I think it's fine, much more interesting than the "dexter" scene. The mohawk is peculiar and unnecessary, but unavoidable. Nice job.

Thanks for posting a new clip, Trooperman! Good stuff!

I like the "new" ship shot. Shortened, flipped, new sound, and, I *think* slowed down a touch? Much more OT! Good work!
I think this new scene will work much better than Dex. However....
Still don't like the droids look and movement. The ONLY thing I think you could try and do (until replacing the droids entirely with a HAL 3000) would maybe play with the frame rate (like you are doing with yoda). Maybe make them look a little jerky...a little stop-motion-y, if you will.
One more thing...I had a hard time understanding his last sentence. He said "It's a toxic kyber dart." Then I had to watch it 2 more times to finally get the rest.
Anyways, something to like about...
Again, I really did enjoy the clip. And this scene will work even if you don't get to tweak it anymore.

I'm curious about this idea of a "Hal 3000" idea that alot have been suggesting. What was the footage in mind that hinted at to replace the style of the droids? Were you thinking of literally using footage of hal 3000 in the shot? Why are we going for a big box with lights on it as a detective droid? That doesn't sound very star wars to me and actually sounds very 1960's star trek. I couldn't see Irvin Kershner excepting a design like that if it were involved in ESB. It almost seems impossible to switch between this footage and something else and make it blend without notice, considering the depth, position and the environment that obi wan has behind him. Comments?

I think the HAL 9000 idea actually came from TM saying that he didn't like the analysis droid scene that much, and what he would really prefer would be to digitally replace the jedi analysis droids with a sort of jedi analysis computer, and he gave HAL 9000 as an example as to what it might look like. I actually think this would work, and that it would fit in with the OT style of things quite well (I mean a big analysis computer, not actually HAL himself), it would make more sense to have a computer that can scan things and tell you what kind of technology it is and where it is from rather than some droids who attend punk concerts during their off hours.

That's correct, and I think it would work too. Not actually using HAL, of course, but just that type of thing. There are only a couple shots with Obi-Wan and the droids in the same frame, and the others can be completed replaced with the new machine. You can bet that some type of large computer processor would be a lot closer to the OT style than CG droids zipping around and wearing spiked hair. The whole spiked hair conversation really cracked me up, by the way

I don't think it'd be that hard for a SPX guy, though....

The music in that scene is actually from "Citizen Kane". In temp, I used brooding music from Psycho, and then realized it was far too familiar to use. Of course, the same could be said about other music I'm using, like some music from "Raiders". But that's a flaw inherent in the project- if I were to find less familiar cues that conveyed the same type of emotion, then I'd use them.

"Still don't like the droids look and movement. "

Neither do I.

"The ONLY thing I think you could try and do (until replacing the droids entirely with a HAL 3000) would maybe play with the frame rate (like you are doing with yoda). Maybe make them look a little jerky...a little stop-motion-y, if you will."

I could- the problem being that Obi-Wan is in a couple of the shots, making that impossible. If I did it for some shots and not others, it wouldn't be consistent.

"One more thing...I had a hard time understanding his last sentence. He said "It's a toxic kyber dart." Then I had to watch it 2 more times to finally get the rest."

I'll see what I can do- I was actually expecting that comment from more people.

The basic problem with this scene is that it throws a wrench into everything I've been working on in this movie. The style of the effects up to that point is very good, and then you get to this scene and it goes to pot with the gratuitous CG animation. For the DVD-5 release, however, (edition 1) it's looking like this is the way it'll be.

I'm glad that people are liking it, though. I could post more video clips, but I don't really want to give much else away. I haven't come close to showing you the best sections yet.

-----------------------

I completed the whole trial/confession/arena sequence yesterday, up to the point where the Jedi are surrounded by the droids. The only things missing are a few shots I haven't rotoscoped yet. The method in which I built the sound mix was... pretty ridiculous, considering the fact that I took all of the sound effects from the final mix of AOTC, and added my own music and sound effects when necessary. It was pretty pathetic that originally the music was mixed so low into the track (and when it is audible, it's mostly percussion) that this was even possible. It shouldn't have been possible.

I'm getting more excited than any of you about this, because I just watched the arena sequence, and it's so much fun. I used a couple tricks while I was at it, on a couple of the monster shots, to make them more realistic. For instance, on the rhino, I chroma-keyed out some of the bright red, so that it blends a little better. There's also two close-ups in this sequence that aren't particularly long, but they give it so much meaning. I stumbled on both of the shots by accident.

Anyway, I'm excited! Work continues...

Three questions, Trooperman --

1. How does the stormtrooper dialouge sound in the film? And have you used my Jango lines or are you using a different source?

