Thanks for your comments and help, guys. You don't know how devastating this was to me. I've asked around, and I'm going to try some more things (Adywan was also kind enough to help me out). If it's not solved by the end of the week, I'll just bite the bullet, buy the program, and get my files back. Just from looking at the recoverable material, it looks like next week I'll be able to pick up exactly where I left off, which is nice.

Unfortunately, discs might not start going out until the beginning of December, with this setback. What can you do, though. I'm just praying that everything's intact. Luckily, I saved most of the video and my actual project files on a different drive, so I already know that that's survived.

On the good side, I have some more fantastic ADR recordings from Sluggo, and hairy_hen is going to attempt the character of Jar-Jar. Once I can get to my files, I will send him the dialogue.

Thanks!

I don't mind the setback at all. I just want to see this wonderful project completed.

Wow my heart fell to my stomach. I hope you can recover most of your work...I've been there, slaving away and then *poof* it's gone. It's like a nuke goes off in your brain. I think it's what watching someone die feels like. Well, just have to salvage what you can and move on...

My files are back, and SOTDS is back along with them. You all have Adywan to thank for this one. My deepest thanks, sir. I won't go into details, but he supplied me with an.... alternate method of getting the files;p All of the important stuff is here. My ADR, everyone else's ADR, all of the audio tracks and the custom surround splits, the transitions, all of the video tests, the rotoscoped frames, soundtracks... everything. I really believe that this program rescued all of my files.

"I've been there, slaving away and then *poof* it's gone. It's like a nuke goes off in your brain."

Think about I felt on Thurday/Friday, thinking that this entire thing was down the drain. I felt sick almost. But the files are back and I will continue work shortly.

I'm really very happy right now. That was a close one.

I hope you'll forgive me for a week or two delay on the release date. I was really hoping to get a lot done this weekend, what with Columbus day and all. Then this had to happen.

-------------------------

THX has just gotten me his recordings for the stormtroopers, Jango Fett, and Owen Lars. I will listen to them as soon as I'm able to.

I also want to thank those of you that offered to help me pay for that other program. I'm really amazed and very please that you're generous enough to pay money to see this completed. Hey, maybe I can charge every time this movie is copied!

Oh wait, that's illegal...

This is great news, Trooperman. And don't worry about the release date being pushed back, because a delayed project is better than no project.

Whew! I was pretty upset to hear about all the stuff being lost, but I'm glad it's all able to be recovered. That would have really sucked if it was all gone for good.

I'll give JarJar my best shot. Even if it isn't used I'll still have a blast doing it!

I am also very glad that you were able to recover everything. I don't think anyone can fault for you needing a little bit more time than what you had previously thought.

Let us hope that it is smooth sailing from here on out!

Yes, let's hope. (*gulp*)

In response to a couple previous questions, I do want to do a new trailer after I get all of my new voices. The sound and color will be much more polished at that point.

This is EXACTLY the type of thing I had in mind, darth_newmacer!

Maybe Lucas will implement some of Trooperman's ideas for AOTC!

Ha ha! He wouldn't be able to do that without replacing about half of the music score, which he can't do. (And also recognizing that there was any problem in the first place).

Seriously, though, I would be absolutely ecstatic if anyone at Lucasfilm got their hands on this. I know Rick McCallum has seen more than one edit of Ep. I. I just would be really curious as to what their reaction would be- if they would admit it was a superior movie, or laugh about it and make fun of it (as Rick has done in the past).

Trooperman: Glad to hear that all of the stuff you've worked on is still there. Need I suggest that you make multiple redundant backups of everything related to the project onto blank CD's and/or DVD's so that it would be impossible for any such thing to happen again?

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Nope. Ha ha!- I've learned my lesson from this. Since nobody asked, the reason I have to push this project back a couple weeks and not just one is because about a week before the HD disaster, I lost a TON of work on the Obi-Wan/Jango fist fight sequence. To make up what I had done, I need more time. I didn't post this particular incident on the forum when it happened.

And obviously I need a little time for DVD backup purposes! This is 60 GB of stuff. This WILL NOT happen again

Sorry for the wait, guys. I'm swamped with "real life" work through this month and November, but I'm working overtime on this because I really want you to see this as soon as possible, and you've waited a long time. Many of you have only been following the project for a relatively short time, but people like CC, Preston, MTHaslett, Sluggo, etc. have been waiting a heck of a long time. I also want to be done with it and move on So please pardon the time it's taking- if not in November, this movie will certainly be out for Christmas. You do what you can do...

Some more good news- you all remember the discussion about getting the mix to sound authentic even though it's being dubbed? Well, adding ambience, music, and redoing the reverb on my dubbed lines made a little better, but what really made it click is the foaley sound effects. The rustle as someone moves, or the clatter as they sit down or stood up. I got some of this from the ADR recordings (noise in between takes), but I got a lot of it from the Star Wars mono mix, which I believe has a lot more production audio than the other mixes. Suddenly, when I added this stuff in (to the garage scene, specifically) everything clicked and the illusion was complete.

So just adding "production noise" and clatter on the "set" is really going to save this mix.

No. Dialogue will only be changed during long shots, back shots, and other shots where you can't see the mouth moving.

