Well, it happens to me, too... usually, once or twice during a whole movie, so this was an unfortunate event... (^^,)

Tomorrow morning encoding will be finished; I'll mux it, watch it (with two toothpicks that will take my eyes wide shut during the whole film) with my wife (who will be applied the same technique, even against her will) to be sure no frame is bad encoded, and finally I hope to re-release it tomorrow afternoon...  wish me luck, I'll need it (in particular with the toothpicks affaire)!

Chewtobacca, it is right the image I had into my mind since my youth!!!

I caught the allusion.  It seems that we misspent our youths in a similar fashion.

Agreed... but I think I'm cursed, are you too?

I watched them all with my wife - our eyes hurts, by the way (^^,) and I discovered another badly encoded frame just five minutes before the end... it's a curse, or simply some software has problems...

So, I will re-do the encode a third (and I hope for the last) time - but this time I'll switch off EVERY other software, and avoid to open ANY video file; I'm going to download the last version of both AviSynth and x264... maybe the browser will be the only software I'll leave opened, because AFAIR I had no problems with previous project encoding leaving it opened... and, if I will forced to do a 4th encoding, I'll do it using a completely clean and with fresh OS reinstall.

Wish me luck again!

Good!  Stick to the 32-bit versions.  Render a lossless AVI, check it for errors, and encode from that.  And check your RAM with Memtest.

Can't you just use tsmuxer to split the film just before that error so you only need to reencode the last 5 minutes, then join the two encodes to have the whole film fixed without needing to reencode the whole thing again?

I doubt you can split a film with frame precision in TSmuxer.

You can't split with single frame precision with TSmuxer but in this case I don't believe you need to. I don't know about Andrea's workflow but in his place I would split the film as close as I could to the flaw and start encoding from the next frame after the first part of the split ends to the end of the film, then use tsmuxer to join the first part of the split to the new corrected encode of the last five minutes, saving myself having to reencode the whole film in the process.

I thought to use TSmuxer to do that, but don't know if cutting files without knowing which kind of frame is the first and last of each piece, the result will be compression-artifact free... probably yes, but as I still I need to know is WHAT is making it wrong, and because I tomorrow I will work, sleep, and few things more, I'll be not enough concentrated to work onto other projects, so let's work this ol'PC of mine! (^^,)

I have a lossless "digital intermediate", and it's perfect, so I suspect the problem was arisen when I tried to open a file encoded with lagarith, the same codec used in the "DI"...

So, to whom it may concern, if you need to make a perfect x264 encoding, this is what I have learned so far:

  • use a lossless "digital intermediate" whenever possible, it will spare you a lot of encoding time (up to 30/40% in my case) - sometime, it's the only way to avoid problems
  • if you make a two pass encoding (strongly suggested), leave the .stats and .stats.mbtree files alone, until you are 110% sure the final encode is right; it will spare time if you will be forced to re-encode, as you could do only the second pass
  • never open a video file that uses the same codec of the "digital intermediate" - if possible, try to avoid to open ANY audio/video file
  • if you encode using an avisynth script, do not use any software that will use an avisynth script - like virtualdub, but also VLC, MPC etc.
  • if you need your final file is BD compliant, be sure to use all the right settings

"That's all, folks!" Hope this will help someone!

Isn't there any way to check if there are corrupted frames, without having to see the film every time? :-(

I've taken to using FFVHUFF as my intermediate format.

"Right now the coffees are doing their final work." (Airi, Masked Rider Den-o episode 1)

Molly, I use Lagarith since two years ago and, apart the fact that VLC doesn't like to play files encoded with it - while MPC has not problem - I'm quite happy with it; FFVHUFF should be almost the same, but, because I'm an old dinosaur, I stick with things that works until they don't work anymore... "if ain't broken, don't fix it!"

But I must admit I'm curious to test this new losslees coded, to see if it's faster and less CPU demanding than lagarith: http://magicyuv.com

Sorry for the delay, but again, it seems a cursed release... (-^,)

The first time I watched it after the re-encoding, I listened to the english PCM track; the second time, I listened to the italian track, and I discovered that it was out of sync... so, I was forced to fix it, and it took quite some time, as the sync problems was scattered around the whole movie... now the italian track is nearly perfect but, as I'd like to NOT waste more time, I left it "as is" and now...

Disney's Beauty and the Beast [spoRv]

BD-25 RELEASED!

you could find it in the usual myinternalorganwhichyoucanlivewithoutbutyoustillprefertohaveitnevertheless.org

- this time is NOT a false alarm... (^^,)

Enjoy!

P.S. To be perfect, it still needs these things:

  • Italian subs (feature and commentary) from BD (instead of DVD) to be graphically identical to the other languages
  • German subs (commentary) from BD, because it's missing

If someone could provide them, I'll be very happy!

Thanks, Andrea.  I've been looking forward to this more than any other project.

I've been wanting to tell you something but I always forget. The "plant a tree" thing is a bit wrong. The tree has always been there, but Disney/Lowry/whoever did the restoration put it a few frames earlier than it should be.

I noticed it after I posted the screenshots, but I always forgot to mention it, too! Why the did it is unexplicable, though... still, few of the "rays" from the hand of the ex-beast at the end, during the transformation, are missing in the BD... again, why?!? Mysteries of the animation restorations... at least, done by major studios and not by us, mere mortals who spend our lives doing fan restorations to restore their errors... (^^,)

I wonder if mistakes like the tree and such, occur because they created a 3D version of this film. Therefore they are cutting up scenes, and then misplace certain parts and sometimes forget certain things, like the clouds in The Lion King.

Hello Andrea.

I'd like to ask a favor if that's possible.

Could you grab the same screenshot with this below (which is from your Bluray) from the original unfiltered file you captured from the Laserdisc?

I' like to compare the two, to see something..

Ok, thank you very much!!

yes, it's just as I've thought.

The backgrounds in the original are blurry, as the film is supposed to be, so as to add depth to the film.

Unfortunately with the filter this effect is lost. The background  becomes flat and not blurry. (although the characters seem indeed much much better!)

But, I'm not criticizing your procedure, this is the best it could look when you apply filters. You did a great job with it as I see from previewing the incomplete downloaded file!

The thing i'd like to do for my own viewing pleasure, since I love grain, would be to add grain and simulate a 35mm film reel watching experience.

I have a great virtualdub filter (with extension *.vdf) that I use in my video editing software (MAgix MovieEdit), but i'm not sure how to use on the complete film, since this would involve re-encoding and i don't want to lose quality.

I thought of applying an add grain effect on the fly, watching the Bluray with et. MPC, but I don't know what to use.

I'm sorry again if I ask too much (as I've said BATB is my favourite animation film of all time), but would it be a possibility in the near future to upload the raw rip of the Laserdisc too as you captured it?

We have Molly's preservation of course, but yours (from a quick comparison I did) is much better, and it would be great to have this too for archival purposes..
