Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released) — Page 100

As long as the alien dialogue for Jar Jar is actually voiced, not just a reversed and garbled alternate language track, it should work fine.

However it's very easy to remove Jar Jar's dialogue entirely if you so choose, though this could be seen as a cop out considering his (unfortunately) prominent role in the first film.

EDIT: Woohoo, 100 pages! :D

I'd rather Jar Jar's dialogue all be removed. The idea that he's responsible for the clone army being ordered, for starting the mythical clone wars, is beyond awful. And if that plot point is taken out there's no need for any Jar Jar dialogue at all.

Re his prominent role in TPM. I don't think it's a big deal if Jar Jar's all but cut out of Ep 2. Qui Gon is - and he's a far more important part of TPM.

That said, if his dialogue is to be kept I'd definitely prefer an alien language to an English dub.

I don't think any editor worth his salt would leave the part where Jar Jar singlehandedly gets Palpatine more power. I'm just talking about the start of the movie, where Obi Wan and Anakin meet Padme again. It's hard to believe they'd just say nothing to Jar Jar the whole time :p

Well, unless my memory is failing me, the subplot of Jar Jar being responsible for approving Palps' army remains in SOTDS.

One of the things about Attack of the Phantom I liked was how Obi Wan and Anakin ignored Jar Jar when they were re-introduced. I'd personally like to see the same approach taken here.

I agree... But if the alien language or redub doesn't work, I can deal with never hearing him. =)

I would have to go back to look... But regardless, I don't believe it will remain in the final cut... Could be wrong though.

The only thing about having them ignore Jar Jar and have him not speak is that a frame by frame rotoscope of Obi Wan walking is required along with a motion track to show him walking back into frame earlier than when he did originally (while Jar Jar speaks). Otherwise, he comes out of nowhere and would not have had time to walk the distance he did.

Author

He walks off frame just before Anakin says "she hardly even recognised me, Jar Jar". If you watch the Phantom editor's cut, you'll see what he had to do to fix it. I don't think you can cut it without cutting Anakin's line, and Obi's subsequent reply would have to go with it.....

Author
Time

Shooting completely from the hip...could you just cut the "Jar Jar" part of the line?

Author
Time

Interesting idea...I'll have to give that a go in my edit. Still doesn't address the Obi Wan issue though. In fact it gives him even less time to walk to where he reassures Anakin.

Maybe he felt the urge to use force-speed off camera :p

Author

Cut the whole exchange.... Everything after Obi-Wan and one-eyed willie are discussing armed guards.... You don't need anymore information. It's one more time Anakin gets to be whiny.

Now I'm confused. Is the idea to cut Jar-Jar out as much as possible?

Wouldn't it be jarring to cut out Jar-Jar in Episode II after playing such a prominent role in Ep. I?  Better or for worse, Jar-Jar is part of Star Wars.  My goal, like MagnoliaFan, was to try and change his character to make him as inoffensive as possible...even humorous.

I dislike Jar-Jar as much as the next guy, but can we cut him out completely in Ep. II?  If I can get this dub to work out, I think he could be a good character.

And by the way, I've spoken with Nanner Split and he has offered to try both English and alien for Jar-Jar.  So if we were to use the alien, it wouldn't be backwards audio or Spanish or anything like that...it would be newly recorded.

The reason I'd be a bit hesitant about redubbing Jar Jar is that you're not redubbing TPM with the same voice, and for me personally I'd like SOTDS to be the middle chapter of the ultimate fan edited prequel trilogy.

I don't think it would be a big problem if Jar Jar had no dialogue. I really don't like the subplot of Jar Jar being responsible for getting Palpatine's army. It just demeans the whole myth of the clone wars we grew up with... so take out that subplot and there's no need for Jar Jar at all. And like I wrote earlier Qui Gon isn't in the last two prequels, and he was the protagonist of TPM. So dropping Jar Jar wouldn't be without precedent.

I'm for the redub, TM.... I'm only for cutting him out if he stays the way he is... I feel, you're on the right track. Just wanted to clarify! =)

Well, perhaps there will be a TPM cut by TM... Not speaking for him, but who knows....

To be honest there are lots of characters that only really play a part in one movie, look at Grand Moff Tarkin, in a few scenes, played his part and thats it. That is what i feel Jar Jar should be, a werid character that was in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up getting dragged along in the adventure. I would always presume that Jar Jar would be welcomed back to the Gungan city and that was that. No need for him to be a big cog in the machine that is Star Wars, he doesnt need to be a main reason for the empire to take control. Seems like they needed a spot to fill and George sat there for a while a then said "I know!" and then continued to write the rest.

Just recieved the workprint copy from Ben, and watched it all the way through in one go! excellent! best edit of episode 2 by far!

I especially liked the new music for the opening crawl - is this an edit of the main theme and another piece of music? or is it from a star wars game? Was great!, I for one get a bit bored with the usual opening theme and this was the first great surprise of the movie  - really set's the tone for things to come and is reminiscent of classic swashbuckling type movies  :) I got so caught up in the music i forgot to read your new crawl lol so i'll have to watch it again.

So much work has gone into this and it feels like a lot of thought went into the arrangement of each scene, with the different music choices and altered dialogue, sound effects. The clones voices are much improved and liked the clone radio chatter during the battle! I dont want to spoil anymore for people that havnt seen it yet.

Good work :)

Yes, the new music really makes the film fresh.

Would be great if that would remain the opening theme for all prequel films.

Cut - I can't recall the name of the music, but TM was explaining to me that he believed that George Lucas gave this piece of music to John Williams to give him an example of the kind of theme he was looking for.

I also received my workprint today, and I was absolutely blown away. Really excellent work. I had the experience I've never had from a Fan-Edit before - that of watching a whole different film. It really is so different in mood as to be almost unrecognisable from the original. It just feels like it was made in the 70s.

Also, you never realise how much music is shoved needlessly into EVERY scene and transition in the PT until you hear the familiar roar of an engine travelling through space, or the pitter patter of rain on Kamino. Simply brilliant!

Glad you got see it finally, Brash!

I wish everyone could get a look at the vision. It's a strong one. =)
