im not saying that the actors hate working with blue screens... but im sure they didnt think it would be used as much as it was in the PT...
after all a great deal of the movie is done with some sort of blue screen or blue boxes...

I don't CARE if they are bored, or if they think star wars sucks, or if they can't act against blue screen! That's the job they chose to do, to ACT no matter how insanely ridiculous the situation might be, that's what they're getting their money from, so stop complaining and just do the job properly. Peter O'Toole refuse to act in Tron when he found out he would have to act against bluescreens and greenscreens and whatever, that's a ridiculous primadonna behaviour I hate about those kind of actors. Sir Alec Guiness bad-mouthed Star Wars on every ocasion he mentioned it, just as Marlon Brando did with Superman... ok so WHY did they agree on acting on those movies?

I would have to disagree with you on that. Actors may not necessarily know what they are getting into when they sign for a movie. I really don't think it is right have to act against a bluescreen. Their job is not to only to act in any situtation, it is also the directors job to create a workable environment. If you're acting against a bluescreen you have nothing to drive your performance and your fire is lost.

Oh, and Marlon Brando is just like that. He pisses of every director. He referred to the director of the Score (Frank Oz) as "Miss Piggy" and refused to work with him. De Niro directed all of his scenes. He also refused to wear pants, thus all his scenes were shot from the waist up.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

I think Sir Alec resented that a lot people from the 1980's onwards only really associated him with the Star Wars films - and was the major topic of converstion whenever a fan met and talked to him.

This is a man who has a lifetime of distinguised acting work - from the Ealing comedies (which I urge anyone to watch for his comedial timing and delivery), to Kafka, A Passage To India, Laurence Of Arabia, Cromwell, Bridge On The River Kwai and Tinker, Talior, Soldier Spy to name but a few.

I know oojason, and I know it would be frustrating for him being only recognized for an acting job he disliked so much. I still don't know why he accepted staring on Star Wars. He really needed the money so bad?

But what I mean is, actors are paid a whole lot of money to act. I think it's unfair when they complain about the job, and you clearly see it's not such a bad job. Ewan McGregor is getting paid to act against bluescreen all the time and make it belivable. I do not like the way GL directs his movies now, 10 minutes of principal photography under a bluescreen and 2 years of post-production, BUT... they all knew what it was all about, and being actors, they gotta know how to act no matter how difficult the situation might be.

Reminds me of a story I heard about Hitchcock's Birds. I can't recall the name of the actress, but there's a scene where she hears noises coming from the second floor of her house, and she goes up, opens the door, and the birds atack her. When she was on set to do the scene, she asked Hitchcock: "Why? Why would she go up there? Why should I do this?", and he replied "Because I'm telling you to do it."
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Hey folks, here's my first attempt of recutting the new 'Emperor's Phone Call' sequence, to bring it closer to the original dialogue. Please don't mind the audio transition, I know it's a horrible job. Admittedly I'm just starting to teach myself editing, because I'm fed up with the stuff LFL is "trying to push on us".

Not bad at all. The way to fix your drop off problem is to either use the ambient noise from the Original ESB mixes or isolate the channel for the ambient noise from the new mix. Have this play the entire time, not edited. Then the sound will not fall off. Also, if you could get access to the ESB: SE soundtracks on CD, they prove a great asset as I was able to do about the first 10 minutes of the film with Williams original score.

WOW good job Sifo-Dyas. That does bring the exchange back to how it should have been done.

However after seeing that scene it appears that McDiarmid was asleep or on heavy doses of pain killers when he recorded that scene.

Also that the make-up crew, probably unuccustomed to ACTUALLY having to do latex work after years of being shunted aside in favour of the CGI crews, have completely forgotten how to do their jobs.

Gee, I don't know why GL just didn't use a CGI Emperor considering that he has stated that he hated the limitations of Latex and puppets and that CG 'just seems more real' to him.

Give me the Clive Monkey-Woman Reville Emperor over this stilted crap any day. It's amazing but the Reville-voiced composite actually does a more convincing job than McDiarmid. That's not really fair I guess as McDiarmind did a fantastic job matching the OOT TESB Reville-monkey-woman with his wonderful performance in ROTJ.

This is just further proof of how much Lucas sucks and how poory executed, not to mention totally unnecessary, all these arbitrary changes to our beloved saga are.

I always wondered why the Special Edition poster for Empire had ROTJ Palpatine on it...too bad the finally-added version looks nothing like he does in ROTJ.

I loved the original Emperor. It was one of my favorite scenes in my favorite movie. Go figure.

I saw the new Emperor scene. It is a huge improvement in my opinion. Its easy to tell that the chimp eyed women is not the same person as the Emperor in all the other movies. Ian Mcdarmid also has a much cooler voice then Clive Revel did. Ian Mcdarmid is the emperor not a chimp eyed women. The new dialog also enhances the scene. It will probably help connect with Revenge of the Sith.

Truly you are an apologist of the highest order.

"Who are you to question His will?"
"He is the Creator and He can do whatever He wants to His galaxy."
"Everything He does He does for a reason."
"All of His decisons are divine and unquestionable."
"Every one of His creations is perfect and full of unknowable majesty and wonderment."
"This was all part of His plan from the beginning."
"He is just testing our loyalty and devotion to Him."

Sound familiar?

Even when evidence is staring you in the face you retreat back into the same corner deifying the man as if he actually knows what he's doing.

Blind faith just means you've got your eyes closed Jimbo.

The original Emperor was awesome. Creepy, mysterious...

The new version looks like a French guy named Maurice who sells balloons.

Hey, thanks for the advice. I hope the SE soundtracks are still available, I'll see to it that I buy all three of them (just in case I need more SE music scores).
I do own the "StarWars Trilogy - The original soundtrack anthology" set, so eventually I'll find the required piece of music there.

I agree that the performance of Ian McDiarmid and the folks who did his makeup could have been a lot better, however I still wanted to experiment with the scene to see if it can be brought up to a standard that will be enjoyable even for the average oot hardliner. Another further going idea was to photoshoply pull the emeperor's hood deeper into his face (much like in the prequels or in the beginning of RotJ) but considering the opacity problem and my lack of owning the background matte painting, this will be almost non-achievable for an amateur like me. What I could do is perhaps (like someone else suggested in another thread) darken the shadows on his face so you don't see his eyes (thus covering up the 'stoned look'), yet even that is one hell of a job to do, so we will see if I'm capable of getting this to work.

I just downloaded your Emperor's Phone Call edit there.
It obviously could be improved by what you just responded to.

But as far as where the cuts are to be made, it's good. Assuming the music can be worked out, the scene is much better than the DVD version.
And yes, it would be great to have his eyes masked by shadow.

But great job, buddy!

My stance on revising fan edits.
