awful. Threepio with a gun? Meme alien face? Horrible backdrop? No thank you please.

Oh no, it’s 100% real, but this is definitely more of a Walmart promo poster than anything else. It’s absolutely not a theatrical one-sheet or anything like that.

JEDIT: Like this one for TFA (though it’s significantly better than the leaked IX one):

If it is a real piece of artwork made at Lucasfilm, and it was a work in progress poster for some potential scrapped ideas, I believe this poster will not be used as promotional material close to around December. This looks like something that could be put in The Art of Episode IX book when it comes out. Or, it could just be a really well put together fake poster that someone made.

Expectations not being met perhaps? Ergo, it must be fake, or scrapped ideas…

Hmmm with the lightsaber explanation I don’t mind it so much, that’s a good take on it. Still can’t think of a story reason for Kylo that would be regressive.

One thing that’s certainly possible is that Kylo himself is regressing in some ways. He’s an emotionally volatile character so it’s possible, but would have to be handled carefully. He’s easily what I’m most excited/anxious about when it comes to IX. His relationship with Rey will be very interesting too. That’s something that will have definitely regressed back to them being enemies, but there’ll always be that underlining connection between them and it’ll be fascinating to see how that plays out. So there might be a way to have Kylo regress a bit with the mask or whatever but still have those underlining progressions nagging at him. Impossible to say at this point though, all we have is literally just one image to go off of.

And I mean who knows, there’s a chance he could wear it in like one or two scenes tops. Plenty of TLJ marketing stuff where he has the mask but obviously it has very little screen time.

But still, I was hoping for a double bladed lightsaber for Rey using the two halves of Analins crystal. But hey, I’m not a creative director

I know this was a common hope, what with Rey having a staff to begin with. Personally I don’t mind it not being a thing as I never found the double bladed saber to be as cool as it was supposed to be.

C-3PO with Chewbacca’s bandolier and bowcaster seems like an idea that was floating around during the concept art/pre-production stages of the film before it would be dropped. It doesn’t seem like an idea that Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams would not want to make use of. While there was concept art of Kylo Ren with a repaired helmet on that got leaked even earlier, it is also likely that that idea was dropped as well. I have already explained why Kylo Ren would not wear his helmet again, and why the crew have now gone into the direction. You may be right about this being a shopping poster used at Wal-Mart, as The Force Awakens had similar posters that were sold at stores such as this, but this could also either be fake, or a work in progress poster that was sketched out as a pinpoint as to which stage they were at in development for characters and ideas to be used in the film.

No, it’s highly unlikely that this would appear in the Art of book. It’s not concept art, it’s using legit promotional photography of the actors in costume. For it to be fan made would be nearly impossible, for it to be a poster concept would be highly improbable. That it is an official poster is possible, and that it is a retail/licensed based artwork is most likely. The latter are often character collages like these, and usually when a leak emerges it is merchandise related. There will almost certainly be an official teaser poster at celebration but it will probably be a lot more minimal than this.