I sense an air of skepticism here; you probably won't believe this until you see it. Everyone else I talked to about it laughed at me (including my relatives), so I don't know why I expected this to be different.

Just something funny I thought I'd bring up. One year and of course I'm still skeptical, but optimistically skepetical of course

Trooperman,

I haven't been saying much lately, but at this stage, what is there left to say? It's been well over a year (heck, a year and a half!), and I can't wait to finally see the end result after all this time. Just wanted to let you know I'm still following and supporting "Shroud of the Dark Side"!

(No pressure, but after waiting this long, I'm expecting something amazing.)

"Well that's the real trick, isn't it?" Ha ha! I hope I meet expectations. It's kind of hard because you all know a lot of the surprises beforehand....

Actually, MagnoliaFan himself took a couple years on "Balance of the Force." It's just that it didn't bother anybody because nobody knew about it until it was complete and out in the open. The nature of this project (lots of fan help and input) made that impossible. Also, I didn't actually start editing on the software I'm using now until July/August of last year. And on top of that, last year was a very busy time for me and the amount of time I had to work on this was very, very limited.

However, I believe that this will be successful. If there are technical glitches, then I will fix them for Version 2.0 (which will include a dual-layer release). But I think that even if there are a couple aspects that are technically lacking, the actual content of this movie is gold. The acting is for the most part wonderful, which is pretty amazing because none of us are professional actors that I know of. You'll be suprised, I think, about how much it does NOT sound like an amateur "fan-film". Pacing-wise, music wise, and acting-wise, I think it's great. Technically, there are some dodgy moments that hopefully will be corrected in time for release.

Right now, I'm working on completing the whole Anakin/Dooku/Obi-Wan/Yoda sequence, the Clone War, and Uncle Owen. I actually had two auditions for Uncle Owen, one from "THX" and one from Sluggo. I want to thank you both tremendously for filling the void that the original actor left behind. I ultimately chose Sluggo's recording because it sounded the most similar to Phil Brown. I get tickled to pieces watching this scene (between Anakin, Owen, and 3po), knowing that the entire conversation is newly created. My only issue is a bit of lip synch difficulty, but I will get around that.

Ha ha! I'll save the gloating until SOTDS is in my DVD player and fully functioning without any glitches. But yeah, I remember posting that- that was a while ago. I think it was more irritation that I wasn't getting good, intelligent feedback like I'm getting with you guys. This thread was originally in General Discussion, and I didn't feel like people were taking me seriously. And they weren't, of course

*Does a triple backflip* I'm so glad you weren't seriously hindered by this setback.

Well I was thinking about your edit today and what in AotC needs to be re-worked for the better and one thing that struck me as i was thinking was the arena fight. I can't remember what you planned for it but I think it might be one of those things that's irrepairable. i know in some ways the film can't ever actually be improved because of how inherently flawed it is due to lucas' carelessness: Boba has to be in this as a pointless cameo... jar jar, a complete idiot, has to be given the important position as representative to naboo... Portman still looks very boredand the rolling in the grass... the Sifodyas nonsense... etc, It's a lot to attempt to fix and like you said before you were having some trouble with editing the ridiculous lightsaber battles. So I'm not expecting to miraculously see a completely different movie if you know what I mean, but what you're doing should definitely make it watchable.

One thing i overlooked myself because I was blinded by cgi fx everywhere was how stupid it is that Anakin and Obiwan are handcuffed to a few pillars. I'm thinking simply "They're jedi." And Dooku doesn't tell the geonosian (who should know anyway) that they have this power called the force that could not only unlock the handcuffs but probably lift a rock or something and crush whatever animals are released. Just shoot them. I always felt there was something wrong with this whole scenario but never cared enough to think about it much until toy selling General Grievous came along and Lucas had to have obiwan waste time dueling a ridiculous coughing android guy. It screams, "yeah, it doesn't make any sense, but I just don't care." It's nothing but an action figure commercial to set up the three beasts to find later in happy meals... gosh it's so obvious to me now why that was done...

I'm seriously trying to think of a way to make this play out better; maybe have the force be disabled within the arena but that won't work... this will probably not be one of the things you can fix outside of dubbing new dialogue maybe... yeah maybe you could have Anakin say "these cuffs are force proof or something?"

In what movie do we see the Jedi unlock cuffs and lift rocks to crush giant beasts with the Force? I remember a couple movies where the greatest Jedi of all has to struggle to lift big rocks or pull an X-Wing out of the swamp.

By your reasoning the entire Death Star Trench sequence makes no sense-- why doesn't Darth Vader just force-wish all the Rebel fighters into the sides of the trench? Answer: because that ain't how it works.

If the Harryhausen homage of the arena sequence doesn't give you a thrill, then I'm sorry. But that's the reason it's there-- it's the kind of scene Lucas loves from the movies that inspired Star Wars and it's done to his taste here. I'm not thrilled with the beats of it and I look forward to the new version (where Anakin and Padme have a plan)-- but I sure get why it's there.

Did they really put these arena creatures into Happy Meals, or are you making that up?

The Emperor unlocks Luke's cuffs using the force in Return Of The Jedi.

However, the arena scene is still one of the best and most Star Wars-y moments in the PT.
