it is killing me not watching these clips, but I really want to be hit with the full power of SOTDS when this finally gets released. I love this forum, what with people like Trooperman, Adywan and Jambe Davdar knocking out some top class quality material

I like it! And the segue into it is VERY well done. Seamless even.

It's fresh and new and yet old at the same time. Plus, it really sets this edit apart from all others.

Fascinating. I like it. The only problem I see with the transition is that the very beginning is a bit warmer-sounding than the replacement track, which pretty much the only thing that gives it away. Which movie are you taking the first part from? ANH or ESB might work better, if you're currently using the one from AOTC. The horns were a lot 'blattier' in the old ones... ANH especially.

Yes, I hear this as well. I can fix that easily, probably using an earlier recording as you suggested. To be honest, I didn't spend much time on this- I was just listening to the Gerhardt album and thinking how similar the two tracks were. Then, I synched it up to the video, changed the key of the opening fanfare to make it work, and it worked really well (I thought).

In fact, I'm kind of embarassed to say that a lot of the best parts of this movie were happy accidents, or crazy "What if..." ideas that actually really improved the thing...

Well, at bare minimum I need to dub Anakin for ROTS, the new main titles must be inserted into ROTS and Ep. I, Weezer and/or THX have to come back and dub the stormtroopers, Sluggo and Company must return to record Nemodians and Jar-Jar.

For Episode I, I was really hoping someone else would tackle that- I really don't have a whole lot of time to "play around" with Star Wars after SOTDS.

Episode III- I'm really distressed about. Fundamentally, I'm not seeing a way to turn it into a good movie. With Episode II, largely with the help of Mark Haslett, we were able to twist the basic story into something that's good and coherent and redefine Anakin. With Episode III, what can you do? Yoda and Sidious have a lightsaber fight that ends for no reason at all. ??? Palpatine has ridiculous looking makeup after zapping himself with his lightning (rather than a slow Dark Side corruption as was being strongly implied in Episode II). ??? Then there's the whole General Grievous problem. Is he Darth Maul? Does that stretch the limits of believability? I guess it's no worse than finding out that 3 out of the 4 main characters from completely different backgrounds are all in the same immediate family in ROTJ...

Maybe this is material for a new thread...

I agree with ID here. I was stunned at how much I liked this. When I read your initial message it wasn't clear to me that you used the original opening and then blended that into the new music. That is definitely the key to making it work.

Wow. I too am shocked at how much I like that there. Honestly, when I saw the announcement that you were trying this, I instantly set up a wall. "No way, he's gotta be kidding. Impossible. Sacrilege! All that ADR work has finally fried his brain!" But it actually works very nicely. The only problem is that now, it would be preferable to integrate that theme into the underscore. The title theme wasn't used only for the titles, but throughout the trilogy in the score. If you want to leave it as just the title theme, it still is lovely, but in Star Wars, it would be great to have worked in, perhaps as a Republic theme (there was the Republic fanfare in ROTS, but it wasn't in the previous two films).

As far as the rest of the trilogy, don't forget about the Starkiller Ranch. True, it would be lacking Trooperman's personal creativity and skills, but last time I checked, we are still planning to have it line up with SOTDS (that's why there hasn't been much work on it in a while). I'm hesitant to really say more since Commander Courage is in charge, but don't forget about it. It won't be Trooperman exactly (which I am finding more and more unfortunate as we go along ), but it'll be along the same lines.

Great work so far Trooperman! And don't worry about the March thing. That could actually work out nicely for me--my birthday's in April. Don't sweat it. Do what you can, and nothing more. You've already put in plenty of time and work on this. Whenever it comes out, it'll be worth the time it's taken, I'm sure of it.

It seems to me that this new theme is similiar in style to the JW theme that you should really only have to drop parts of the Korngold music in key parts of SOTDS and you got it.

Yes, this has always been the hardest thing in EP.III to get around, Palpatines retardard transition in the middle of the film. I have just thought of a possible way around it. What if we can work it so that we never see the end of the confrontation with Palp. Windu. Maybe mention the out come via an Anakin voice over explaining the he realized the jedi were wrong and that he became Palpatine's apprentice. It could then be said that several years have passed. It would be some tricky editing, we would have the problem of Padme being pregnant and would no longer be able to kill her off. George sure made a huge mess of that film. I still cringe every time somebody says it is by far the best of the PT.

Back on the real topic. All I have to saw about the crawl is:

FANTASTIC!

I am very impressed with how well it works. And no big deal on the release date slide back, get this thing done right.

You could edit all the pregnant Padme parts, to the second act. I haven't seen ROTS in a long time though so I forget a lot.

