Episode 3: Fan Editing Ideas Discussion — Page 3

What? You guys made a cover already? And you really must change the title?
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

"And you really must change the title? "

Rikter, you don't like the title "Revenge of the Sith"? (or is this MagnoliaFan's "creative decision". )

"I'm not that bothered by Vader's NOOOOOO. After all, 20 years have passed when we see him in ANH. It's the stumbling that got me. Still, even then I can understand the "getting use to his new limbs" angle."

Wow, and I'm completely the opposite. The stumbling made perfect sense, but the "Nooo" sucked. Every other grunt and yell Vader (JEJ) gives in ESB and ROTJ is great. Too bad he never says anything of the kind in the OT, so that Lucas could copy/paste it (i.e. "Bring me my shuttle.")

"I'm also weighing things like if the Qui-Gon scene is not on the dvd, should I cut the reference altogether and the one in II, or finish the Qui-Gon scene myself."

I'm wondering about how the fake "Qui-gon" screen shot was created. That would be an excellent effect to use on existing video. Recreating the dialogue is something else (unless you just had Qui-gon standing behind Yoda while Yoda is talking to Obi-wan about him. )

<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
<span class=“Bold”>JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.</span></span>

<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
<span class=“Bold”>Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.</span></span>

<span class=“Italics”>JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.</span>

The scene would have to be reshot to do that. There's no way it would work...

But as Hardcore Legend said, Darth Vader probably won't be in MagnoliaFan's edit.

Right now I have 5 different ways laid out to deal with the Qui-Gon thing, with varying difficulties. (all feasable for me, listed from easiest to hardest)
1. If the cut scene is on the dvd - easy enough.
2. Cut the reference outright as Qui-Gon already has another influencial voice over in my version of III anyway.
3. Widen the shot after Obi-Wan says "Qui-Gon!" and have him appear standing next to Yoda.
4. Fake the voice over scene with Yoda using cleverly edited Liam Neeson samples from his body of work and also include #3.
5. Have Liam ADR dialogue similar to the script, then include #3 as well.

And Rik's title on the cover is a creative decision that he was made privy to a few months ago.
While Revenge of the Sith is a cool sounding title, there's no real motivations for revenge.
Maul may say "At last we will have revenge", and Ki Adi does say they are extinct, but then the only backstory we have pre-Maul for their situation is Sidious killing Plagueis. Killing each other isn't the best motivation for revenge on someone else.
Originally I was going to keep the title, trim out the dialogue about Plagueis being killed by his apprentice and change the dialgue in the Mace scene:
"Anakin... Darth Plagueis was real!"
"Real?"
"He was my master... before I killed him."
to
"He was my master... before THEY killed him."
Then there is a precedence... But that exchange of dialogue was cut from the film.

You say you have Qui Gonn dialogue elsewhere. Watching the film, I thought it would be brilliant to have him do a voiceover (ala Obi Wan) when Yoda is laying down on the floor of the Senate looking up. Because, I don't understand why he decided to quit at that point. Well, I do, but the falling cape just doesn't impress.

In case none of you knew, ROTS made $108 million this weekend, plus the 50 on Thursday, putting it at $158 million + for 4 days. WOW!

I hope it beats Phantom Menace.

If it turns out anything like the Obi-wan sample you sent, that should work out nicely.

"5. Have Liam ADR dialogue similar to the script, then include #3 as well."

"Is that...legal?"

I didn't quite get that reference. What does it mean? (To you, anyways.) I kinda wondered as to what prompted his "Into exile, I must go" line, so in that respect, you are right - putting the Qui-gon V.O. there would be an excellent idea.

BTW, MF. When you get to the lava part, please cut out all the shots showing Obi-wan and Anakin standing on the raft and droid. The close-ups are fine, but the parts showing them hovering around and floating are ridiculous. Hell, I'd almost consider having Obi-wan jumping directly from the huge arm down to the "high ground", but there's some crucial dialogue in the middle of all that.

It doesn't make any sense to me, really. Much like the Yoda meditaiting scene didn't make any sense until I found that there was a deleted section there. It just seems like there was something intended to be there, but is missing.

Anyone else notice the dialogue change on Mustafar? When Padme says "Obi Wan told me terrible things" and Anakin replies "What things?" His mouth moved really weird. I watched it again yesterday and realized that he originally said "Like What". Probably something they had changed in post.

I was really bothered by Yoda just giving up so easily, but having the clones swarm in and attack while he is defenseless and tired makes it work. This also shows that Palpatine leaves nothing to chance. MagnoliaFan, is your version of ROTS going to be like TPM or AOTC? Your TPM felt like a completely different film to me, while AOTC felt like an improved version of the same film.

For those who are bothered by the reversed Spanish on EP I and II, if anyone knows how to get a dvd release with a 5.1 language track other than English, Spanish, French, or German, PM it my way. I have no problem buying them. I've looked on and off for a few years. The above is all I can ever locate... and the reversed Spanish sounds best from the above sources.

Oh, and for those who think the reversed dialogue sounds fake/different, take the line in Attack of the Clones where the alien says "The debate is over! Now we need this clone army!" and reverse it. You may be a little surprised with what you find.

You should call episode 3 "Rise of the Empire", MagnoliaFan. That'd be a cool name.

Really? Maybe... Ben Burtt was sick that day? Or feeling lazy?

I really like that one, except when you abbreviate it, the impulse is to call it "Empire"...
That causes a little problem.

That's true. I didn't think about that.
