If a bodybuilder turned actor can play Vader, I don't see why Mr. Johnson can't play some sort of creature or masked role? I thought he was pretty good in Scorpion King...

But Prowse was just the physicality of Vader he did not play Vader that was James Earl Jones.

Or we Would have a very jarring bad voiced villain with a hard welsh accent.

He's from Bristol in England, do they have bad accents?

I know the cast jokingly called him "Darth Farmer", but he still had to say the lines to give the actors something to play of off. The physicality is just as important to a character as dialog, as Peter Mayhew always proved.

I don't recall anybody around here being happy about Hayden in the Vader suit back in 2005. ;)

I don't see a problem with the Rock..... assuming he's some sort of villain type character he could actually work quite well... either some sort of alien or a bounty hunter in a lesser roll... why not?  Wouldn't be any worse than Sam Jackson....

The Rock could be a formidable Sith Lord.

Darth Roody Poo Jabronius.

Saw Disney head honcho Bob Iger on some financial news show while flipping channels today. He discussed Star Wars briefly, but made it sound like no casting decisions had been made yet. Either he didn't get the memo about George spilling the beans, or they're not officially acknowledging it. ;)

I hope George keeps straying off Disney's PR script...

He always does. The Lucasfilm marketing department always get a kick out of keeping things hush hush but whenever George makes appearances he always spills and then says, "Oh yeah they probably didn't want me to talk about that..." I've always liked that about him. =P

Me too.  George Lucas always spilling the beans is pretty funny.

I like him in this new capacity!

Emperor Jar-Jar
“Back when we made Star Wars, we just couldn’t make Palpatine as evil as we intended. Now, thanks to the miracles of technology, it is finally possible. Finally, I’ve created the movies that I originally imagined.” -George Lucas on the 2007 Extra Extra Special HD-DVD Edition

I've heard elsewhere the officially posted "Star Wars Detours" clips have been taken down from Youtube. (Don't have time to check right now.) Is my prophecy about this becoming the next Holiday Special coming to pass?

I'd bet Disney wishes they could make the Family Guy parodies vanish. ;)

David has a West Country accent.

It's not Welsh or Scottish or even Brummie.

And he did the physical acting.

He is as much a part of Vader as James Earl Jones, Bob Anderson or Seb Shaw.

Exactly Bingo, Dave seems to get a lot of slagging for his role.

David Prowse was the actor who was Darth Vader, the power of his stride & screen presence in Star Wars & Empire Strikes Back were essential in creating the character, the VO of James Earl Jones and the mechanical breathing were the finishing touches to make Darth Vader the top Screen Villian.

JEJ didn't think his VO deserved a mention in the end credits of SW

Well no matter how you spin it, JEJ voice acting is incomparably more important to Vader's portrayal than Prowse's physical acting. You could easily replace Prowse with some other random guy while JEJ was irreplaceable.

I don't agree.  While I agree that JEJ probably was slightly more important to the nature of the character, I think it took more than just Prowse's physique to create the Vader character.  I think he really had an intimidating presence, and the way he carried himself was truly imposing.  Even subtle body language is important, and I think Prowse delivered.

Agreed. I'm not saying that some people wouldn't notice the difference but, in general, you could get way with a different large man in the suit.

Just, you know, not Hayden.

They tried shooting on Empire with Peter Mayhew's stand in when he was completely exhausted from long days with Threepio on his back. It became obvious how much Mayhew's mannerisms are part of Chewbacca, and they could only do long shots or keep Chewie's back to the camera until his return.

The Clone Wars animators actually had Peter come in so they could get Chewie's moves right for the show.

Even Creepy Puppet Yoda has a leg up on his digital counterpart, because that's still Frank Oz hiding under the floorboards.

When Hasbro had live action footage shot for a Star Wars video boardgame, they got Prowse for Vader.

I saw Harrison Ford on CNN about a split second before they went to commercial. Has he confirmed he's aboard for Episode 7?

If I was one of the "original gang", I'd be having all sorts of fun misleading the press. Be spotted having lunch with Billy Dee. Have a fake feud with George. "Leak" a fake costume fitting photo on my twitter...etc...

Is there any chance we can get Sean Connery to play Han's father?

I don't think there's enough money on the planet to lure Sean out of retirement these days. Maybe they can get Neil? ;)

They could hire Darrell Hammond to play Connery playing Han's father instead. :P

http://www.cosmicbooknews.com/content/exclusive-star-wars-episode-vii-takes-place-30-years-after-disciple-palpatine-plot-info

Star Wars Episode VII will be set 30 years after Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

• It will indeed feature the Skywalker/Solo children coming to the peak of their powers

• The Jedi Order has been rebuilt with Luke Skywalker as Grand Master

• A disciple of Emperor Palpatine aims to rebuild the Sith Armies of the Old Republic and destroy the Jedi where the Skywalker children  will be thrust into battle and face their inner demons of their Skywalker lineage.

Nothing there surprises me, as it was obvious that's where the story is going. The key will be making the new villain(s) fresh and original rather than a tired rehash of previous ones.
