Do these animation films need preservation?

Today I was looking at my laserdisc collection, in particular at cartoons and animation; I wondered which of them may worth a preservation... like if there are no DVD or Blu-Ray editions; or, if present, there are alterations (like cuts, reanimations, wrong audio or aspect ratio) etc.

I'm quite sure some of Disney and Who Framed Roger Rabbit shorts have alterations.

I'm most interested in Disney and non-Disney feature lenght film - for some of them, I could think also to use my Pioneer HLD-X9!

Are most (or any) of these PAL LDs?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

37b - Nightmare Before Christmas, The (Letterbox - DTS)

My daughter would LOVE this .... as would I.

I saw the Spawn animated series discs you've got listed.  I know I have the first pressing release of the DVD set of them.  I wonder what the difference, if any, there would be.

:)

@Anthony: they are (almost all) NTSC laserdiscs.

The only PAL ones are Rox et Rouky (The Fox and The Hound) - french language, never released in US as laserdisc - and Who Framed Roger Rabbit - english, which contains three short cartoons that, AFAIK, were not available anywere in laserdisc format.

@Jetrell: my daughter too loves "Nightmare Before Christmas", but the italian version - which was dubbed by Renato Zero, an italian singer who I usually hate, but I liked him very much in this movie!

4 - Beauty And The Beast (Letterbox - DS)

would came best (as "double feature") with

3 - Beauty And The Beast - Work In Progress (Letterbox - DS)

I know they are both on DVD and BD; what are the difference between them and the laserdisc version?

Primarily, the colors.

The BD release is closer, but not perfect from what I hear. Also, the DVD is atrocious and has extra scenes.

The Jetsons Movie and We're Back have both had a DVD release in widescreen.

Spielberg's "Family Dog"series has not come out on DVD, although the pilot episode was originally an Amazing Stories installment.

Heavy Metal has long been on DVD and the Blu Ray is terrific. There are some very minor differences in the soundmix, but it's unlikely a stereo soundtrack recorded off cable prior to the official 1990's video release exists. The Japanese Laserdisc is open matte.

Beavis and Butthead Do America has also had a nice DVD release.

Cat's Don't Dance has only come out on DVD in full frame.

There are a couple other anime or family films I could add to the list soon as I'm done sorting out my LD collection.

Cats Don't Dance did get a widescreen DVD in several European countries (e.g., Germany and Spain).

The Lion King had some animation redone for the IMAX release, and it's carried over to all of the DVD and Blu-ray releases. That'd be a good one to preserve.

Roger Rabbit had a couple digital alterations on DVD. When Baby Herman walks under the script girl's skirt, you used to see him sticking up his middle finger between her legs. Also, when Jessica gets thrown out of the cab, you could see up her skirt and it looked as if she wasn't wearing underwear. The uncensored version deserves a good preservation. Also, the short "Trail Mix-Up" had a "Rigid Tools" pinup in the sawmill that got blurred out on DVD. Here's what it originally looked like:

Is The Little Mermaid the original release or the 1997 one? I know Doctor M did a version which used the Platinum DVD but restored the priest's knee, but I don't know if anybody has done preservations of either of the LDs in their entirety.

Fantasia was remixed for DVD, and IMO it sounds inferior to the laser. That LD needs a preservation with uncompressed PCM sound.

The Snow White, Pinocchio and Cinderella box sets had the original mono mixes on the analog track, I think it would be nice to have preservations of those with the mono sound.

Primarily, the colors.

I believe there's different WIP versions available. I'm not sure if the one on the BD is the same as the one that was released on LD. And, to top it off, on the BD the work-in-progress version is downgraded from an alternate angle to a picture-in-picture feature! I think the DVD that comes with the big set still contains it as an alternate angle feature but that's still a huge disappointment.

Also, it's more than the colors. The LD is the only OAR release of B&TB, the rest are cropped to some degree.

Also why would #5 be letterboxed? Cinderella is in 4:3 is it not? That could also use a transfer if only for color reference. While Disney seems to have gotten better about this, that particular movie has a HUGELY anachronistic color pallet and it's painful to look at. Despite the fact that it's new to BR I think they used their DVD master done by Lowry years ago and it shows. Missing detail ahoy!

