Encountering errors trying to burn a DVD from a VIDEO_TS folder

I've managed to rip a fan film dvd I received that was having some issues on my current PC dvd drive. With some trial and error my wife's laptop, I ripped all of the files to my hard drive so that I can play it without problem from that hard drive. The problem is when I play it from the DVD, the second half of the DVD stalls on the DL disc. So that leads me to believe it's a disc problem or incompatability with my disc drive because it will play fine on my HD. Also, as I've said every once and awhile my wife's laptop had trouble reading the files. But I did manage to get them all copied and onto the drive.

BUT when I try to burn a new DL disc, it keeps giving me this error:

"There was a formatting error in the VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS folders. Please check the folders and try again."

Well, I don't have an AUDIO_TS folder in the VIDEO_TS directory, nor is there one in the root directory. I've tried adding blank AUDIO_TS directories separately in both the VIDEO_TS and root directories with no luck. Same error when trying to burn.

Further details on the error say:

"Sense: 00 ASC: 00 ASCQ: 00 (Command: 00)
-----------------------------------------
Px.dll: 2.6.55.500
Pxdrv.dll: 1.1.60.0
PxMas.dll: 2.6.55.500
PxWave.dll: 2.6.55.500
pxwma.dll: 1.0.0.3

So any ideas on how to fix this so that I can reburn? Sounds like one of the files has some incorrect data? Maybe I can use PgcEdit or another program to fix this? and if so, where would I look in the program to find the problem? Sorry for the stupid questions, but I'm a total newb at authoring DVDs for the most part.

First of all, I would try to run it through DVDShrink, or VobBlanker. BTW is it an image or a directory containing VOB files ?
And of course, the AUDIO_TS folder may NOT be in the VIDEO_TS folder, they should be on equal level (root).

It's a directory with the VOB, and the rest of the other files. So it's not an image exactly. But I agree there shouldn't be an AUDIO_TS inside the VIDEO_TS folder. But for some reason the error seems to indicate that perhaps the file config is saying otherwise OR it means it in the sense that it could be either the VIDEO or AUDIO folders or BOTH. So I'm guessing there should be a way to correct this?

This probably doesn't help but you can give it a try. Download IfoEdit, open an ifo file in your VIDEO_TS directory and press the "Get VTS sectors" button (at the bottom). Then try to burn again.

Edit: Are you burning with Nero?

I'm using Sonic's RecordNow. I did some more research and came up with this post:

I have no idea if I can download the trial for DVDRemake Pro and fix this issue or not. Anyone know if you can save with the trial version? This almost sounds like a similar issue to what Jambe had with Returning to Jedi. Sort of anyway. With that DVD, it would just skip to the beginning at about the mid way point. Seems there were two layer breaks so that caused the issue. In this case, it would seem something to do with there not being enough chapters as the mid point of the film. Maybe.

Maybe you can make an image with PgcEdit. It shows you all the layerbreak options and you can select the one you like.

Make sure this is checked:

None of them seem to work. and that software won't save in demo mode. argh.

Can you give me a run through beginning to end of what I should do with PCGEdit? I've got the settings as you showed me, but I have no idea what I'm doing with the layer breaks. And it keeps telling me the dvd drive letter isn't set.

What program in demo mode?

In pgcedit you can select the path for imgburn to burn the image when it's created. I never do that.
I'm going to make an image of Jambe Davdar's Returning to Jedi.

Open pgcedit. Press the button on the top left.

Go to your VIDEO_TS folder and press "ok". Pgcedit will scan the files. After scanning press "close".

Press the burn button (don't worry nothing's getting burned yet). Press "ok" when a message pops up (about the 32k stuff).

Then it should look like this. You can select the output path (a different hdd is best).
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/7859/clipboard04mh0.jpg

Press "ok" and the layerbreak options will appear. The light blue one is the current layerbreak as it is marked in the ifo file by the creator. The dark blue one is the one I currently selected. To remove the existing one select it and press "seamless cell". If you select a different one you see the previous one is not light blue anymore. You can now select the chapter point you want as layerbreak and press "ok" (double click to view the chapter).

If there are indeed to few chapters to create a layerbreak I don't know how it will look. Maybe the list will be empty? Or you will get some other message...

Pgcedit is now creating the ISO/Image file. You can burn this file with ImgBurn to your disc.

I can't get the layer break screen to come up. It keeps telling me:

"Can't find a suitable cell for the layer break!

Try to change the order of the titlesets with DVD -> Remap Titlesets, or remove some unnecessary material.

Note for expert users:
Given the minimal ISO file size (414938 sectors) and the capacity of your DL DVD+R, the LB must be between absolute sectors 2055040 and 2086912 in the ISO. The absolute starting sector of the VOB files of the Title domain of VTS 2 is 782090. The LB cell must begin between relative sectors 1272950 and 1304822 in that domain. Therefore, try to split cells 13 of VTST 2, 1 TTN 1 (1:29:01) Title 2."

Any ideas what's going on? I'm guessing this is the same reasont that I cant get RecordNow to burn the files to the DVD player without the error posted above in my initial post.

What I would do in your case :

1) Open the directory in VobBlanker, set the new destination directory and click process ! Then watch the result in the new directory with some software DVD player, if it behavies as expected try to burn it.
2) If it doesn't work, open the directory in DVDShrink, set the result type to DVD9 in the preferences dialog box, and click on Backup. Then watch the result in the new directory with some software DVD player, if it behavies as expected try to burn it.
3) If it didn't work open FixVTS, and "drag-and-drop" to it's window the file VIDEO_TS.VOB, select "FULL DVD" and click OK. Do NOT select "No backup" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The original directory will be in FixVTS_Backup, the new files will be in the main VIDEO_TS directory. Try to watch it now, if it's OK try to burn it.

Usually at least one of these programs work for me (all are freeware). If it still doesn't work, I would redo the whole DVD, which is a LOT of work, so first try these steps and post here the results.

AND - what do you have on the DVD, only the film or also some bonus stuff ?

But none of these programms adds chapter points so I guess it doesn't make any difference...

Yes, he will probably need to split the cell 13, but I think he should first try these progs. Only in the case they don't help, I would try splitting the cell or maybe adding an empty cell (with PGCEdit).

Well, I tried VobBlanker. No luck. I tried DVDShrink, but instead of wasting more time making a dual layer version in DVDShrink I opted for a single layer version. I figured with all the trouble I've had, I'd have better luck that way...and low and behold it worked.

Would it have worked as a dual layer in DVD Shrink? Maybe...I was just running out of patience trying to fix it. If I ever run across this problem again (I sure hope I dont) I'll try DVDShrink with the DL option and see what happens.

Thanks so much for your help guys. At least one suggestion worked so I'm very much appreciative of all your help. I learned a few things, granted I'm still a bit hazy on what it all means. That stuff is so complicated to try and just jump in to fix one small issue.

I'm glad at least one thing worked.
