Empire Strikes Back Laserdisc

Does anyone know the details of the laserdisc version of TESB which is missing a few seconds? I have heard about this from many sources, but don't know what is missing. I have the 1984 stereo extended play fullscreen version and the 1990 widescreen version. The fullscreen version is clocked at 120 min and the widescreen version is clocked at 124min. I noticed the fullscreen version is sped-up to shorten the running time, but nothing is missing from the film. Does anyone know what the deal is?

Yes, this error was present in the first production run of the 1993 Definitive Collection set. Several seconds were missing from the scene where Leia is welding and Han starts talking to her. They quickly fixed the error so the sets with the error have become something of a collector's item, but I wouldn't be one of them myself. You might consider getting a better set than the time compressed fullscreen version, doesn't do the films justice at all.

Thanks for the info. Yeah the fullscreen version I have is pretty bad. The widescreen one is great.

Time compressed? Really? They actually sped it up by a few frames per second? That's weird. Have any other movies ever done that? And I don't mean for the sake of trying to achieve some sort of creative endeavor.

Warner experimented with this a bit in the early days of VHS and Beta. They released a version of Superman that was time compressed, and it was a bloody mess. Most PAL videos and DVDs are also time compressed by 4%, because film is 24 fps and PAL video is 25fps, so they just ramp up the telecine to avoid annoying flicker problems.

I don't have enough inputs on my receiver to handle an LD player, unless I disconnect my CD changer from its optical input, which I don't plan on doing anytime soon.

Wouldn't recommend it. Might hurt. Besides, there's enough of a market out there in LD collectors that you could easily sell hotter titles on eBay and make back some money if you owned any you wanted to get rid of.

I was thinking of the horrible Dolph Lundgren B-movie "I Come in Peace" where the alien baddie shot CD sized discs that sliced people apart. Very effective.

The Empire Strikes Back laserdisc that Mr. Coffee is talking about sounds a lot like the CED version of the film.

Does anyone else remember CED disc’s or videodisc’s as they were also called?

Can't say as how I do. Sorry.

CED’s were like laserdisc’s but instead of the player reading the movie with a laser, the player read the movie with a needle like a record. The disc’s came in hard plastic sleeves which had to be placed into the player to get the disc out. Once the player had removed the disc it would spit out the movie sleeve. The disc’s could only hold two hours. One hour for each side. CED’s were only around in the early and mid 1980's.

Can't say I have either. You can use an analog needle to get a video signal?
