Do you think George Lucas will correct the colors for the blu-ray release?

I don't think he will, because I think the color changes were deliberate and even if they were a mistake, George Lucas has too big of an ego to admit he made mistakes and own up to them. I know the '04 DVD was a rushed release, but come on, how shitty can you get? It's obvious at the last minuet, GL decided to have the set come out in '04 instead of '05. It made a lot of sense to have them come out in '04 instead of '05. That meant more ticket sales for ROTS. He compromised quality for $ and for the greatest movies ever made that is unacceptable. I doubt he'll even bother correcting any of the continuity errors for the blu-ray release.

There will be no Blu-ray release. Sorry.

Of course they will? How can they not? The most popular movie series of all time?

I was always wondering how Luke's lightsaber went from being blue to green in the '04 DVD?

Fucked-up color timing.  And in that shot it was never really blue, it was always off-white.

And yes there will be a Blu-Ray release, but I think it'll be identical to the 04 DVDs, just in HD.

Exactly what ChainsawAsh said. Now doubt there will be several releasings and rereleasings of all the SW movies on blue ray before all is said an done. But I am fully expecting the blue-ray releases to be exactly the same as the 04's. It is not like they have to remaster them in HD, they are already in HD as seen in the HD TV broadcasts. Sad, but no doubt true.

Also, I still feel very strongly that the OUT as a bonus ends with DVD. Too much work would be involved in remastering them in HD, and it would be giving us exactly what we want. Two things that seem to be taboo with LFL, working hard to achieve high quality products, and giving the fan exactly what they want.

I'm more interested in a theatrical 3D release of all the films.

Well apparently they are coming to Blu-Ray, but only the PT for now, with TPM slated for a 2010 release. GL is probably doing more tinkering to the OT movies before we see them on Blu-Ray but wil the colouring be any better? i highly doubt it. I can't see him spending any more cash than necessary on the OT for a HD release. they're already available in 1080p HD and to fix the problems he would have to rescan the negative, do the restoration work and colour correction all over again. Now this may happen if we see the OUT released with the Blu-Ray because it will show just how bad the colouring is on the 2004 transfer when watched alongside ( unless he adds the blue filter to the OUT to try and make out that this is the true colour and they didn't mess up in 2004)

Making Star Wars in 3D is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Does anybody besides kids even like anything in 3d? You got to wear those stupid glasses that give you a headache. Just give us the damn classic trilogy George!

I don't get a headache. And I want to see some of those space battle in 3D. Anyone with a sense of fun would want to.

Well, he did include the '04 version with the GOUT so the cat is already out of the bag on that issue.

The last 3D show I went to was the Terminator 3D thing in Universal Studios, and that was shortly after it first opened, and I didn't get a head ache from that. Don't know if this newer stuff is any different.

I think 3D in general in a pretty silly and gimmicky. However, silly and gimmicky can be kind of fun in small doses. If the movie looked normal without the glasses on so that you could take the glasses off when you got tired of them and enjoy the movie in 2D on the big screen, then I wouldn't hesitate to drop a ticket price on it. I would be worth it just to see the films on the big screen again. And it would be pretty cool to see the torture droids needle juting out of the screen at you, and to experience the space battles in 3D. Just imagine debris from that blown up X-Wing, or the wing of that Tie Fighter flying at your face. The kid in me gets thrills from the very thought of it.

EDIT: Oops, just remembered, I went on the ST Experience last year, and that has a small 3D segment. Man, that ride was freakin awesome! The nerd in me was much pleased throughout. I grinned like a dork the whole time. R.I.P. ST Experience.

First, I went to that Terminator 3D show years ago! Thanks for reminding me. I think I sat in the back, and unfortunately I can't remember more than that. :(

Second, if you take the 3D glasses off, doesn't it make everything blue and red?

Lucas also continues to lead the fight for film preservation. "It's amazing," he says, "that you have to fight the studios to get them to preserve their films. . . . Parts of 'Dr. Strangelove' are gone; some of the music is lost. Kubrick is having to photograph individual frames to create a new fine-grain negative. That's madness, tragic madness."

Depends on the showing.  Images don't have to be separate colors anymore for 3-D.

For the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back we get...Phantom menace?! What bizarro world am I stuck in?

Seriously, please George, just follow the Lord of the Rings and Star Trek example and put out the theatrical versions now so you can sell different versions down the line. I promise you'll make money!

What about the HD broadcasts i know they suffered from the same bad color timing.  But they did not have the compression issue i believe had a sharper picture with more film grain in evidence.

Do the crushed blacks still exist on the HD.  I figured it would be less a problem then on a DVD.  Unless the master handed off to Lowry was fucked to begin with.

From what i heard ILM did their own in house color correction prior to handing over the masters to Lowry.  These color timings supposedly were submitted for final approval to George Lucas and fit his exact instructions for the films.  Lowry just did the cleanup process and that is what they were hired for. They digitally removed dirt and restored broken frames on the movies.

I think it has not been revealed but Lucas had an undisclosed company make scans of the 1997 altered o-negs of the trilogy and only in 1080P.  This was most likely done before the age of 2k, 4k, or 6 k scanning.

They were either the negatives or the master created to print off the theatrical releases of the special editions.

These masters for the dvd were handed over to Lowry on hardrives stored in RGB format whatever that means. At least that is what i recall reading.

I also remember discussion from the X-0 Project on working in RGB colorspace.  Does anyone know what this is.  I googled RGB and apparently it is like the YCM of analog film but worked as data instead.

Will Lucas correct the colors for the blu-ray release? Well, if history is any indication, I'd say it's more likely that they'll be even more screwed up than the DVD release.

Also, don't be shocked if the Han / Greedo shootout gets altered yet again. This time, Greedo shoots first and misses, Han shoots second and misses, then they shoot virtually simultaneously, with Han hitting and Greedo missing.

Or, better yet, maybe they'll CG in Greedo suddenly having compassion on Han, getting up from the table, and walking away. See? He learned his lesson from the fistfight with lil' Ani in Episode I, and so he no longer needs to resort to Bullying. Isn't it fun to give peace a chance?

I wonder if they'll add even more useless shit into the ROTJ ending; plus, the OOT will be released in VHS quality (on Blu-Ray for god's sakes!)

He'll probably add some more force ghosts- George Burns, Dame Edna.....it'll look like the last shot in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. :-P