2. Have you changed any lightsaber colors? (Besides Mace's from purple to blue)

3. In the Dooku/Obi-Wan interrogation scene, there's a part after Dooku says something and there's a close-up of Obi-Wan from the back of his head but you can tell by the way his head is nodding that he's saying something. I don't have the video on my computer any more, so I can't tell you the exact part where it happened, but it really annoyed me. I was wondering if you going to fix that.

I certainly understand not wanting to give everything away. And I don't except you to...
...but if you come across a scene or section where you're not sure of something (be it color, editing, music, sound effects, vocals) please feel free to share and let us give imput.
As you already know, we (or at least *I*) can be very picky about these things...so you'll know you'll be getting honest feedback!

Thanks again for sharing the droid clip!
I hope someone will come along and help out with that scene!

Robot scene idea. Instead of some funky special effect, why not just cover up the whole window with a solid wall? Or change it to a window of an exterior coruscant shot? Or the solid wall with an "I Want to Believe" UFO poster on it? Why would this analysis computer need to be a huge thing, or even a room full of droids? I'd imagine Obi-wan was at a terminal that connected to the mainframe somewhere else. The explanation would come out of the speakers of the computer.

If you are still insistent on adding effects to this scene. then maybe you could have extra text on the computer screen that matches the dialogue as well.

Trooperman, aren't you working with photoshop for the lightsaber shots?
If you are, it *should* be fairly simple to play with that shot of Obi and the droids.
As long as you could create images of a "HAL" for those different angles (and/or close ups)...it seams possible.
Let me know if you are, and I'll try and explain how to do it...

Cool clip! To be extra old school, maybe the droid could be speaking that cool droid language the sandcrawler droid speaks, with the lines in subtitle. Maybe the lines could be boiled down to: "the metal is common to this region..." Even on earth we can tell where certain metals come from. Anyway, it's better than the diner already.

Hey, in response to that picture you posted Trooperman, were you looking for something like this:
http://ia331340.us.archive.org/1/items/wqqwqweweqqwe/test1.jpg
It is a rough sketch, and I probably won't be able to work on the actual film itself, but this was the first image that kind of came to my mind when you posted that image. It makes this scene look pretty OT, but hey maybe thats a good thing!

Heh . . . I spent several hours reading through this entire thread recently, to make sure I was quite clear on everything being done. That's important for someone recording dialogue for a movie, to know all about what the movie's like, would you agree? lol

I'm quite excited about this whole thing, really.

It most have taken an while to get through this entire thread.

P.S. What character are you recording dialogue for?

I'm doing Mas Amadda or whatever his name is, the blue guy who's Palpatine's assistant. It's pretty brief and I'm almost done, but I had to redo it to accomodate the evolving ideas on the story (which are excellent).

Is there a voice for JarJar yet? Trooperman mentioned his preference would be for him to speak Basic with a Scottish or lower class English accent, rather than subtitled alien speech. I can do both of those pretty well I think, so if there isn't something already being done I'll volunteer.

I would say a Jar Jar reading might be cool for you to try as I'm uncertain how the current (my) reading of the lines turned out. I'm sure TM might appreciate a bit of selection there.

Maybe Lucas will implement some of Trooperman's ideas for AOTC!
Seriously though, do you think he'll change anything in AOTC?

I'll put it this way. We know that Lucas tinkers with the OOT soo much because he feels they are not good enough every time he watches them. When TPM had its premiere , he told E! entertainment that he thought the movie was "Perfect". That is what he thinks of his star wars movies, the prequels to him are the ones that he finally got right. All that other crap that came out in 77-83 was just lame special effects. He's a little cookoo ya know. So no, don't expect any dramatic changes to the prequels, not coming from him.

Poor guy, all these years we thought he was a hero, one of the greatest film makers of all time. Now it turns out that he had intended to make six crapy movies all along, and that three of them (mostly due to the help of good directors) accidentaly turned out to be good. I am starting to understand the guy now. Suddenly the special editions make perfect sense. George, if you're reading this, I am giving you a big ol' pat on the back. You succeeded buddy! Congradulations!

Hi folks, thanks for all the comments. No time to talk now, but suffice it to say that this entire project was almost destroyed last Thursday(see here).

The drive spontaneously malfunctioned and became corrupted and unreadable, which was the worst of my fears. After trying a lot of other stuff, I downloaded a trial of DiskInternals NTFS Recovery 1.5 (here) and was able to see most of my files intact, to my relief. However, I can't save or access these files without plunking down $100. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated....

Trooperman,

That's awful, but I'm glad it seems you might be able to recover the files.

If you were to start accepting paypal donations, I'm sure you'd have the $100 soon.

Good luck!
