I also heard somewhere on Kaishenzu (is that spelt right Molly?) that a Scandinavian company (Future Film?) released all the DBZ movies using Toei's Dragon Box masters. I hear they may (or may not) have the Japanese stereo surround in addition to the Swedish audio, along with 1-9 using the Big Green track pitch and speed corrected to the DB source. They may be field blended NTSC-PAL conversions, but some sources say they are in pure NTSC format and are region 0. I need to know if that's true because if so, we could technically have cheaper Dragon Boxes with proper transfers and maybe the original Japanese stereo, but a worse English dub than Funi's and hardly any extras.

where on there did you hear that?

that would be cool, if true

off topic but do you think they'll ever make a jaco the galactic patrolman ova or anime?

EDIT: Now I remember! I heard it on a discussion regarding DVD availability of the Big Green dubs. I think the user was Kei (or someone along those terms) that mentioned a Scandinavian company used Toei's Dragon Box masters with the BG audio for the movies.

I want to say kei17?

Yup, sounds like him! I'm mostly into the technical stuff, so IMO, its hard to find intelligent discussions that aren't uptight fan rants on that forum. That's also why I may not be exact with names and such because I only try to find the good stuff, not uptight fan babble like 'TRUNKS WAS GAY IN GT!!" or "PAN WAS ANNOYING!".

Hopefully this thread will serve that purpose of technical discussion.

Now that I think about it, didn't Kei17 have an avatar of Videl from the 2nd Broly movie? Ether he changed it, or if its not him that said it, I think there may be another user who has the same pic (but I don't know their name).

Would anybody be interested in mass uploading any OOP DVDs of the series to myspleen?

Just finished reconstructing some Funi eps (the Garlic Jr. arc, 108-117) as they originally dubbed them.  I'll have them up on Nyaa in a few hours when they're uploaded to my seedbox.

They're up, DBZ 108-117, the first English dubbing.

Going through these episodes, and comparing the original dub with the version on the Orange Bricks and the Dragon Box, shows that not only did they replace the narration (and later reinstate the Japanese score) but they also redubbed a few characters major and minor.  I haven't compared the performances.  Also I think the BGM placement may be slightly different in some places.

The first R1 release mostly reflects this dub.  There was a missing "stay tuned for scenes from the next episode of DBZ" at the end of 114.  Also most of the previews are missing.  I took all but one (which I didn't have) from footage a contact in New Zealand provided me.  The remaining preview is from one of retroccn's rips and is noticeably lower quality (though I attempted to mask it somewhat by equalizing the soundtrack over top of it).

That's great. :)

There was a missing "stay tuned for scenes from the next episode of DBZ" at the end of 114.

Interesting you say that cause that was on the Madman volume, assuming you meant it wasn't on the R1 release.

It's not on the R1.  Well, if it's on the R4, maybe it would be better to use the R4s for audio instead of the R1s?

Wait, did you mean the edited TV number or original number? I was thinking of the edited number and I just checked 99. Not on the Madman volume, sorry.

I did have a TV3 recording of that episode as well with the missing narration, though the qualitys likely not as good.

Yeah, original number (hence the mention of Garlic Jr. in a previous post).

DBZ is a right mess, and that's just over the episodes that got the same dub in all English-speaking countries. :/

I've never seen an episode of Dragon Ball in my life. I'm a little curious on how I should start watching the series, or where to begin. Should I watch it dubbed or subbed? If dubbed, which one? Should I start with DB, or DBZ? If DBZ, should I watch DBZ or DBZ Kai?

Although I'd prefer things as accurate as possible, I understand that there is a chance certain words, phrases, and names are ingrained in the english fandom from one of the dubs that aren't in the subs (which is why Pokemon subbed is unwatchable for some people, considering the different character and attack names). I would like to avoid japanese-only terminology if it's in the minority of english works or not used much in the english fandom.

Any suggestions?

Personally, I'd watch the original DB, then switch to DBK.  DBK is a trimmer version of DBZ - and so far as it's been dubbed, it's a better dub than the DBZ dub.

There are fortunately not many changes in terms between the Japanese and English versions, and most of the differences between the R1 subs and the dub are a matter of orthography ("Freeza" vs. "Frieza" for example).

You didn't answer the questions of dub vs sub? If dub, which dub?

A question I forgot to ask, should I watch a dub of one show or arc and a sub of the other?

I generally watch sub.

For Z, all English versions base off the same scripts (except DBK, which is more accurately dubbed).

For DB, I think the Blue Water dub is from French. I only really watched in Japanese.

For GT, the Blue Water dub is the superior one, based (I think) directly on the studio translations, and adapted faithfully, unlike Funimation's major rewrite.  (DBK was dubbed by Okratron, not by Funimation proper.)

I'd recommend watching Dragon Ball in Japanese. Then Dragon Ball Z in Japanese, or Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters either in Japanese or English. The Final Chapters isn't officially translated in English yet however, so you might want to opt to watch DBZ episodes 200-291 in Japanese instead of The Final Chapters.

Dragon Ball GT isn't based on the manga, and is completely ignored by the new TV series sequel Dragon Ball Super, but if you want to watch it, I recommend either the Japanese version or the Blue Water dub.

Character names tend to be more or less the same. The hugest terminology differences lie with attack technique names, but honestly those tend to be obvious and shouldn't stop anyone from enjoying the series.

The English subtitles for the Japanese version included with Funimation's official home video releases are good stuff.

At this point I've got the UUE Tree of Might and am trying to obtain the UUE Dead Zone/World's Strongest to use to re-cut "Rock the Dragon" with.

I've got a TV edit of Ginyu Assault (Funi's first ep without Saban and Ocean), with NEP, from CNNZ, but with the recap missing; and an R4 rip of the recap (!) which for some reason is missing from the R1.  I also have the base episode from R1. So I was thinking of cutting something together.

I've got Ginyu Assault (30 minute version) rebuilt complete with NEP, except that I need to finish rebuilding the OP, and typeset the credits onto the ED.

The versions of Dead Zone and World's Strongest on the "Rock the Dragon" set may be the edited Toonami versions, which are missing lines of dialog. The individual Pioneer DVDs would be a better source to use.

No, that's not what it was about. I needed them for Rock the Dragon itself, the opening (which Funi continued to use until episode 107).

I got World's Strongest and Tree of Might UUE, and that covers all but two shots covering 2 1/8 seconds (and I don't see a problem with dropping to the RTD box for that short a length of time if I can't get Dead Zone, seeing as I already drop to RTD for the logo since I don't have the skills to reanimate it).
