Enter a scene early, get out late

I enjoy watching The Phantom Editor's edits of Ep. I and II, especially listening to his commentaries. In Ep. I, TPE talks about how one of the biggest failures of that movie was that a lot of scenes violated the "Enter late, leave early" principle of film editing.

When he cut to the invasion right after ol what's-his-face said "This can only mean one thing - invasion", I thought of ESB when Reikaan says "We'd better start the evacuation" and BAM! it cuts to the Imperial March and the approaching SSD. Fantastic. It strikes a perfect note, and that is exactly what TPE brough back with his "invasion" cut.

I wonder how Lucas' prequel-era editors would have handled certain OT moments like "evacuation".

Interesting point.  One of the things I noticed as I was looking at the shooting script for ROTJ was that it had a good handful of scenes where people are waiting for shuttles to land, or walking across sets on their way to other sets or hanging around in sandstorms.

I recently made the criticism of Jedi that it was too slow paced.  I am taking that back to a degree.  In a rough cut form, it could have been much worse.

We already know the answer to that question:  Han would step on Jabba's tail, jawas would do a 3-stooges routine, there'd be extended dance numbers with characters from Monsters Inc, etc.

I think George should have made one of the six episodes a musical. That would have been cool. I'd say ROTS would work best for that. I am sure it would have been an improvement too.

Yeah, I'd love to hear Darth Vader's "I'm On Fucking Fire!  Help!" song.  Priceless.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Wow, that would be pretty sweet. The song could start off with singing, [opera voice]"Ouch! My limbs! You stupid son of a bitch, you cut off my limbs! I thought you were my brother, but I think you slept with my wife and now you cut off my limbs! Help! Now I am on fire! I hate you so much![/opera voice] Actually, it would be a duet with Obi-Wan singing things like, "I loved you! Why? Why? Why? Oh my brother Anakin why! You were the choosen one! You were my brother! You were my best friend! I loved you! Why!"

Anyone who doesn't see how this could be pure gold, and put Star Wars back on the map as something unique and beautiful is completely void of any artistic taste whatsoever! I say we start a new petition to have ROTS remade for Broadway.

Any actor who has the balls to sing a rousing operatic solo while on fire and limbless deserves a Tony in my book!

Really? How did I miss that? I have seen MP and the Holy G millions of times. You are not talking about the Black Knight bit are you? Because I am pretty sure he wasn't singing any opera.

I was joking... hoping to evoke pictures of Hayden sitting there in the flames, his arm burned off, saying "it's only a flesh wound!".

Yeah, Kenobi did sleep with his wife. Which explains Luke and Leia. I mean, seriously, how could that Anakin wuss ever actually father children? Either it was Kenobi or it was Yoda or it was another immaculate conception.

In episode 7, I'm sure Obi-Wan's ghost will explain that he actually meant "betrayed me, his closest friend, and murdered me by breaking my heart."

The reality of the situation as much as it pains me to say it, is George Lucas competence as a filmaker ended a long time ago.  And now Spielberg joins him with War of the Worlds and Indy 4.

There is a slight possibility Spielberg has another good film or 2 in him.

I would not trust Lucas with any level of star wars continuity at this point whether it be comic book, video game, novel, cartoon or film.

And those small films of his he has been talking about since 1983 i'm still waiting for those, while he rehashes star wars and indiana jones to were they are just crap series now.  Only 50% of the star wars series and Indiana Jones series are good.

When was the last time he brought in new writers and allowed them to do their own thing. The Genddy animated series.

If any more star wars films are made they should be made by Different writers or directors than Lucas or any one currently employed by LFL.  The Clone Wars 2008 cartoon could have been good if Filoni was given free reign with the writers and George only took on an executive producers role.

The live action show will suffer the same fate if lucas runs the whole show.

Hilarious. Skyjedi inspired me to look at GL's imdb page - since 1983, it's basically all SW with a helping of Indiana Jones. And this "Red Tails"? Read this imdb synopsis of it:

The story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American pilots to fly in a combat squadron during World War II.

Hmmm. What does this remind me of...there was some movie...oh, that's right -

THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN!!!

What's next from Lucas? The Milan Indians? Andy Dufresne's Escape? Balboa vs. Creed?
