I just picked up the 1994 NTSC laserdisc, which claims to have more footage than HBO originally aired. I'll take a break from Photoshopping storyboards for Ghostbusters: Ectoplasmic Residue this weekend and get this on DVD.

I also have a dvd, from laser disc version. If memory serves, none of the standup was
cut for HBO broadcast. Perhaps a musical number was edited out for the HBO show,
but the standup stuff is the same. The BUSBOYS were the opening act for Eddies
tour that year.

Does anyone know what format it was originally recorded in? I'd assume it was recorded in NTSC format but I've looked very closely at the PAL VHS I have and I can't see any of the signs of NTSC to PAL conversion, it's interlaced and there's no juddering or the half-framing effects of framerate conversion, so either it was recorded in PAL or they had some damn excellent conversion process happening.

I have the laserdisc also and have burned it to dvd. I used to have the VHS years ago (when it first came out in the early 80's). I'm quite certain the two are identical. I used to know that concert word-for-word back then.....

Tell me about it, i was the first among my friends to have a vcr, and my buddies wanted
to watch my HBO recording CONSTANTLY, so i quickly tired of the concert, but its a classic.
I recall seeing bootlegs in various dvd stores in Times Square, and the owners kept trying
to tell me they were 'official' releases from Canada, of all places. HAHA

Yeah.. I have no idea why they haven't released it on DVD??!! I thought when they released RAW on dvd, they'd release it then, not sure why they didn't. BTW... I went to see Eddie Murphy when he was doing the RAW tour (in Richmond, VA). It was soooo freakin' funny! The Richmond concert was MUCH better than the actual recorded concert!!

BTW... I also have the Best of Eddie Murphy on LD. They did release a "best of" Eddie Murphy on DVD, but it's not the same as the Laserdisc/VHS release. Most of the skits were the same, but there are some different skits that are not on the DVD release.

From what i heard, from a few sources is that the rights have now reverted back to Eddie,
and he is not interested in releasing this, because of the content. I guess a lot of it would
be considered 'politcally incorrect' these days.

Cant imagine any other reason for this not being released along with RAW, as i think
his would sell a few more copies than RAW.

That's correct. Eddie holds the rights now and apparently wants to downplay his past raunchier humor in favor of the more family-friendly Eddie that's been making films like Dr. Doolittle and Haunted Mansion for the last decade. It's a shame he's turned his back on the personality/humor that made him so famous to begin with. I miss the Eddie Murphy of 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop and his brief run on SNL.

If this is true, that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! This is what put Eddie Murphy on the map!! Every Eddie Murphy fan that I know are fans because of things like Delirious, 48 Hours, Trading Places, B.H. Cop, etc., not movies like Daddy Daycare, Haunted Mansion, etc.

I'm sure that we'll see it on dvd sooner or later......

Whats so nuts about that? This is one live concert video, not all his previous films
we are talking about. And nothing in ANY of those films is as edgy as that standup
routine. The man is a lot older, not a 21 year old who did that standup routine.
Its not uncommon for artists of all types to want to distance themselves from
their earlier material. Happens with bands as well.

Well the difference is that Eddie holds the rights to Delirious and not the other films he did, so if he wants to keep it from being released on DVD then unfortunately that's his choice. I think the main reason is because of the very non-politically correct stuff in it, specifically the jokes about gays and AIDs as I recall (been 2 yrs since I last saw it). It's a damn shame that political correctness has influenced Eddie Murphy himself. I think the last edgy movie he did was Metro or Distinguished Gentleman, back in the mid 90s. After that it was all the damn kiddy movies like Dr. Doolittle, Nutty Professor, Daddy Day Care, etc. Sigh...

I guess at the end of the day, people change. As much as i'd love to have a pristine
dvd copy, i can respect an artists rights, and viewpoint. It's possible its not a worry
about current political correctness, but that his feelings about the material has
changed.

It would be interesting to get Eddie on record regarding this, instead of all
our own conjecture. ;-)

just thought i would resurrect this thread one more time to see if anyone's finished a LD preservation of this. I believe Rick did, but i haven't seen him in a while...

I've got a copy of this which I think is sourced from Laserdisc, but I can't be certain, however the picture and sound are very good if anyone's interested.
