Do these animation films need preservation? — Page 2

@ KnightOfRound, I saw that thread, so I know about the old preservation.

There was an attempt to upload it to MySpleen, but it didn't work, so if you can upload it to a convenient filehost like Sendspace or Wetransfer, I'd be very happy to see it.

BTW, do you have the DVD files or a rip?

All the same, if the OP has a better source for preservation, for example, if the LD is of higher quality, I'd really like to see it, and TLK too.

Author

@ nirbateman: Which DVD files do you mean? From the LD preservation if I remember right I think this are the DVD files (VOB,BUP..) and not a rip.

I see what I can do, I was happy to see the movie in it`s original colors, so I don`t know whether the Disc has better quality as other resources.

@ KnightOfRound: Yes, that's what I mean. Thank you.

Wow, how many comments!

So, at the end, which are the most important titles to restore to start with?

The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast for their original unaltered version;

Fantasia primarily for its laserdisc PCM audio track;

Snow White, Pinocchio and Cinderella box sets for their original mono mixes on the analog tracks;

Cinderella for its original colors;

anything else?

About Roger Rabbit PAL: if I rembember well (because I watched it several years ago) this version is uncensored... but maybe I'm wrong; I have to check them, when I'll have time.

Cinderella and BatB seem good to me too, Andrea, and I would dearly love to see a transfer of the Deluxe CAV of Pinocchio.  I saw a comparison of the BD, DVD and LD on a forum (I forget which) and the LD looked by far the best. My LD of Cinderella looks like this.

Author
Time

I only *wish* I had that edition of Cinderella.  I have its CLV counterpart.

Aladdin's video... I couldn't detect anything, supposedly some of the CG was redone... the credits were redone, yeah, but that's minimal.  The sound... well, you'd have to combine stuff, since I'm pretty sure no home video release ever had "cut off your ear".

The "cut off your ear" line was only on the theatrical release and the soundtrack album.

There was also that line when Aladdin is trying to quiet Rajah down, the line people mistook as "take off your clothes". It was on the VHS and laserdisc, but it was altered in the Platinum DVD and I assume it's still altered on the Blu-ray?

Also, which issue of The Rescuers do you have, Andrea? The 1992 release or the 1999 one? There was that infamous nude centerfold in the apartment window, which only appeared on the initial pressings of the '99 version. It's more obscure than its VHS counterpart; according to someone on Home Theater Forum, the first Rescuers '99 LD pressing was recalled before street date. If the spine says "14793 AS", you have that version. If it says "17105 AS", you have the revised pressing.

IMO, the nude photo in The Rescuers isn't as high a priority as all this other stuff, I just thought I'd ask.

Apparently I'm in a niche group of people who prefer the original English dub of Akira to the redub (and I don't just mean on this forum). There was an official PAL release of it on DVD, but it's in fullscreen, it looks pretty crummy, and I could not get the audio to sync up to NTSC video at all.

I think the audio was in mono, too. I know someone had an AVI widescreen fan-edit of the original audio at Demonoid, I think it was in stereo, but the sound quality was really bad. Probably sourced from an old VHS.

I guess most people just watch it with the Japanese audio and English subs.

Yes, that's what my wife and I do.

However, I consider the original English dub to be one of the best.

"The Rescuers" catalog number is 1399 CS.

About Akira: do you think the laserdisc could be better than the DVD counterpart? If I'll decide to do a preservation, I'll include, apart english and japanese, also the italian soundtrack - also, for the Disney, I could use italian soundtrack from my friend's original VHS , if they are still playable...

Well if yours is in letterbox, and NTSC, and has the original English dub, then yes, it'll be better than the fullscreen PAL DVD.

_,,,^..^,,,_, you forgot to add the 1997 Bambi 55th Anniversary Laserdisc.

It includes the RKO Radio Pictures logo not seen on the DVD and Blu-ray.

If this is the only difference, I could capture only the RKO logo, and someone could insert it in a DVD/BD version. What do you think?

Maybe you could do it, Andrea. By the way, I think the laserdisc has the original mono mix in PCM and maybe a few other extras too but you should check and see.

I found a raw cap of Beauty and the Beast WIP... well, as raw as my DVD recorder makes :P

As I can't find anything else, I may up the caps as they are.

Today I was looking at my laserdisc collection, in particular at cartoons and animation; I wondered which of them may worth a preservation... like if there are no DVD or Blu-Ray editions; or, if present, there are alterations (like cuts, reanimations, wrong audio or aspect ratio) etc.

I'm quite sure some of Disney and Who Framed Roger Rabbit shorts have alterations.

I'm most interested in Disney and non-Disney feature lenght film - for some of them, I could think also to use my Pioneer HLD-X9!

Waiting for comments from users more expert than me.

Yes, they need preservation (especially the pre-Toy Story ones for the Disney's).

Good collection, although what's missing are (follow the links for additional informations) :

Bambi;

Alice in Wonderland;

Saludos Amigos/Three Caballeros;

other titles might follows...

By the way, if you are going to preserve theese, don't forget to preserve the bonuses, especially the Disney, as some are very rare or hard to come by since the never went to DVD or BR.

It might be interesting to preserve the laserdisc transfer of Toy Story as well, since it was the only version of any Pixar movie sourced from a film interpositive.

Starting with the video release of A Bug's Life, all Pixar home video masters came directly from the digital files, and for the DVD release of Toy Story they went back and did a direct-digital version too. The VHS and LD are the only time a film-sourced version was released. Not a high priority, just would be interesting.

Hmm... That might be worth the shot, indeed...

I don't pretend to be an expert on Disney films and AV quality of their releases (I just learned most of my stuff from the Vaultbreaker thread and DVDIzzy in recent days), but, here are my recommendations. (reasons underneath why)

_,,,^..^,,,_ said:

  • 3 - Beauty And The Beast - Work In Progress (Letterbox - DS)

Has original "Be Our Guest" with Belle's father-- different than DVD.

  • 4 - Beauty And The Beast (Letterbox - DS)

OAR, original colors, OTV, and no IMAX clean ups.

  • 5 - Cinderella (Box Set) (Letterbox - DS)

Bought this a long time ago. Looked at it now. It's got gorgeous picture and audio for a laserdisc. The DVD/BD Lowry restoration was the most botched out of the ones for the Classic Disney films; also, original RKO card!

  • 6 - Fantasia (Full Screen - DS)
  • 6b - Fantasia Box Set

Original narration by Mr. Deems Taylor.

  • 10 - Lion King (Letterbox - AC3)
  • 10b - Lion King Box Set (AC3)

OTV. No reanimation of crocodiles.

"67 - Superman Cartoons Of Max & Dave Fleischer, The (Full Screen - Mono)"

How's the picture quality? Does it have same oversaturation issue as the DVD releases?

Author

That's a tough question considering those shorts are in the public domain and there are numerous releases of it with varying quality. I understand the "official" WB release is actually on the low end, but I forget which on DVD is best.

I did a re-edit of the Superman shorts a few years ago, using the warner dvd for the image and the old Bosco/Image Entertainment DVD for the sound. Maybe I'll rework them and then upload them for our group. But I have absolutely no idea about the laserdisc.

I think it'll be safer to upload the full LD so everyone here will be able to compare.

How's the picture quality? Does it have same oversaturation issue as the DVD releases?

Joral, do you have any informations about the original technical specifications of those shorts ?
