Neat! It's of no consequence to me because it's my favorite movie of all time in either edition (I bawl my EYES out...) but it's cool that he just kinda put it out there like that. Can't wait! I know this'll make purists pretty happy.

I hope it is the case. That will be amazing! Hopefully directors are finally getting the point that nobody really wants out of place modern day tinkering in their older films.

I have to say I didn't mind the added Halloween scene where the mom picks up Elliot's siblings, but all of the CG enhancements were pretty atrocious.

I like the original better too but I think that once the SE is done, it should be released as well (and there were HD broadcasts of the SE, so they do have an HD master for it already, so no additional cost would be involved). The general opinion may be that people don't care for the SE, but I'm sure you could find someone who likes the SE and would like to have the option of seeing it in HD.

But it's definitely still more logical to release the original only than the SE only.

featuring the theatrical version is the way to go! *thumbs up*

it's important to feature the original sound mix of course. and foreign releases shall get their original sound mix as well. it's part of movie history.

I hope E.T.'s Blu release blows SW out of the water!  I hope some would buy E.T. just to prove a point to Lucas... though I would buy it anyway.

I've never seen the Special Edition. I never wanted to after being bored to death with the original version.

 I'm one of six people who don't like ET, so I don't have a dog in this fight, but with all the space on the Blu-ray it would be cool to have both versions preserved, although perhaps Spielberg would rather try and put the genie back in the proverbial bottle if he truly regrets the SE.

I'd have no objection to him releasing both versions on blu ray.  But if he is only going to release one,  make it the original.

I don't care for E.T. either, but the fact that Spielberg resents doing the SE has to be good for something....;)

The bit that worries me is the "digital restoration" of Raiders. I wasn't a fan of the original Lowry cleanup and tweaks made at that point...so since the CGI cliff was rejected...what exactly did they do?

I didn't even know there was an SE of ET...

All I knew was that they censored a few bits because of 9-11.

But I'm another one of those six who didn't like the movie, so... (except for the first half-hour or so)

The SE has a couple new scenes, enhanced effects in others, changes a piece of dialog about looking like a "terrorist" (changed to "hippie", I think) and replacing the guns of the federal agents with walkie-talkies.

Love the fact that he's just releasing the original, which I'm a big fan of (never saw the SE).  I'll definitely be buying this one.

Raiders is being done by the same outfit that did Gladiator (the remaster, not the original), Saving Private Ryan, and Minority Report. All are stunning on Blu-ray.

I have very high hopes for Indiana Jones on Blu-ray, and unlike another upcoming release, I'll be buying the set on day one, whenever that is.

I'll get Indiana Jones on Blu-Ray, too!  The only thing that bugs me is the lack of the dust on the glass that was originally seen.  Harmy? *bats eyelids pleadingly*

Oh wow E.T. on Blu-Ray! I'm glad Spielberg is using the theatrical cut. It ought to look fantastic especially for lovers of that movie. With luck, Jaws will come soon too; I know it's already in the works.

Out of curiosity, Jay, where did you find the information about Raiders being done by that outfit? In any case, that's fantastic news! Does that mean that the relatively new and unreleased-to-DVD transfer (which restored the non-CGI cliff) made for digital broadcast will not be used for the Blu-Ray? Whatever transfer used, theatrical versions of the Indy movies equals a first-day purchase for me. Hopefully, no wires (or reflections) are fixed, as promised.