I look forward to any work you put out, regardless of if you choose to clean it up!

I agree, the Beauty And The Beast LD should be preserved, the theatrical cut had amazing colors which were obliterated in the "IMAX enhanced" version.

I got both the CLVs of Cinderella, and did release an iso some time ago, but a raw rip of the CAV edition would be nice, I could better fix my blunders on that.

Also an X9 rip of Lion King and BatB - I do have these in CAV, including the BatB workprint - would probably step all over what my equipment is capable of.

There was a good post showing some issues with Pinocchio somewhere as well but I can't find it. Yeah, it's a shame - especially when we know they CAN and HAVE done right in the past. Fantasia? That looks amazing. If Robert Harris is a fan, then so am I (under most circumstances at least.)

I dunno, I thought Fantasia had a kind of flat low-contrast look too. (Though IMO the bigger problem is the dull, denoised sound mix, but I already said that.)

The added scenes are gone. That much I know. On the DVD set, the theatrical cut accidentally maintained the slight animation changes that were made in order to stay consistent with the events of "Human Again," such as cleaning up the castle in certain places (for example a once-shattered mirror is replaced with a whole one.) I believe the BR fixes all of them but I'm not certain.

I think the UK PAL laserdisc is the censored version - the uncensored version was on an earlier US NTSC release. Interestingly, when it was broadcast on UK TV it was uncensored.

There is also a preservation of the LD version of Beauty and the Beast, perhaps from one of this forum I don`t know anymore in case of one is interested in this I can manage to upload it or so...I was glad to see this in its original colors. I was so angry about the changes in the first DVD version so I remeber one rug in the castle is deep red and on the DVD was like rosy or even pink! Sorry but that is too much for me.

So goes on with The Lion King, its hard to believe they changed its colors from nature earthy complexion to a "i look now like a brand new TV animated movie". For the first DVD version some scenes have been changed like the crocodiles in Just can`t wait to be king and the waterfall scene with adult Simba and Nala. Furthermore the cloud in heaven which Simba runs afterward after his dead father appeard have been erased for the new 3D presentation in cinemas an so for the BluRay release. The sound is also remixed and not so powerful as on the laserdisc versions.

It would be great to see this as a preservation!

@ KnightOfRound Even worse, check out the scene where Belle kicks Gaston out of her house and he falls in the mud.

In the first DVD, the colors of the mud and Gaston's face are the same, looks like a Z grade Saturday morning cartoon.

And I fully agree about The Lion King, although the new Bluray removes that awful song, The Morning Report, I still keep my VHS tapes of many Disney classics, albeit dubbed in Hebrew.

Another classic that was tampered with was Aladdin, but only in the soundtrack, that DVD looks great.

If I could have the LD preservations, I would be ecstatic!

Oh my god, I have seen the DVD of BatB only once or twice, have in shock not registered this mud-scene ;-)

I am not sure but was there a few changes in Aladdin besides the audio track?

Yes the old VHS cassettes are stored away, unfortunately there are all in full screen.

@nirbateman: So in case of interest, if you like I look for the preservation of BatB.

Author
Time

@ KnightOfRound, Oh yes, that would be great, my tapes are also in FS, but unbelievably well preserved compared to the amount of playing I've put them through as a child.

The VHS tapes of BATB and TLK are better looking then their first DVD counterparts, but compared the bluray, the picture is a bit faded.

I think PAL tapes fared better then NTSC.

I'd still love to see a preservation of TLK as well, my first visit to a cinema.

P.S, knowing Aladdin well, I don't know of any alterations to the animation on the DVD, but the change of "Arabian nights" which crept into the dub I know so well *really* ticked me off, not only because it was done as badly as it was on the original English track, but because the VHS had the original line, and no one thought anything of it back then, meaning that the change to the DVD must have been ordered by Disney. Damn those PC bastards!

Author
Time

@ nirbateman: Ahh right, I remember the Aladdin case..sad but true what makes the Disney Company with its old masterpieces :-( money makes first and the most of the people don`t know and care about it.

Good, I look for the BatB version and give you a PM then. I think its the file you searching for in the Vaultbreaker thread.
