Empire Of Dreams Review

I looked but I couldn't find a thread where everyone was discussing what they thought of the special on A&E.

Well, I thought it was really good. I realize that it will be longer on the DVD set, but from what we saw I think that this is going to be a very good documentary to have. I'm sure that there were things that A&E purposely didn't show so that it didn't impact sales of the DVD set.

The one thing that I thought was really interesting is that all of the clips from the films were of the original versions. I thought these didn't exist anymore. Seeing the original opening crawl after all these years was really interesting. I'm just sorry that they didn't show all of it. But I can guess why they didn't. That would make it too easy for someone to re-insert it back into the film. I also noticed that whatever print of the originals that they were using looked pretty good. I'm guessing that those clips were from the cleaned up prints from 97 before the CGI stuff was added.

I wish that there had been a discussion of deleted scenes or unfilmed footage. That may be on the DVD set. At least I hope so. I don't mean complete deleted scenes but a quick discussion on what was filmed that wasn't used for one reason or another.

It was also cool to see some of the lost cut footage.

I wish that Empire and Jedi had gotten more screen time, but again, that will be on the DVD. All in all it was a great two hours to spend watching TV. It definately made me want to watch the films again.

I had that same reaction.
I also liked some of the actor points.
- Billy Dee Williams got something jammed through his toe during shooting of that Sarlaac scene.
- Hamill was picking up Radio 1 and the Rolling Stones at times during Dagobah shooting though an earpiece.
- Frank Oz dropped Yoda's head during construction

I concur, seeing the original...in all of its poor quality glory had something special to it as well. I'd never thought I'd say that, as I am a huge A/V buff loving HD and 5.1 surround, but it did. It reminded me of the first time I saw them. While I'd love to see the cleaned up/remastered.revamped picture and sound, it was special seeing it as a golden oldie. And seeing how it almost never was. It was an excellent documentary.
16 years I wait and this is what I get???

The material about the making of the original trilogy was definitely fascinating stuff. It was nice to see the original crew talk about the days so long ago when they were literally making movie history. I know it was truncated, but according to Kevin Burns, even the full version doesn't touch how much stuff Lucas still has in the vaults, so there's still lots of footage from back then that hasn't seen the light of day.

But that's not my problem with it. Described as a warts and all documentary, everything post original trilogy was the same ol' Lucas company line, about "nows my chance to do the stuff I couldn't do back then" (paraphrasing) didn't touch any thing even remotely controversial about the special edition or 2004 changes. Not even a person questioning it, or the validity of Lucas' denial of the originals. Maybe not everyone or even the majority feels that way, but certainly enough people to make it at least worthy of mentioning? Or is it just more of sweeping it under the rug, so now when people see the Star Wars Trilogy 2004, that's just all there is to the OT and that's it. That last chunk was just an advert for Lucas and Ep 3. Pathetic.
The original Star Wars trilogy: Our cultural history deserves to be preserved and should be available to the public like all great works of art!

The heck they were. The opening sequence was definitely doctored.

"Noticing a lot of the original edition shots are remastered in the doc... (evil grin)"

Agreed. It's subtle. but it's there.

Too bad they didn't play the entire crawl, At least to the last line. I coulda done something with it.

I enjoyed the documentary. I can't wait to see the entire piece on the DVD set.

Did anybody happen to catch the VH1 special? Will that be included on the DVD set? That was pretty cool too, only caught it half way in, so I'm a little PO'd about that. But it was pretty cool to watch it and seeing the old footage as well, just like in Empre of Dreams.
