I was hoping that it would appear in the deleted scenes from ROTJ, but it was left out of the current Blu Ray release.

but a couple of lines were trimmed from Boushh's dialogue when 'he' pulls a thermal detonator and threatens JABBA something along the lines of "They'll be scraping your stinking carcass off the walls', could be fairly easily reinserted with a few lengthened cuts and subtitling , as it is Boushh seems to say a whole line of dialogue with only a few syllables, C-3po doesn't have to translate anything further, and it lends more to Jabba's response of "This Bounty Hunter is my kind of scum!"

Maybe it's a false memory, but I remember seeing a very early trailer when it was still being billed as REVENGE of THE JEDI,  that contained that line of BOUSHH's dialogue?? of course I was a very impressionable 12 year old at the time.

Regardless of whether it was a deleted scene or not, that would make a good edit. Jabba's liking of Boushh seems less abrupt and more plausible. Maybe the whole sequence could be recaptioned, as some of the text does seem a tad weak.

I've noticed in recent years that Return of the Jedi is very poor in iconic imagery. Star Wars and Empire had all these wonderful snapshot moments. The only ones in Jedi were recycled.

These are also great ideas for ROTJ. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. ROTJ lacks grandeur. Their is little sense of impressiveness to an audience. It's cinematography too isn't nearly as visually striking as SW and ESB.

Okay, now to get back on topic: I'd like to see more use of the top and bottom guns of the Falcon... in ROTJ, as it is, it always appears as if the Falcon only has one gun, shooting from the front almost. It would be nice to see the Falcon flying through a bunch of TIEs, with the gunners taking them out, which would make the Falcon appear even more badass in the big space battle, since it could attack in all directions, regardless of which direction Lando is flying. Just a thought.

It might be a HUGE stretch to pull it off, but if there could be Rebel Troops placed in the seats of the Falcon's guns (similar to Luke and Han sitting in the seats in ANH) that would be cool to see too. But it might be easier to just have the Falcon's guns shown firing from exterior shots.

Now that the Blu-rays are released, and that the rebel gunners are shown using the turrets in the deleted scenes, perhaps this old idea of mine can become a reality for ROTJ:R or in anyone else's fanedit!

i've been trying to experiment with ROTJ and these new scenes that have surfaced. the sandstorm is quite fun to play with, with really REALLY rough dialogue bastardised from the cockpit conversation in the alternative scene dropped in.

what has challenged me though is trying to the ewok content down, whilst using some of the corridor battle footage to boost the pace of an alternative battle.

my conclusion however, is, are the ewoks actually that horrendous? is there presence that sickly? what always annoyed me was how they were just shoved in your face, and how the film ends with them, as if they are just as essential as the three heroes.

in the battle of endor, we see them overcome the imperials, which is, stupid. but what is they could be portrayed as just offering a distraction, so the rebels can get another shot at attacking the base?

in my ewokless plan, i was considering that leia could discover the "secret entrance" when she falls off her speeder. the obi wan talk would appear on endor, to spur luke to confront vader (as oppose to the leia conversation), and the corridor fight would be used to fill out a second attack after they get captured.

I freely admit that this is rather insane nitpicking and a massive hypothetical workload for a purely aesthetic reason, and I know everyone who hated the PT jedi robes will disagree..........but:

One thing I actually dislike in ROTJ, and always have, is Luke's costume.  I understand the symbolism of him going from white (ANH), to grey (ESB), to black in ROTJ to reflect his growth and maturity.....but to me it contradicts the more important visual element of black representing the sith and/or the darkside.

Now of course you can argue that black is supposed to represent how he is still struggling with the temptation of the darkside.....but that still rings hollow to me because if anything that should mean black on black is still too strong for his character.  Instead, I would change it to something more reflecting anakin's clothes:

http://youtu.be/0T4NGI5-D-0

Now the rotoscoping effect for that clip alone took me an hour or two which means that it'd be pretty crazy for anyone to try and do the whole thing so it's probably not viable....but I did like the result and it was fun to stretch my legs on rotoscoping again.

Author
Time

Wow! That's amazing work on the rotoscoping. I suppose non- pure black could make sense. It would be a lot of work to recolor him for the entire movie though...

Author
Time

perhaps brown robes on top of black undergarments? as he only wears the robes on tatooine, so you would get the idea, and only edit half the film?

really really impressive though!

