Yes and Clara is somehow morphing into Jo Grant!

btw Capaldi is supposed to have said the look is based the 'Thin White Duke' era Bowie costume...

No doubt Capaldi saw this ^ at last years extremely popular Bowie exhibition. I guess the Doctor Who costume department added the Pertwee red lined coat to complete the look. The exhibition ran at almost exactly the time Capaldi would have been told he'd got the gig and the same time he'd be looking round for inspiration.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Pertwee's costume was inspired by type of clothes Bowie wore.  If that is true it could be a case of two people getting inspiration from the same thing.  It is interesting that the 11Th Doctors costume seemed to be inspired by the second Doctor's and the 12th Doctor's seems to have been inspired by the 3rd's.

Still it is giving me a cool retro vibe and I can't wait to see the 12th Doctor in action.

I still say he needs some sort of a tie.

Yeah I know it's the modern style but button up shirts never look right to me without a tie.

My PBS station stopped airing it around the time the new series started airing on Sci-Fi. I think that deal tied up the rights to the classic series or something like that because I don't think anyone has aired the classic series in the US since the new series started airing on cable.

SciFi actually aired DW in their early days. Even though some Hartnell clips figured prominently in promos when they launched, they started with Tom Baker. (Running five days a week.) The commercial breaks were crude, and the episode recaps added were annoying. I don't think it lasted more than a year before they pulled it, although they did do Who themed weekends later on.

Bowie could have been the Doctor in an alternate universe. ;)

He needs this style of tie, only a bit thinner and a tad shorter.

Edit: And make the tie the same red as his coat liner.

Yeah that would work.  I really like that idea.

Well, I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned. It's the BBC's annual Doctor Who related cock up! http://www.hypable.com/2014/07/07/doctor-who-scripts-leak-online/

Yes, that's right. Someone's leaked the scripts for the first five episodes. The first episode is surprisingly good. That is all. (By that I mean, i will NOT be posting spoilers. You're gonna have to find it yourself if you want it. Torrent sites have them).

I've been slowly making my way through Doctor Who and have just recently gotten to the Fourth Doctor. I come before you now with a question.

How successful would you say The Doctor's mission was in Genesis of the Daleks?

My first thought after just finishing it was that it was a complete failure save for the fact that his interference saved Davros(I really shouldn't know about that yet, but I do).

But then I started thinking. When the Doctor was spilling the beans to Davros about all of the Daleks failures he says some interesting things. First he states that the Dalek invasion of Earth occurred in the year 2000. But we know it happened in the 22nd century. He also mentions attacks against Mars and Venus. Which we'd never heard of before now.

There's also the matter of the Daleks being much weaker when we first encounter them in The Daleks where they rely on static power and can only function on metal floors. Whereas at their birth they were fully mobile and capable of traversing war torn terrain.

Could it be that the Doctor was more successful than he realized? That his actions on Skaro altered time and that the show had been following this altered timeline up until now?

I had never thought of that but it is a good point.

We do know it had one big impact,RTD has confirmed that the Doctor's actions in Genesis triggered the Time War,as for an alternate time line it could be.  It would be an interesting subject for a Big Finish audio that is for sure.

To stave off the pre-new-Who buildup excitement, this weekend I shall be mostly watching a 'Black Guardian Trilogy' marathon (Got the Boxset out of the trusty local library). 5 whole hours of fun! (Not including the hours of bonus features!). Not watched these stories yet, I hope they are good.

The first one is good.  The second one is pretty bad. The third one is okay.

The special edition of Enlightenment is brilliant. It's tightly edited, the modern effects are sympathetic to the look of the sets and the aspect ratio gives the piece a completely modern look and feel.

And oh look the original version is restored and available in the same set.

Well, it was only a matter of time before she left,  no companion stays forever.

If true, good. Please lets have a companion who isn't an "interchangeable sassy twenty-something British girl". A little bit of variety please Mr Moffat. Even if it was just changing the companion to an "interchangeable sassy twenty-something American girl" it would be a start ;-)

btw I'm not saying Jenna isn't great in the role or anything. Just that it's a role we've got a triffle bored with.

Well The Black Guardian Trilogy was a bit boring IMO. A real struggle to get through at points. It was nice to see the Brig after his retirement... and before his un-retirement... and retirement again ;-) I'd remembered the 80s Davison era fondly from my younger days but after watching all this classic era stuff in recent months, I think it might be the show at it's weakest. However I got a kick out of seeing David "The original Legolas" Collings. There is something about those voices from the BBC Radio LOTR that I find captivating.

and the radiation-suits/armour from Terminus were badass. It reminded me of Dracula's armour from the Coppola movie mixed with the still suits from Lynch's Dune. I'm sure the Dune similarity (In design and function) is a coincidence as the movie started shooting a month after the serial was broadcast and they must have already designed/built the still suits by then.

So it was time for some more of Doctor Who at it's best. So I decided to cleanse my palette with a Jon Pertwee serial 'The Ambassadors of Death'.

It's mostly high-tension drama, exciting documentary style shooting and a fantastic plot twist that I never saw coming.

The downside is that 7 episodes it feels a little stretched. I'm sure all the crossing, double crossing, assassinations and kidnaps were just to hold the story off from progressiving for an episode or two. Still it was fun while it was going on and you're never sure who can be trusted.

Who is planning on seeing the new Doctor Who episode at the cinema on Saturday?

I don't know if I can be bothered despite the massive screen, the bonus videos and live interviews etc all sounding like fun. Although I did regret skipping the 50th Anniversary screening, paying 8 or 9 pounds to see something you are getting free with your TV Licence, just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me on one level.

I haven't read anything about the first episode, but I've not been impressed with a Doctor's first episode yet, so it seems like a gamble.

I stand corrected. Allow me to restate:

I've not seen a Doctor's first episode that I've been impressed with. As in, none of the 3 I've seen.

I thought the villain was a bit lightweight but The Eleventh Hour was the best incarnation primer I've seen all the way through, what we can see of Power of the Daleks works most impressively especially considering the weirdness of the concept being played out for the first time.

Here are some tastes of firsts gone by.
