Why? So you can all jump up and down on me for not towing the party line? No, thanks. I'll reserve my right to silence and you'll just have to respect that. "Do explain" indeed.
Oh hai, 2/4.
I'll be damned, Kasdan back into Star Wars again. Interesting, I never thought I would see the day. I know that I'm not alone to f***ing love that guy for the simple reason that he penned two of the best adventure films of all time - Raiders and ESB. But he was a hungry 30 year old screenwriter back then just as Lucas was a young hungry filmmaker back then.
With the risk of being a killjoy as I know people are excited by these news... you simply don't get the kind of movie magic you got with the first two SW-films by just bringing back the old guys. Back in the early 90's, did anyone think Lucas was a bad choice to write and direct Episode 1? Back in '79 was Kersh the name on everyone's lips on who they wanted to direct Star Wars II? Lightning in a bottle don't happen by design. And the words on bringing back the old cast... well, I get Indy 4 vibes all over again. Sorry if I sound so damn pessimistic about it but I honestly feel this is 20 years too late.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

PM me, then. I won't "jump down your throat", it's not a big deal to me whether you like him or not, I'm just curious as to what your reasoning is.

Agreed. Although "Lawrence Kasdan to write new Star Wars film" is undeniably a far better headline than "George Lucas to write new Star Wars film," you'll understand if I withhold optimism until well after the new movies have hit the theaters. We've been burned too much in the past; fool me once shame on you, fool me twice...

Every 27th customer will get a ball-peen hammer, free!
This is most certainly not bad news.
Honestly, I completely understand the skepticism, but, when you think about it, this is, in fact, good news. Sure these films aren't guaranteed to be good, but this is definitely a step in the right direction.
The optimism I've had since the announcement is now starting to turn into anticipation.

Just curious, that's all. Most SW fans respect Gary Kurtz, so it's rare to hear someone doesn't want him to be involved.
Maybe don't assume people will attack you for having a different opinion. And don't victimize yourself before that has happened.

I don't know where you get off in saying that I'm victimising myself, georgec. Am I to take this condecension as further provocation? God knows enough of you are trying.
No, you're quite alright. I can more than hold my own against any of you - I've seen enough of your posts to know that - but I doubt many of you would be able to respond to my bucking the trend here in a civil fashion - this is an internet forum after all - so in the interest of keeping the peace I have chosen not to argue about the subject.
It's quite sad to see the collective responses to my decision not to be drawn on the issue. Quite pathetic, really.
Thanks for the link, nightstalkerpoet. Kasdan certainly speaks for me on this issue but I don't think he has any more authority than the so-called purists when they claim to speak for "most" of the fans (even though I'm sure he's probably right).

not sure why the attitude here. This is a friendly board, and I haven't seen any "provocation" here except from you.

Easter, I really don't think it helps the flow of discussion if you're not willing to actually discuss - making a comment, but not following up, tends to draw out the purist in many of us, believing you don't have adequate supporting evidence. While this is "originaltrilogy.com", people here are actually quite open to discussing things civilly, despite having opposing viewpoints. I'd suggest you put yourself out there... I mean, consider this:
I've made these points about myself very clear:
Those may be quite different from many around here... but without conflicting viewpoints, this forum for discussion becomes sorely lacking in discussion. I've found in the past few years that the internet as a whole has come to this realization - too many forums and sites collapsed and died, taking with them the few trolls that sat around and did nothing but agree with each other.
Just something to consider.

- I love the light saber battle with Yoda from AotC.
- Under the crap, AotC is my favorite SW film.
- I'm working on a serious edit of TPM with Jar Jar as the main character.
- I believe Yoda could be replaced by cgi in the OT effectively.
- I believe editors doing SAGA edits should mold the PT to the OT, but also the OT to the PT.
- I think the original Krayt Dragon Call blends in too much with the score.
- I don't really care if Han shoots first or not.
- I'm rather fond of Ewoks.
Burn him. ;)

I know there's a lot of pre Turkeypocalypse tension in the air, but can everyone take a deep breath, calm down, and be nice to each other, in the spirit of the season? Thanks!
Where were you in '77?
I was never one to complain about the Ewoks either since there was plenty of edgy stuff to counterbalance it in ROTJ(Which btw I am indifferent about with the reputation it has among fans).
Have they said when there would be more details about who they are narrowing it down to to fill the other major roles in crafting Episode VII?

Where do you live exactly? I need to know where to steer my death star. :)
Use the force, Brooks. And find me, you will :D
As for more details, not yet. However, if they're trying to secure writers for films 8 and 9, they are probably looking at this as the whole trilogy rather than just Episode 7. Hopefully this means they are looking for a long term crew, and possibly means they are considering LOTR style continuous filming.

I'm just happy that they're putting thought into the scripts this far in advance. It's nice that the story is being given so much attention by the studio.
For some reason I'd love the new trilogy to have the title "Wars of the Stars".

Was it true Kasdan contributed the only memorable dialog between Indy and Marion in KOTCS?
I dunno, I can't remember...
;)
Marion Ravenwood: [Indy cuts Marion loose, and removes gag] I'm sure I wasn't the only person to go on with my life. There must have been plenty of women for you over the years.
Indiana Jones: Yeah. There were a few, but they all had the same problem.
Marion Ravenwood: Yeah? What's that?
Indiana Jones: [Indy cuts through roof] They weren't you, honey.
Haha, just watched KOTCS again for the first time since the first painful time I watched it. This time equipped with riff trax (yay!). Anyway, when that exchange graced the screen I couldn't help but roll my eyes. It was pretty terrible. Even with some fairly entertaining riffs playing over the audio, the whole thing was still hard to stomach.
When you say memorable, do you mean in a good way? Because I don't see it. That line was extremely cheesy. As a whole that movie actually turned out to be way worse than I remember it. There are a few KOTCS apologists around these parts, including Anchorhead, whose movie taste I usually agree with, so I think that made me give the movie the benefit of the doubt after having not seen it in all these years.
Almost makes me want to encourage Anchor to give the prequels a shot. All the things that made me hate KOTCS are the same things that made me hate the prequels. Makes me think if he gave them a shot, he might be far more forgiving than the majority of us.