Author

would it be too much to go the whole hog and have a more Jedi (light tan colours) for these scenes?

Looked back at my old "How I'd Redo ROTJ" post, which was full of impossible dreams. With the new deleted scenes, some don't seem so impossible anymore.

JABBAS PALACE-

Then Luke shows up, all mysterious. I thought some kind of visual to cue that Luke had changed was in order.

After the Barge goes boom, the lost Sandstorm scene is inserted. It provides another set, making the film feel bigger, and gives Han and Lando a moment to acknowledge Han's forgiving him.

The "Luke Builds a Lightsaber" scene serves the purpose of a much more mysterious introduction.

Could the sandstorm scene, with bastardized audio stolen from the actual movie, loud wind effects and music, be reinserted? Who thinks it could work?

ENDOR BATTLE:

More Ewoks die. Not a bloodbath, but we should see some get shot. We should also see some stab Stormtroopers with spears and poison blowdarts.

The shuttle the heroes came in had a small force of maybe 40-50 people shoved in the back like a Normandy lander. Let them get some action.

SPACE BATTLE:
THere should be at least one Hero Shot of the Falcon flying with all guns blazing, blasting TIE fighters. Footage was shot of soldiers in the Falcon's guns firing away. That should be used.
Footage was also shot of Madine's death, as well as a female XWing pilot. These should go back in.

Inserting the bunker scene, the new pilot closeups, and the Falcon gunners would go a long way to making the battle feel more epic.

I'd also insert shots of Jerrjerod getting status updates (although not the subplot of blowing up Endor). Could shots from those scenes be used to replace some of the reused shots of the Death Star gunners from "Star Wars?"

I've actually reconsidered more Ewoks dying. We see two die in a short time, and one even gets the most dramatic death scene in the triology up till then (more time than Biggs, Dack, or Obi got!).

When the gang is captured by the Ewoks, empty stormtrooper armor is piled next to the cooking fire.

I might build a set in my garage to get this shot!

I wouldn't change a damn thing about the Emperor or any of the scenes of him, Vader and Luke. (except that he really needs a nicer shuttle).

I need to learn to rotoscope, to slap a red Imperial logo on the Emp's shuttle in the big matte painting. Maybe some spinners.

ENDING

The camera pans up above the happy people, XWings drop fireworks in the sky, camera pans up to the stars, where, as the music crescendos, the AUDIENCE POV ITSELF is pulled into hyperspace as the credits roll. People cheer.

Is this possible? Any ideas of how to try making this shot?

^all of these ideas make sense.

for the ending, how about the celebration continues as usual, but we only see the ghosts of obiwan and yoda, luke then proceeds to burn his father afterwards, then pan up and end.

check out my idea for TPM ending, it would be quite similar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU2jga_fbnE

i think the emperors shuttle should be something COMPLETELY new, maybe something more yacht-ish like the solar sailor dooku uses?

SSWR did some mockups which follow a similar vein to your ideas, such as the stormtrooper armour and the lightspeed ending. did you ever see any?

okay, here is a ROUGH (and i mean rough) idea for an alternative dagobah opening/early scene. i was thinking perhaps placed after vader first visits the death star. this would also precede yoda dying, although the possibility of of breaking the two scenes up with some of the jabbas palace story would work.

this would follow the assumption that luke has been training since ESB, and that building his lightsaber is the final stage of his training. throughout the scene yoda would be weezing and showing signs of extreme old age. also some recoulourng/tweeking would be needed to alter lukes appearance so its less obvious where it is sourced from.

i had the idea after finishing though, that enstead of yoda giving luke the crystal, perhaps we could also see yoda's lightsaber de-constructed (assuming he had one and never lost it) so there would be an element of master-apprentice handing down.

i think the lighting could be better tweakied, so it is in almost complete darkness, so when the lighsaber is lit, the scene is flooded with green light. POW.

excuse the music, i think something more sombre would work much better in hindsight....

Wow! if this would have been done by LFL originally.....ROTJ could have had the (one of?)? most Iconic scene in the Trilogy!

and as for the music, you could use "The Levitation/Threepio's Bedtime Story" for this "scene"

Even in its rough form.....that sequence just gave me chills.  This is exactly what was missing from Luke's character development in jedi.  This is the defining moment where he stops being a farmboy playing jedi and becomes the character we see through the rest of the movie.

