Comedy is all about confidence. Own your joke, deliver your joke, and move on asap. The problem with “They fly now” is that the joke is done the second Threepio delivers the line. There should be a cut back to the action at that point because your’e not topping that.

General Hugs is perfectly fine, it just goes on too long, too. Star Wars comedy is often very irreverent and of its time (the fact Han is calling Leia sister in Star Wars is some very of-the-moment '70s stuff too. I don’t know that I’d call it “SNL Cringe” but I think you probably could if it was 1979) but what keeps it fresh is that confidence and that timing.

At this point I don’t think it really matters if the ST humour feels a bit contemporary as all trilogies have been very affected by the time they were made in. As long OT-era content has a classic/70’s feel to it then I don’t really care what the other eras do. I think Dave Filoni has this problem figured out pretty well. In Rebels he tried to make it all look and feel very 70’s (without being excessively retro), while Clone Wars’ dialogue and aesthetic felt more late 90’s early 2000’s. What does annoy me is when I read a SW Marvel comic set in the OT-era and they use blatantly modern terms and slang. As far as I’m concerned they can do that all they want for content set during the ST, but it feels weird in the OT (and the PT for that matter). I think this is why people (for the most part) responded positively to Rogue One, while Solo felt off during several scenes/moments.

LOL! I think we should re-title (is that a word?) this thread to “Terrible Obi-wan Kenobi Prequel Dialogue”.

Aside: When trying to hide your identity, someone should have told Obi-wan that changing your last name is probably a good idea. Of course, maybe in the SW universe “Kenobi” is as common as “Smith” (used to be).

I find that answer vague and unconvincing. Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here? And say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

^ Ha! Poe and Finn will be looking at Rey a little differently after this 😃

To me, ”They fly now” would have worked much better if only 3PO said it. He delivers it in keeping with who he was when he was in the asteroid field from Empire.

“You can write this &^%$, but you can’t say it.” The delivery is terrible and I think just having Finn and Poe exchange a glance that expresses their disbelief (or maybe lack thereof) would have been much better.

Just as I suspected, it was just marketing. But I gotta admit, that was a clever move by the team. In today’s episode of the Star Wars Show, Andi and Anthony went on a “shopping spree” on eBay for Star Wars merch. Most scripts are on iPads these days so “leaving it under a bed and a cleaner blaa blaa” sounded a bit weird right from the start.

I agree. To have them respond with only glances would be much better. You could still have a typical 3PO line but stay in the seriousness of the moment. Sort of a ”shut him up or shut him down” vibe. Like Lucas before him, seems as if Abrams doesn’t believe in the less is more approach either.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker | “Duel” TV Spot

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjdjyvnOGtg

Not gonna lie… hearing Duel of the Fates gave me goosies right away.

I enjoyed watching that - though it seems Palpatine’s lines may have been recorded for trailer (or other promos) - and not from the actual film itself?

I am probably wrong - it just seemed a little ‘off’ (and it is just a short tv spot afterall).

His lines have at least been edited or cut to fit. But then so many of the new films have trailers with random sound bites that don’t make the final release.

Not to mention that Finn should know about such troopers, and Poe has encountered jetpack troopers in his Marvel (Disney) comic.

Troopers with jetpacks is far from a new thing.

So much for Disney respecting the EU.

It’s this, more than the humor in and of itself, which has fans ripping it a new one.

“Anakin had those qualities so rarely seen, exuding an unmistakable confidence and yet still able to touch one’s heart in simply knowing how he was so flawed… wounded.”
