There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for. "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people." http://www.myspace.com/harlock415
Yea seriously, vbangle. I actually thought this was the same thread as before.
Technically I own the whole thing except my copy of empire doesn't work. I got the '95 ANH fullscreen vhs for christmas that year and was a damn fool not to make sure I got the rest in due time. About a year and a half ago I stumbled upon used copies of the '95 empire and jedi tapes, both fullscreen, at a record and tape traders in rehoboth, delaware. ANH was not to be found. Perfect coincidence, right? Well, when I eventually play the tapes I discover that the copy of empire is totally shot. There's basically constant static and nothing I do is fixing it. Jedi played just fine though.
About a month prior to this, I found a used copy of the '86 Jedi fullscreen vhs (still in its cardboard box!) at my local potomac video's spring sale. I'm pretty sure it's the copy that they rented out for all those years, it still had the sticker on it from when another company owned the place. So logically this one should've looked and sounded like shit, right? After pressing play and getting past the static of the lead in tape, there was the cbs/fox logo and then it went straight into the movie. Beautiful.
So yea, I've got ANH, two copies of Jedi and a shot copy of Empire.
Originally posted by: iamstillhiro1112 I think it's a good question, cause I've seen some stating they refuse to pay for the OOT. I own them. I got the recent re-release on dvd.
Where? Show us the posts.
I know many people refused to buy what they deemed to be a sub-par release on DVD, but I've never seen anyone say they wouldn't buy the OT since they can get them here (in whatever form) for free.
I own it five times over, and I proudly don't own a single set of the 04 versions. All my versions are pre-Star Wars on DVD era.
I must second Cassidy's request for a quote on that one. I have never heard anyone say they refuse to pay for the OOT. Also you have to be careful to understand the person on that one. If anyone did say they refuse to buy the OOT, what they probably meant by that was that they refuse to buy it again. I too am sick of buying it, when they announced the DVD release I decided I should buy it for the last time, but then realized the DVDs where not the films I was looking for. Then the GOUT was announced and I again prepared myself to buy them, but I found out I already own the exact same thing (yes legally, not bootleg) in pretty much the same quality. At least all the other releasing I was suckered into buying had various differences, like the cool box set, then the THX Faces set, then the SE (which I thought would be a cool addition to the series, not a replacement). Every version I had bought had something different about it, the GOUT is exactly what I already have, why should I buy it again? If that is refusing to buy the OOT, then I am guilty.
Now, if sometime down the road the movies I have loved for so long are released to DVD or some other media in a quality half way reasonable for a commercial DVD release, then I imagine I will buy them one last time. But one last time is my limit, so I plan to choose my purchase wisely.
I bought the 2006 set in the Best Buy tin. I'm a bit miffed I paid $60 for it, but at the same time, that tin looks awfully attractive on my shelf so I really can't complain.
Otherwise, I own the '97 SE VHS tapes in pan and scan. Ugh. I'm afraid I was 8 or 9 at the time and unenlightened about aspect ratios. And then the 2004 DVD set in widescreen.
I have just about every release that LFL has put out of the OOT, starting with the original Video Rental Library clamshell VHS and Beta releases. All the VHS, all the Beta, all the CED's, all the LD's, the VCD's, box sets, singles, vintage docu's... you name it, it is most likely in my glass case. Though, I haven't slid that door open since displaying everything last year. And I haven't opened some of those things in YEARS! I really should run through the tapes to keep them from gumming. Not to mention checking the LD's for rot. But... yeah. I kinda made collecting the video releases my hobby when there wasn't anything else to collect.
