Amen. When I requested this originally, I knew exactly what I would be getting if anyone had it. And when Rev came through with MBJ's transfer of his tape, I got just what I expected. And I was appreciative of it. It looks exactly as it has been described to me every time since the first time I heard about it back in the early eighties. Anyone who was hoping for better quality needs to take a minute to trace the source and passage of time. I don't know how many times it can be said that this thing's allure lies simply in its position as a footnote in Star Wars (and bootleg) film/video history. I have never heard of it looking any better than this. And quite frankly, to be honest, I don't think I want it to.

For the record, I used the Mainconcept encoder that came with Vegas. To complain about blockiness on a picture that, in most cases, can only be made sense of by listening to the audio and having a good memory of the events of the film, is just ridiculous. We are talking about making a pristine copy of a video that dances all over screen, has no resemblance to the original colors, and what colors there are are blooming way beyond NTSC standards! Anyone who thinks they are going to come up with an exceptionally better transfer with another encoder is not keeping in mind the reality of what a bad copy the tape is, and is really just looking for something to nitpick - or just trying to come up with a reason to get their hands on the tape.

Regardless, all we are talking about here is polishing a turd. You get what you got.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

there was a airing on british television in the eighties that actually had bits of the mono mix in it, does anyone have this? The quality might be a little better than the boot of the telecine.

The guy who posted sound clips on theforce.net, had a copy in pal betamax in his dad's collection.

"had a copy in pal betamax in his dad's collection."

Well, that's two strikes against getting a transfer of it.

It didn't "have bits of the mono mix in it", it was the mono mix. (However the video did not have the pre-ANH title crawl.) Anyway, see this thread for more details.

It is, if you can live with the PAL speedup.

It'd be interesting to see how the quality and integrity of his copy compares with my VHS.

This is really weird, in the TV broadcast they left the pitch shift, on the VHS tapes Moth3r used they corrected it, and on the DVD release they left it aswell... Does anyone know what they did with the other PAL releases?

That's no moon. It's a LaserDisc.

That's funny. I actually grabbed those years ago when he first put them up.

Anyone know how to get in contact with him?

Everyone knows that the picture quality of beta is better than VHS, I wonder if the sound is better also? Either way there's always the possibility that the sections missing from Moth3r's tape might be included here and/or it may have deteriorated less.

I just got this in the mail today and can pay-it-forward to a few people if anyone else needs it. Interesting set. The poor quality of the source actually is a bit appealing for me. It kinda reminds me of my long-time copy of Star Wars, which was a VHS copy off of a TV airing. When I get the stuff to actually make transfer to DVD, I'll have to find that copy and make it into a DVD.

Tell me, does anyone have a copy of the old '77 VHS they'd be willing to sell or trade for?

I have a 2nd gen copy of a UK airing of Star Wars on ITV from the 80s.

I copied it some years ago from my friends Betamax. I am sure he still has the betamax original out there somewhere. He is from a family of hoarders!

Wow, that would definitely be better than the copy I had transferred. Definitely get yours done, if not your friend's.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

I will get in touch with my friend in the new year. I have a tape to return to him containing all the Kenner Commercials that I've had for a rather long time. I had better return that to him first before I start asking for his Betamax of Star Wars.

I will keep you posted.