I completely disagree with your own criticisms actually.

1.  Don't show him deconstructing Yoda's lightsaber.  What makes the sequence so much more effective is that to a first time viewer it's not even immediately clear what's happening here.  It looks at first like it's just more telekensis training....and then when the crystal appears the music hits at just the right moment when the audience figures out what he's doing.

2.  The music is perfect.  It harkens back to Luke's failure of lifting the X-wing, and Yoda showing him what he can accomplish if he sets his mind too it.  This is his moment, his triumph, so it should parallel that scene.

I would however change it so that Yoda is watching from the side, rather than on luke's back.  It shows that Luke no longer needs yoda to litterally look over his shoulder in his training.  His master has nothing more to teach him now, and merely watches from afare at how far his pupil has come.

So help me.....somehow.....we must make this so.

Ho-ly crap that was amazing. Obviously this is going to need loads of work, but I like it a lot. It's probably worth storyboarding precisely and figuring out what new shots are needed (many, obviously). Try to avoid reusing footage from the films, and try to figure out how to transition from Vader to this scene... and from this scene to whatever comes next.

Author
Time

That would have definitely been an iconic scene. If you could make a nice version of that, I would truly be astounded.

Colour me tingled.

It would be amazing if it could be done, especially if you added a few coughs from Yoda at the end to pre-figure his illness and eventual death.

It would signal to him that his task is complete and Luke is now ready, in biblical terms,  "He must increase but I must decrease ".

I like that saber construction idea, but I do have two points of criticism. One is that I would really prefer that a lightsaber not be put together in seconds, but in long weeks and months of work. This is how I always imagined it. In the deleted scenes, from what I gathered Luke was just making some final adjustment to his saber, not actually putting it together.

The second is that it feels a little too "in-your-face", like something that we don't need to see, we just get it.

Those are my 2 cents.

Btw, if you haven't had the chance yet, take a look a look at my site and see if you can find anything interesting there.

Thought:

We don't actually need anything in Jabba's Palace until Leia & Chewie arrive. If you establish in the crawl that folks are already infiltrating the Palace, then Threepio's presence is explained. Artoo, meanwhile, we don't see until he's serving drinks on the barge. Threepio's reaction is sufficient to introduce the idea that Artoo has infiltrated the Palace, much like Lando. This opens the door for Luke & Yoda moving to the beginning of the movie without problem (seeing as he needs Artoo with him in the X-Wing).

I had concerns about how this removes the introduction to Jabba and his Palace that the droids experience, but it may still work. I'd recommend an establishing shot of "Boushh" and a chained Chewbacca walking towards the Palace before cutting to the dance inside.

The only real problem I see is that Luke will have waited an awful long time to actually ask "Is Darth Vader my father?"... and what to do about everything once they return to The Fleet. I mean, Luke's current introduction is pretty nonsensical, but how to fix it?

Empy should definitly rock a totally delux shuttle. I just don't know how to do that.

Never saw SSWR's mock up. Was it in this thread?

I don't know if I've said this before, but I think ROTJ would benefit by adding the two shots of Boba flirting with the dancers from the SE. Makes Boba a pimp, implies why he's hanging around, and makes Jabba's palace more interesting in general.

If/When I do my ROTJ fan edit, I'm gonna do that.

Author
Time

I love the lightsabre mockup. I initially thought you were avoiding showing Luke's face altogether — which could work very well, dramatically speaking, and would mean we'd be able to shoot the scene with a stand-in rather than reusing footage.

Re timdiggerm's concern: I think it's another case of where the limitations of what we do can lead to a good dramatic outcome — Luke doesn't want to believe that Vader is his father, so he's been putting off asking until it's almost too late.

The Hobbit: Roadshow Edition

Right, I actually think that works. I'm wondering if there's not a good way to restore Vader calling out to Luke (ROTJ Deleted scenes)... but instead of listening on Tatooine, he's on Dagobah, in the hut, leading right into Yoda's death.

Author
Time

It probably would be feasible to transition to Luke on Dagobah. It would also make a nice choice, to just preface the Dagobah scene in an edit with a little thing like that.

One can probably establish such a thing by just not showing the droids. Then someone could cut to a shot of Dagobah. Then move into the scene with Luke and Yoda.