Awesome stuff, really really good! Love the new envisioning of the nightclub! I don't know where you culled all that additional footage and i don't even care! Works very well. Terrific look as well--gets away from that awful, awful digital look, with all its red. Fucking brilliant choices here.

But, the Hayden thing....yeah.

Doesn't work for me. Comes across as dubbed, and not only dubbed but dubbed by a fan, and not very well either. The voice is all weird and low-pitched and it almost sounds as if it is meant to be a joke or some kind of funny-sounding parody. No offense, obviously I understand that it is so that there can be freedom in completely re-writing Anakin but if this is the result i would much rather have Hayden Christenson. I dunno, i hope you can improve this, both in delivery and tone and the way in which it is mixed into the film. Don't mean to sound harsh on all your work or anything but the acting and recording level really doesn't blend. But in all other areas everything is a total success! I'm sure the final product will be still be better than the piece of shit Lucas crapped out into film cans in 2002 (oh wait, he didn't even use film cans anymore).

The main title music I have used comes from this same album that was the original inspiration in the first place.

And finally, it's very possible that this was actually the main title theme used in the original TEMP TRACK for Star Wars- notice the similarity to the original Star Wars theme.



lol I love what you can learn on this forum! I went and bought this album immediately after reading your post Trooperman from Ebay for like $10. The track is called "Kings Row" and you're right, is eerily similar to the Star Wars theme. Much of the music is very John William-esque and I wouldn't be surprised if Williams references Korngold as one of his influences.

Wow, that was really great, and I thought the Jedi mind trick line was pretty funny.

It looks very , very professional, I am really impressed. The cantina music isn't really my cup of tea, but that is purely personal, I think overall it is an amazing clip.

However the voice for Anakin sounds really amateur hour. It sounds exactly like a person 'putting on a voice' and talking slightly below their normal register. It really sounds flat and hokey to me. I have no problem with it not being Hayden's voice, I only saw Sith once, and can't even remember vaguely what he sounds like, but that dubbed voice sticks out like a sore thumb in what is otherwise a really professional piece of work. I don't think it needs to sound like Hayden (he talks very woodenly anyway from memory) but does need to sound real.
It sounds exactly like when I use friends for short films rather than grabbing actors, they always seem to hit that flat kind of sound, whereas actors, even local dodgy stage ones don't seem to do that. I tend to get the local performing group to do voice ADR even if I don't use tham as actors.
The only people who are worse in my experience are 'voice over' people, they make truly horrible voice actors!.

I hope you are putting together a making of or an audio track describing what you did, how and why, it would be great to hear.

I hope it didn't come across that way, I love how it is looking and was offering feedback as to the parts that I didn't think measured up to the excellence of the rest of it.
I was aiming for constructive criticism, if it came across as anything else then I apologise.

At work the director once came in, took a look at something I had just spent a week on and yelled "That is SHIT" and walked out. He looked at the *exact* same piece the next day and said "now that is better, THAT is what I wanted!" and then signed off on it. I try to be a bit more constructive than that.

I wasn't referring to you specifically, just everyone who is coming in now and shitting on the dubbing when it's a month or two away from completion.

Of course it's not going to be perfect, we don't expect it to be. It wouldn't be perfect if Trooperman was actually on set for the original filming.

I guess it just irks me to keep reading posts praising everything else and then criticizing the hell out of his dub work. Most of it has been constructive (offering suggestions on how to make it sound more natural, etc), but it's still getting a little late in the game for this.

Its constructive criticism. The dub work is poor in execution and quality. Deal with it. Everyone seems to love everything else. If the dubbing remains as it is then it will be a large mar on an otherwise vastly improved film.

I would have mentioned it earlier had I heard it earlier. I only heard it for the first time yesterday. If it really is nearly 'in the can' then I guess the suggestions don't help much, but there is always the 'special edition' .

It was only the person doing Anakins voice that really jumped out at me, the voice actor not the process. It just sounded so "I'm putting on a voice now" that it pulled me straight out of the clip. (I guess it hit me because I always get that problem when making shorts using non-actors, and no matter what country/accent/upbringing the guy always sounds *exactly* like that - it is some weird universal phenomenon)
I was trying to be constructive in as much as mentioning trying to find an actual actor rather than a 'friend' to do the voice work, or get the person involved to try it in their natural speaking voice. If it needed to then be lower you would get a better result pitch shifting it than getting the person to artificially speak in a lower voice.

I hadn't actually read any other posts re the dubbing when I posted mine (I saw Zombies just *after* I posted and then realised my post was redundant).

I figured that is why people put sample posts up, to get them critiqued. I reckon criticism is to be encouraged, you don't have to follow it or agree with it of course!
