Doctor Who — Page 57

So here’s an update on where I am with Who. I caught up to the series a while back. I have now seen every last existing episode from the very beginning to now.

Season 9 was a real mess. Clara should have departed with Eleven. Way, way, way too much focus was placed on her for far too long.

There were multiple instances where she would have had a perfect exit from the series but he kept bringing her back. Now there’s a diner floating out there in space for some stupid reason.

It’ll be so nice to finally have Moffat out of that chair. He lost his way a while ago. Just PLEASE don’t take Capaldi with him. Man is brilliant as the Doctor but his first two seasons have let him down. He deserves a chance to really shine.

Anyone know if the animated Power of the Daleks reconstruction will be released on DVD in region 1?

It’s playing fairly near here, but I won’t be able to go. I think BBC America is airing part one on Saturday, but that’s all I’ve heard about.

I went to see it last night, but the screening was scuttled for undisclosed technical reasons. I’m sure the Daleks are to blame!

Luckily my screening was free from any technical difficulties.

The story was solid. Patrick Troughton has always been my favorite Doctor since my first run through of the series.

I’m a little disappointed in the animation studios efforts here. You could tell they were working with a very small budget and during the little featurette after the show they mentioned how they were working under extreme time constraints to get it done by the deadline.

I wish they had brought back the studio that did The Tenth Planet. Their character designs were a little too anime-y but their layouts, use of lighting and animation was pretty great at times.

In contrast, the effort here for Power left a lot wanting. Their backgrounds and the Daleks were great though.

But it’s serviceable and the story can now be watched in at least some form now.

Just watched part one on BBC America, and it seems they will be airing it weekly, which is good news for multiple reasons. The animation was a bit awkward, but the designs were nice. I still can’t find any info on a region 1 release, so I guess there might not be one, at least for a while, which is horribly dissapointing.

O okay. I was hoping to get it by Christmas, but I guess another month won’t be so bad. Although, does that image say that it has a color animation? I would assume anyone who cares enough to buy it would only care to see it in black and white. I guess I might be wrong about that, but I myself probably wouldn’t watch a color version.

There will be a monochrome and a color version. I may just import the UK release since I have a region free player. Unlike movies, there are no PAL audio speedup issues with tv shows.

The Return of Doctor Mysterio

Well I was very pleasantly surprised. From the outside the premise sounded really stupid but they made it work. Loved the humor. It was a bit odd in that this didn’t really feel like a Christmas special but a regular episode of the series. Hopefully Moffat’s last season maintains this level of quality. If it does, he’ll go out on a high note.

Hm. I saw the trailers and dreaded watching the episode. I haven’t watched it, but my DVR is supposed to record all new episodes, so maybe I’ll watch tomorrow. Never watched last year’s special because it didn’t record, was it any good?

Last years was part wacky Christmas fluff and part really enjoyable character moments this year was wacky Christmas fluff (mostly ripped straight out of Superman the movie but at least it’s sort of explained in the story) made tolerable by Capaldi doing his usual best to make it work.

Last years is sort of essential viewing for the River Song story arc and the two flow directly into each other.

If what I read online is true and Hartnell broke the 4th wall to wish the audience a happy Christmas, then I really wish Dalek’s Master Plan would show up someday. It’s nigh impossible for hardly any lost episodes to ever be found though, yes?

Unfortunately, the episode where Hartnell wished us a happy Christmas was episode 7, “Feast of Steven”, the only 60s Who episode that wasn’t telecined, so the chances of its recovery are zero. Fortunately every other episode was, so there’s at least the possibility.

So I watched Doctor Mysterio last night after putting it off for a few days. I’m not quite sure how I feel about it. It’s definitely… something.

Watched The Power Of The Daleks animated reconstruction over the weekend, and really enjoyed it. There were some weird issues with the video quality though. Lots of jagged lines on just about everything, and the closing credits look like they’re oscillating. Going frame by frame, some of the text actually gets mangled or vanishes. A poorly done PAL to NTSC conversion? Kind of wishing I’d bought the UK release now. (And there’s no sign of a U.S. Blu Ray version on the horizon either.)

And the “color” version on the second DVD is actually just the B&W version colorized after the fact. The extras really should have been spread out across both discs, as cramming the telesnap recon and the behind the scenes stuff all on the B&W version is probably stretching things to the limit.

I like that all the bonus features are on the B&W disc, that way I never have to look at the disgusting colorized version.

I didn’t experience any of the problems you describe, though I’ve only watched part 1 on the disc so far.

Previous BBC Who releases tended to put lengthy extras on a second disc. (It’s also possible the animation and the telesnap version are easier to compress than a regular restored story, but that’s still nearly five hours in total.) I’m only watching the colorized version with the commentary switched on out of curiosity. The UK version doesn’t seem to have the second color disc at all.
Widescreen seems to go against the grain of recreating a 1960’s tv show, but they don’t have to blend in with any vintage material, unless an 16mm reel or two magically turns up in the near future. 😉

I’ve only seen two parts of it, and also noticed the jaggies. I just assumed it was a shoddy downscale from the HD footage, but a shoddy PAL conversion could also explain it.

Jaggies don’t seem to be an issue with the partially animated stories I’ve seen, but those are all PAL discs I’ve bought on Ebay.

Now that you mention it, I don’t remember it being this bad for the other partially animated stories I have, and those are NTSC.

The telesnap recon suffers from a shockingly low bitrate. (Probably the only way to cram it in on the same disc.) Nearly every fade out/fade in, or dissolve pixilates very badly.
